    Kudos! This is the same ulnar deviation, bowing, and the release that legendary long hitter Mike Austin taught me back in the late 1990's! You are also adding energy to the clubhead. Slap something with the back of your lead hand with a flat wrist while holding that position. Then try it with a bowed lead wrist and let it fly, that is, extend. The latter provides much more power. Thanks!

    Cheers Padraig. Great lesson and one to watch often for me. So much of golf is technique and thus concept driven. If we give our brain the correct conceptual method and set it on the right path it will simply do a lot of the work for us with natural error correction as we practice/play. And just as importantly it will not work against us with its own faulty ideas. 💡

    Paddy really answered several of my questions. Don't make the club face strong until downswing/transition because you don't need to close it like that on short game shots (shorter swings)... makes perfect logical sense and is less confusing long term. Please let me know if this is not what you meant, Mr. P. From 20 degrees to 5 degrees really explains it well.

  • @3putt548

    Fascinating! It does go against the grain of what quite a few pro’s teach. They seem to encourage more shaft lean at the point of contact. Thus actually de-lofting the club. I always sort of questioned this, since irons are more de-lofted than they were 15-20 years ago. I used to be a pretty good player years ago. I was 5-7 hdcp at my peak. Paddy said he hits his 9 iron 160 yds. I averaged 140 back than. Now at 70 yrs old the best I can muster is 110 yds. Loss of flexibility has taken its toll. Now getting any height is a struggle with my mid irons, along with hitting the ball first and then the turf. I’ll give Paddy’s instructions a go. Maybe I can pick up 10-15 yds but not actually flip the club. Thanks Paddy.

    Dear Mr Harrington! Thanks for your excellent advises in golf - they are so much concepted getting a natural moved swing than others and they help me getting a more powerfull swing than I had in the past. The main difference in modern golfswings and the distance which ich results is, that the clubs are "delofted" in the impact so that a 9 iron has more the distance of a 7 or 6 iron.... This is possible because a lot of companies are producing different typs of shafts who bring the ball up in the air - for example your KBS shafts. If the irons become longer, the closed and delofted face becomes more and more a problem in combination with the longer shafts - but here are helping all the hybrids and driving irons in modern golf.
    I'm still hitting the balls with the loft a golfclub really has and so my 9 iron is maybe 150 with a good shot. For me is important hitting a green near trhe flag, not hitting with a short iron a 190 shot (which I pull left at the end...). And if you watch Tiger Woods maybe with his good old low launching DG x100 shafts, he is hitting a longer iron than other modern players (maybe a Pwedge for 120), but he is winning with the masters two years ago again. And "shorties" like Langer are still better in augusta than many others in the past, for example like DeChambeau. If he would be one or two iron longer, he maybe would still play for the title in augusta. But he is not, he is as long as I'm; it was so in the past with persimmon woods and is now the same. I hope your tips bring me this iron longer iron distance I need for getting my controlled short iron shot to the greens I'm looking for - maybe with a delofted iron.
    All the best please and stay safe!

    Wow, you use your wrists! I’ve been cupped and across the line for most of my golfing history but a few weeks ago I made a change. My goal was to get bowed at the top of the backswing and turn hard. I’ve certainly added distance by doing this but it’s not a natural position for me and it’s hard work. Also I find it hard to find the sweet spot on each swing. However based on your advice Padraig (thanks so much for sharing) I’ll now try to add in some “flip/left wrist extension” when I next play. It now appears blindingly obvious that the extremely bowed DJ must be extending his left wrist into impact otherwise he’d surely smother everything left and doesn’t he play with a controlled fade now. PS I won a few quid on you from the bookies when you won at Carnoustie - thanks for that also.

    • @markrowley4397
      @markrowley4397 3 года назад

      May I ask how did it go for you when you extended through impact after bowing wrist on backswing/downswing?

    • @davidstevan1
      @davidstevan1 3 года назад +1

      @@markrowley4397 Not very well (too inconsistent) so I quickly gave up trying! What appears to working however (for my last 2 rounds anyway!) is Padraig's advice on the shoulder turn. I'm now concentrating on my right shoulder moving back and up. This has stopped me moving off the ball as much in the back swing and kept me a bit taller - my old thought of turning the left shoulder under my chin was producing a sway and an excessive dip! Good luck with your game.

    • @gazstaf
      @gazstaf 3 года назад

      davidstevan1 David, that shoulder turn is what Hogan called his 'Magical Device' Ted Hunt mentions this in his books,Ben Hogans's tips for weekend golfers and Ben Hogan's short game simplified. I've been playing golf for 35 years and wish I'd read this back then, with limited practice I've gone from to shooting in the high eighties to busting eighty on three occasions.

      Been playin for 30+ years and I just discovered this as well. I used to be cupped in the backswing then learned in the last year or so to get it flat/bowed in the backswing but I didn't know how to release it. Now I just dump it all on the ball by trying to actively flex the trail hand (think Couples) in the follow through. It is amazing the difference. Fully compressed shots for first time in ages.

    Very well explained on both Videos Padraig. What I love about this is the deviation away from some of the modern principles. Golf in some ways gas gotten way too mechanical. Some players are almost afraid to use the wrists being told it's bad. Wrists add much more speed through the ball when used properly.

    Padraig, thanks for all your videos they are really a source of wisdom I keep coming back to lately. Could you help me with the explanation from 6:00 - 6:45 about this bowing action happening "naturally" for most people. This has been something I have struggled with for my entire golfing experience so forgive the lengthy explanation but I want to be precise, forgive me also I'm an engineer. The reason being for me, no matter how I grip the club(Strong, neutral or weak) when I take the club back to the top I have a cup in my left wrist (to give you an idea, at address if I cock my wrists straight up without moving anything else this cup is the same position at the top) Granted the grip changes where the club face is at the top (either closed, neutral or toe down) but the cup in the wrist is always there. Now for me what I feel is natural is that this cup remains nearly until my wrist unhinge at the bottom of the swing. To further explain, if I feel my grip pressure is 3/10, and my wrist firmness is 0/10, these same positions will be created "naturally" if I swing the club back and forth in a perpetual motion drill letting centrifugal force of the club and gravity doing all the work. I can create a flat left wrist at the top of the back swing and do this bowing action you describe in the downswing, but it feels like I am fighting the way the club wants to swing naturally. Now my question is this, should I fight what I feel is natural to me and practice this bowing action until possibly one day it becomes "normal"? I know at 6:45 you say this should happen naturally for "most" people, if one finds themselves not included in the most should they try to train the action to be normal or stick with what they have. Thank you for your time if you have made it this far. I would appreciate any feedback, if any others have insight, or are like myself.
