My adventures in southern Brazil continued in the wine-producing region roughly an hour and twenty minutes north of the city. Join me as I have the ultimate Brazilian wine country experience in Vale dos Vinhedos, Brazil!

My day began at the Intercity Cidade Baixa in Porto Alegre, but my friends Guilherme and Rafa from Rio4Fun and Rio4Food and I would soon be making the drive north to Vale dos Vinhedos.
On the 19th floor of the hotel, they have the breakfast area, including coffee, fruit salad, orange juice, yogurt, sandwiches, and more.
The landscapes on the way to Vale dos Vinhedos are lush and green and the towns are very colonial. It felt like I was in Tuscany or Switzerland as we approached Garibaldi. The temperature is cooler because it’s in a valley. Garibaldi was founded in 1900 by roughly 1,000 Italian immigrants. It’s now the sparkling wine capital of Brazil!
The town reminded me of the small towns you find in Napa Valley. We stopped at the train station, which is the main tourist attraction in the town. There were lots of flowers there and some kids playing soccer near the abandoned tracks!
Then, we drove to a bakery called Cantinho das Delicias in the center of town. It’s like a traditional diner with tables and booths. They sell cakes, coffee, and more. I got a double espresso and some pao de queijo, which was hot and full of cheese. There are lots of Italian influences in the food, including the pastries, pizza, and the dark coffee.
Next, we headed to Peterlongo Winery, which produces the very first Brazilian champagne. They have a license to be able to call it champagne. It’s huge and has high ceilings and produces tons of different wines. They have public and private tastings that last an hour.
We tried the first champagne ever produced in Brazil, which was fruity and bubbly and ages in barrels for 36 months. Next was one that ages in barrels for 18 months. It was dry, younger, and fruitier!
Next was a 6-month-old 2018 chardonnay, which was amazing. I liked it better than the other two. It was dry and sweet! Next was the a Portugese grape wine aged in French barrels, which was full-bodied, fruity, and oaky. These are their four best wines!
Next was a delicious pink Moscato with merlot, followed by a pure Moscato. I love sweet wines! I bought three bottles of their wine to take home with me and they gave me a glass as a gift!
Next, we drove to Vinicola Cainelli, a small family winery in Bento Gonçalves. First we saw their cellar, where they have barrels and fermenting tanks. It has been in business for five generations!
I got to see where they bottle their wines, which include red, white, rose, and more. Then, the owner took us into the vineyard on a tractor.
It’s beautiful! These vineyards with the grapes overhead are for producing grape juice, while the columns are for wine. I tried a couple grapes but they were still sour!
They also grow oranges, limes, and other fruits. Then, we visited the wine-tasting room. It’s in a house built in 1929. The winery was started by his grandfather.
I tried some Marselan from Marseilles, France, which was bold and heavy and not sweet. It’s made with cabernet sauvignon and a Spanish grape. Next was a sparkling, Prosecco-like wine. It was very high quality.
Next was a cabernet sauvignon, and then he gave me some grappa to try! You put it in your coffee in the winter. It’s 40% alcohol!
This really was the ultimate Brazilian wine country experience in Vale dos Vinhedos, Brazil!

Fun fact: the Italian dialect spoken in this region is called Talian and it has been studied by Italian linguists because in Italy it has disappeared, or almost.

So... my grandparents spent 30 years or so in Brazil.... my grandfather working for union carbide..... awesome life they lived,,, I own a civil war era gun gifted to my grandfather from the old president of Brazil from the late 70s and 80s.... just awesome... I have a picture, of my grandma holding me up in the panoramic windows of the top floor to the tallest hotel in rio in the year 1975.... holding me up... the statue in the background..... only a few hotels back then that high in rio.... view of statue.... in back and beach in front..... they lived on the whole top floor of this hotel for many years..... they were blessed and gifted with a helper named marlee` I was told when I was young that she was my aunt.... I said marlee? When I was 13? She said we lied to you I worked for your grandmother and grandfather...... I said I dont care... I loved you the same.... the culture, the people, the best of what is left in this world,,,, so proud to have some of this heritage in my life.... marlee broke my heart,,, I really thought she was my aunt....her and my grandma held my hands on each side while they walked around the fresh markets,,, I remember the hanging and iced fish.... beautiful..... the uneven floors, because a Child is always looking down..... but the huge hanging and iced fish is what I remember most shopping with granny and marlee.... love you both always... love you grandma. Love you marlee.... thank you and love you for treating me like your own.....

