Bought a 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid with Technology package for $48750 plus tax a week ago. Quiet, smooth, with great driving dynamics. It feels quick, nimble, agile. Very pleased.
My dad got the 2018 MDX, so not too far off. Rides well, feels great, and the only issue he ever had was the wireless key acting up in 11° Fahrenheit winter weather.
Yes. This brings back all the features like the adaptive suspension I had in my 2012 MDX Advance. Loved that car. Glad Acura is bringing back all the features they took away from the MDX Advance in this current generation.
Best car reviews on RUclips. A little motor trend (0-60s), a little saabkyle (in depth), engineering explained (technical info) and best graphics. Well done Alex
Great detailed review Alex. I have a '16 RLX Sport Hybrid and remember your review of the early 2014 release. You seem to be more convinced and understanding of the Acura Sport Hybrid mission than you were with the RLX review. I think these cars are engineered well over the price point and I am fascinated how well integrated these systems are. Everything from the smooth Start / Stop, to the regeneration dynamics added to SHAWD to the POWER without penalty is quite an achievement. Depending on how your drive the car, and selectable settings, you have a vehicle with multiple, and contrasting personalities from conservative efficiency to precise handling to unexpected power.
A quick update to my week old (then) MDX Hybrid. The support person found that a backup fuse had dislodged during transport to the dealership, causing the vehicle to shutdown. Not sure how to react. However, driving is a dream and the engine sound in Sport+ mode with the paddle shifters are a sweet new experience for me. Just wish the infotainment system was as good as it was on my old Lex 350.
A great car. I have the 2019 with Tech. Excellent value. Doesn’t feel like a big car to drive, lot of power and great handling. It is not as luxurious as other brands and even the new RDX interior seems more special and hitech. However, overall the interior is nice. The infotainment system is a weak spot, but it’s functional and, with the addition of apple carplay and android auto, I think there nothing much to complain about.
Honestly to me the Acura is amazing especially given the price point. Love the standard torque hectoring, display screens size, and led headlights. A great drive for a vehicle of this size. Would love to see this hybrid drivetrains in the RDX
As always, your reviews set the bar, Alex. Just get better and better! Got to say this MDX Sport Hybrid sure ticks just about all the boxes for me. Can't wait to go take one out for a spin. Keep up the great work! Many thanks!
Thanks for the review. I feel like upgrading from a Pilot to a MDX is hard to justify. And with tax credits for the PEV x5 or xc90 kind of push it to: load up a Pilot or jump up to the PEV suvs. Can't wait for the Ioniq review
Hi Alex, as always another excellent detailed review! I own 2017 MDX (non hybrid), the ZF9 transmission definitely feels bumpy on lower gears. I test drove Hybrid MDX today, it feels much smoother and responsive. But it still has the old (2 screen) infotainment system which is outdated. (where as Honda Pilot already received updated infotainment system). I am waiting for the next MDX Hybrid with updated infotainment system, then it will be worth upgrading!
Could it be because the MDX has a wider range all over the world, whilst the escalade mainly aims at the US market which has a stricter ruling on lighting. It's a shot in the dark.
Freethinking Влади́мир that has nothing to do with it.. an corolla has standard LED headlights.. it's just another cost cutting factor that GM always does.
Interestingly, with discounting available now, this Sport Hybrid with adjustable dampers and other improvements costs only about $3K more than the new 2019 Acura RDX A spec and even less than the Advance trim. You lose the better infotainment, but get a bigger, just as quick, just as good handling, vehicle. Solid value here.
I think RX450h should more score in this video because when We buying a car reliability counts a lot specially talking about hybrid system. Overall, if people looking third-row hybrid system wheel than MDX Hybrid is good choice but don't forget Lexus is going introduce third row Hybrid RX soon. BTW I am going to be a RX450h owner in next two months
Another great review Alex. I know the MDX Hybrid doesn't tow but were you able to see if it can still bolt on the hitch? I wouldn't use it for towing but would need it for a bike rack and/or cargo tray.
Thanks for the review. I'm curious about how the MDX would handle the snow with relatively low-powered electronics driving the rear wheels. Seems like it would have more of a front-wheel drive feel which would, in theory, feel a little less secure on bad roads.
Thank you for the detailed review Alex. I have a 2017 Acura MDX and have approx 5k miles on. I'm consistently seeing ~22 mpg in the city, highway mileage seems fine (24-25). Attempting to resolve this with Acura - would appreciate any feedback from you or fellow Acura MDX hybrid owners. (P.S. I have benchmarked against 2 other mdx hybrids which give >24 MPG city, so it seems to be just my car for now)
Acura MDX - I have Lexus rx450h 2013 awd and never get over 22mpg with AC on and mixed all around driving and am a fast driver, often I get 20 and 21 all around. I only get 24 on highway if go real easy. Wish I knew. Might have gone diesel x5
Excellent review, Alex! Love your videos. I'm considering buying MDX Sport Hybrid but also interested in Audi Q7, 3.0t. Both have pros and cons, towing is not the issue. Based on your experience of driving fun and feel, which one would you buy? Thanks a lot!
I looked at you review from back when to consider and buy a MDX hybrid. You had replied on facebook, thanks! BTW, I might have said it back then, you were listening to bollywood!
Hi Alex. Your reviews are awesome! Does the Hybrid MDX drive more like a FWD vehicle than the regular MDX because it can only power the rear wheels with the electric motors?
Alex, your videos are great and very informative and I have used them in my search for a new SUV. I recently test drove the new VW Atlas and am wondering when you will get a chance to review it and share your opinion. Thanks.
I would go for 18-20 models because of the updated info-tainment with Carplay. You have to add aftermarket Carplay for around $500 to the 17 MDX hybrid. It can also be an issue with some models of the 17 MDX with old discontinued 3G modules for Acuralink.
Mostly agree Alex. A little speedy but you do help my auto purchase decisions. And you're right -- who's going to tow anything? Most people won't. Those days are gone.
Just 8 days into ownership my MDX acted all weird today with Red signals all over the place. I got a U0369 or some kind of error code and then AcuraLink sent a message which read Brake System failure & LKAS System failure. Had to drive it back to the dealership. Whats going on Honda Corp ?
The 17-20 MDX Sport Hybrid uses a Port Injection 3.0L NA V-6 that can run on 87-91 Octane You don't have to worry about carbon build-up on the intake valves like dome DI engines. It states the Sport Hybrid has VCM; but, I've never felt/hear it engage on my 19 MDX Sport Hybrid in +4 years and +44,000 miles.
@@harrytej I always try and use Sams or Costco (top tier for Costco) 91 Octane. Their prices for 91 are very close to the corner store gas station 87-89. I also live/drive 5000-7200 feet and the 3.0L is already down on hp/tq by 15%-20%; but, the electric motors fill in for the I.C.E. reduced power. Plus, the electric sport hybrid doesn't have the same amount of drivetrain loss like other mechanical awd systems. Sams/Costco don't have mid grade at the pumps and I would probably use that if they did. I just stick with 91 and lean towards top tier fuels when I need to fill up when traveling. I always seem to stay within my 24-26 city/hwy/combined mpg average and 425-450 miles per 19 gal tank with that formula.

