I can give you a down low explanation. The earphones you normally use, the ones with a 3.5 mm plug, are analog as in they require electricity to move magnets inside the housing the hertz of the electricity being sent out is an analog signal that determines how much the magnets move making different frequencies of sound. Now digital signals (think MP3, youtube audio etc.) all have this information within their code but your earphones have no way of processing this info as it's in 1s and 0s and not electricity, what a DAC does is converts the binary of the digital media on your phone or computer and converts it into an analog electrical signal that can be used to make the magnets in your earphones move and hence produce sound.
