    Hello Mam, is it necessary to add Conc. H2SO4 to the copper sulphate solution just before adding Ammonia?

    • @manishajain1974
      @manishajain1974  Год назад +2

      Nishant.... Addition of dilute (not conc.) sulphuric acid to aqueous copper sulphate solution is required to prevent hydrolysis of cupric ions especially if the solution is to be left at resting for longer times.
      However in this preparation one doesn't need to add acid for two reasons....1) we are using the aqueous solution of copper immediately in this preparation. In that small time, hydrolysis of cupric ions doesn't take place
      2) Ammonia is being added as ligand. If acid is present, a large amount might be used to neutralize the acid first before the actual complexation reaction begins. This may result in use of too much ammonia and unnecessary dilution of the reaction mixture. Dilution may lead to reduced precipitation of product thus decreasing the yield

    Explain briefly why you would expect a colour change during the reaction process?

    • @manishajain1974
      @manishajain1974  Год назад

      Soma, Colour changes have different reasons at different stages of the reaction. Initial blue white precipitation (observed when ammonia is added slowly) is due to precipitation of basic copper sulphate and final deep blue colour is because of the complexation process. You must have studied about electronic transitions in coordination compounds of d block elements

    We done it by cooling, not heating

    • @manishajain1974
      @manishajain1974  Год назад

      Cooling is also a commonly employed procedure for getting the solid product. However cooling results in smaller crystal size with simultaneous precipitation of less soluble impurities also(if any) at low temperature

    Why is product washed with ether,?

    • @dr.manishagupta9336
      @dr.manishagupta9336 3 года назад +3

      We have not washed with ether here...
      Washings with ether help in removal of moisture from the product and assist in rapid drying as ether itself is highly volatile...
      Unless and until it is too necessary requirement for a product to dry rapidly, one should restrict the use of ether as it is highly flammable. Being volatile, vapours spread very fast if washings are not done in fumehood....
