Cesare Siepi was no stranger to Wagner, having sung Gurnemanz in PARSIFAL at the Met. His recording of Wotan's Farewell and the Magic Fire Music is outstanding.
This is magnificent. Majestic tone and pure Italian legato (in contrast to the ugly barking ofsingers today in this part). There is absolutely nothing unacceptable about his German. Gurnemanz was one of his last roles at the Met.
Mil Gracias Por Compartir!
Siepi is my favourite basso. I had never heard him before in Wagner. His German accent is pretty good, and, as always, his diction is admirable. Wonderful singer; off to Amazon now to see if I can find more Wagner from him. Thanks for this WeicheWotanWeiche.
His German diction is better than that of many German singers - and I'm speaking as someone who's conducted and coached opera in Germany for almost 40 years.
Cesare Siepi was unquestionably one of the finest bass-baritones of operatic history. I find I enjoy him most from the middle of this excerpt onward. His lyricism, evenness of scale, and tonal beauty serve this music very well. I admit that I prefer others in this role, although I find Siepi unsurpassed in much of the Italian repertoire.
@@falkfinkabsolutely.....not. Most of the time they sing same roles but a bass-baritone is expected to be slightly higher with more punch in the top notes whereas basso cantante are more homogenous from bottom to top notes. London is a bass baritone and ridderbusch is a basso cantante for example
I don't think Siepi was ideally suitable for hard, brutal characters. I think Wotan is good fit for him, especially in this scene where his heartbreak and love for his daughter should be communicated.
Ascolti Fritz Wunderlik cantare Bohème in tedesco....
@@casaavita Hai assolutamente ragione!
SIEPI was extraordinary. A voice at once big, wide-ranged and beautiful.

Beautiful! He sounds so warm and velvety.

David Campbell it's My Favorite Too! The Most Beautiful Voice that i've ever Heard!!
What a great voice ... AND: you understand every word ...
Il piu grande Basso de tutti i tempi cantando Wotan...sono veramente felice!!!!!!
Carlos Esquivel Veramente!! Il Grande Siepi!
Gràcies per oferir-nos aquesta joia.

Siepi is great but I think he is more suitable for Hunding.
Or Verdi.. 😂
@@tenoremodernotecnicavecchi2151 But definitely not Attila because it's way too high for him.

@@revivaljesus But he could sing Boito’s Mefistofele very well.

Oh, please, Siepi can't definitely sing Wagner, not to mention Wotan, how could he possibly think?
Would you mind explaining why? It would be most generous, I’m very curious! Thanks in advance!
Please post Wotan's Farewell as sung by another great basso, Jerry Hines!