It has a great deal to do with the design of the suspension as well. The Volvo XC90 T8 puts down more power and torque on the front axle vs the RLX and doesn't have the same torque steer issue.
No car maker has that. GM is closest with its track recorder but the resolution is god awful like a cheap smartphone and unusable for reading any plates.
Alex - The MDX SH with Adv Package has a small port behind the steering wheel beneath the windshield. I suppose this was some sort of headups display ? Is it operartional or just a dummy port ? I just bought the Sport Hybrid after seeing this review and can't figure out how that thing works. The dealer had no clue either.
I like car, like I keep up with ever vehicle a lot... But only a couple days ago I found out about this Crossover by searching for used car on carguru, I lost my touch a little!!!
Alex, it's down to a choice between the Acura hybrid and the Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription. With discounts on the Volvo they are relatively close in price. Which would you choose and why? Lease or purchase? Thanks!
I found the Acura MDX hybrid to be sportier than the Volvo. The 7 speed dual clutch and torque vectoring system are phenomenal. You may find Acura customer service a bit disappointing should you encounter issues with your Acura (rotor issues, transmission woes, mpg etc). I did not know this but seems like Acura pulled out of BBB in 2012.
Here's why the Acura is better for me. Storage. Places to put stuff in the front seat like phones, wallets, keys, change, receipts, pass cards, etc. For such a big vehicle the XC90 has almost no cubby space. One small cupholder sized square is about it. And doing everything through the screen is a hazard when driving. I say this as a two time Volvo owner, including one currently. Very good looking in comparison, but less reliable and less day-to-day liveable.

Haha to whoever was listening to the Bollywood channel at 11:09
Don't need family car. I'll wait for RDX hybrid..

Something I'm pretty sure the Advanced package has but didn't see mentioned - A heads up display
Im confused as well.. it does have something near windshield to project something.. but I toggled through and I didn’t find any control for HUD
@@harrytej Mystery solved: I bought one this weekend. It does not show the information you see in a regular hud. When you get too close to the car in front it flashes amber lights in the hud. I heard it can also display other warning lights through it but not confirmed
@@nman2563 hmm 🤔 i think i did see something orange when breaking.. didn’t realize that its the HUD 👍
@@nman2563 the newer gen or the previous gen?
@@harrytej The same one in this review. The 2022 model has a fully featured hud