In Brazil it is customary to call uncle (s) any adult who takes care of a child (such as a teacher, nanny, etc.), to create a familiarity. So, it's not that she lied.

here in brazil we call everyone that is older than you and you (and the person) feels safe with by aunt or uncle, like friends of your parents or the teachers in the school, it creats familiarity and some good memorys for us

The information on snow is incorrect, as snow always falls in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, and sometimes in Paraná there is also snow in some cities further south of the state.

Snows every year in the mountains at the south of Brazil and it's definetely not hail.
Each state in Brazil is like a different country, people look different, different back ground, culture, specially from North to South
The blue flowers are called “Hortênsia” and they tend to change their colors (from blue to pink) depending on how acid is the soil. More blue or purple, more acid, more pink or white, more basic. It was a way of knowing if the land was good for wine plantations in the old times, now it’s a simbol of the region, and it looks pretty.

We actually do have snow in Brazil in some of the highest altitude cities like São Joaquim or Urubici, which are both located in Santa Catarina.
Although it doesnt snow every year and it usually only lasts a day or two.
The owner of the vineyard has italian-brazilian accent. Hahaha!

Que mania chata de brasileiro falar que o sul do Brasil não parece Brasil. Meu filho, a mata não é igual da Europa, as cidades tem algo de Europa, mas não é igual cidade da Europa. É Brasil também, mania de achar que só o sul do Brasil é europeu e diferente. Aqui no estado do RJ tem várias cidades serranas colonizadas por europeus tb, o que mais tem no país são cidades colonizadas por europeus. E no sul também há várias culturas e etnias, não tem só branco.
Concordo totalmente! Chega a ficar chato e vergonhoso esse negocio de reforçar a presença da cultura europeia no Sul.

Há um tronco em comum em todas as regiões, tem brasileiro que fala do sul como se fosse um mundo a parte, algo de outro planeta e perfeito. Fui pra lá e não fiquei de boca aberta como se fosse um mundo mágico não, e olha que eu fui em lugares turísticos cheio de descendentes de alemães e italianos, algo não muito distante de outros estados brasileiros. Agora, andando de ônibus pelo rio grande do sul e vendo as paisagens das cidades vi sim periferias, cidades iguais as que tb tem em vários estados, vi gente de todas as cores, assim como em todos os outros estados. Nada novo sob o sol. Sim, lugar bonito, não precisa desmerecer nenhuma região, mas não é um lugar diferente a ponto de ser tratado como "não parece Brasil".

Oque aconteceu foi o seguinte os europeus primeiro viéram pro RJ e Pra Salvador para plantar só que são terras de muito calor então voltaram pra Europa em segunda tentativa foram pro Sul do Brasil plantar uvas e deu certo por causa do clima então foram chegando muitos europeus então surgiu a ideia deles separa o Rio Grande do Sul do Brasil e foi oque aconteceu Rio Grande do Sul se tornou um país por anos criando sua própria cultura chimarrão suas proprias vestimentas que ate hoje são muito usadas então por isso dizem que o Sul ñ é Brasil

Yes, we DO HAVE snow in Brazil, not every year, not a lot, but we surely have, 4 days ago we had some tiny snowflakes falling. The last time we had a good amount of snow here in southern Brazil was 2013, just google it. 😉

South of Brazil has a strong european descendence and is really beautiful and cheap for american and europeans tourists.
Champagne is only produced in France, in the Champagne region. It’s a DOC (dénomination d’origine contrôlée), which means only sparkling wines made there can be called champagne. Here we produce sparkling wine with the same methodology (champenoise), but not champagne. The authorization earned by Peterlongo was a decision from our Supreme Court (STF), that has no authority over the denomination.

O estadunidense adorou Porto Alegre, ele não sai do Rio Grande do Sul, lá tem muita comida e bebida da melhor qualidade. Quem diria e eu achava que era em São Paulo porque tem tradição italiana também e restaurantes com as melhores comidas do mundo. Isso prova que os brasileiros são bons de boca.
São Paulo é coisa de napolitano e esse sul é trentino.

What are you talking about? What exactly is "a disgusting lie"? The violence? Politicians' incompetence? The favelas? The covid crisis? Last time I checked, being a Brazilian, these are all true. Of course it doesn't represent all that Brazil is, but news shows aren't supposed to be documentaries about the best places to visit. For that there are great shows on "main media" (I guess you meant mainstream) such as Globo Reporter.

Curiosity is that most Italians who went to southern Brazil came from the Veneto region, visit the canions in Cambará do Sul, São José dos Ausentes and region, because they are very beautiful

Apparently Southern Brasil is the region where wine is produced. Their climate is similar warm temperate to Uruguay, Argentina and Chile.
If you stay in Brazil for a month, you will return home fluently hahaha
