Hi, and thanks for your video. It's been 11 months since it was made, and I'm wondering what you can report on how your stenciling project is holding up in what appears to be a high-use area. I'm particularly curious because the Armorseal Treadplex white first coat was an acrylic (water-based) product and the stencil paint was an oil-based product -- layering an oil over an acrylic is rather unusual. Did someone recommend this method of using the products? Has the stencil paint held up? What level of wear are you seeing (marks, scratches, damage, peeling, if any). I am getting ready to do a small kitchen floor with a base coat and stencil paint, and I would dearly love to use an oil-based industrial style paint combination. Did it take the oil-based stencil paint a long time to dry? Would appreciate more info. Thanks!
Hi there Barbara. Sorry for my delay. Thank you for your comment and questions. I can safely say that it has held up to foot traffic well beyond our expectations. Our paint selections were based off of what they said at the Sherwin Williams store and we have been happy. Both the base and the stencil paint have held up very well and that is a high traffic area. We have some shoe baskets that we slide in and out and those have significant wear. However we knew that going into it that that particular use would be an issue. I should have put felt pads under the baskets but oh well. We allowed the oil based paint to dry for at least 24hrs. I think if you do it right you will be very pleased. I will warn that it did take a long time to complete with doing the stencil work, but we are still very happy with it!
Last follow up question. How many hours of stenciling do you guess it took? I’m doing a much larger area and I’m trying to get a guesstimate. Looks so good 👍👍
We did and we didn’t. I know that’s confusing. For normal walking the type of paint is very durable. We learned that over time. However with sliding baskets, such as our kids shoe baskets, it wore down over time. That’s why I just actually tore out the floor and am doing tile. I’ll have a video on that soon. I think for normal walking and minimal traffic areas I would still do the paint. Our area is very high traffic and we lived and learned! Thanks for asking.
I’m doing my shop floor and as you said.. Very time intensive!.. in my learning curve.. I have 2 stencils..& learned Quickly.. the tip of keeping them clean! The great thing is.. it’s my wood shop floor.. it’s gonna have a Lot of stuff coming in and out..& I’m foreseeing a Lottta boo-boos to come!.. I’m considering this my practice Before I move into more DIY in my house! I Do have a , and I think this is a Huge tip I accidentally discovered..& that’s having a stencil sized container (I used one of my plastic storage container drawers.. worked like a Charm!) with about 4 inches of paint thinner in the bottom (duh!.. where else could it be! Bahahaha). I’d let them soak for about 3-5 minutes.. flip them.. them carefully use a scotch brite or similar as needed..& I stress..gently!… to remove the paint!..lot less labor intensive fur sure!
It’s about 8 feet x 6 feet. It took us about two days I think. First date was prep and base coats. Second day was stenciling stars. Probably 4-6 hours on the stars if I remember right.
You didn’t tell how you start to get a straight line. I don’t want my stencil to be crooked, and I already have the exact stencil that you have but I want to start with a straight line. Not all outside walls are already straight.
We just went with our walls if I remember right and the wood floor lines that we painted over helped. I’m sure you could do a light pencil or chalk line too.

You guys didnt feel the need to clearcoat it to protect it when you were done?

I was wondering the same. I just painted my bathroom floor and am planning on clear hard-coating it after stenciling.

I taped down a 1x2 & a 6 foot aluminum straight edge according to my walls..
Why didn’t you use an adhesive on the tile to prevent bleeding?
We wanted to be able to lift it easily and move to the next one. I hope that answers your question!
It doesn't require a sealant once the stencils are painted on?
Yes. Looking back, we should have done that since it is such a high traffic area.
Could this be done on a Saltillo tile?
