I'm not in the market for buying a narrowboat, but this video is really interesting. And if you were in the market for one, this video is gold. I'm a motorhome nomad.
Magnesium anodes in freshwater. That's a particularly useful tip about the engine compartment partition, I wrongly assumed they'd all be steel. Hull condition is the bit I'm dreading when buying. Some boats that are 10 years old or less can have way worse hulls than others that are many decades old. There's so much conflicting knowledge out there on how to preserve a hull, owners may have believed they were really looking after their hull when they're not. It can also very much depend on how well the hull was prepped and what blacking system was used when the boat was built. It's a head ache. Thanks for the vid
For some reason everything these days seems to be a big old headache. I’m trying to look for Internet at the moment for the narrowboat. And I’d say that’s even worse than buying one. Haha
Good vlog, its important to know what you want before you even look for a boat!!! We have had Sarah Kay for a year and still do not know how some things work. 😂 take care both alison and Mike Narrowboat Sarah kay
As a buyer always get your own survey its the difference between loosing the cost of the survey against loosing it all buying a boat that can not be insured or licenced and means you will not be able to put the boat back in the water .Or a huge overplating welding bill that you may not be able to afford meaning you loose everything .
Thanks for the info. That is really helpful. When looking at an engine do you need to be mindful of the mileage as you would a car? How long do boat engines generally last before you need to replace them?
That’s a good point to be honest. I’ve never really considered it. I know the old engines last a lot longer than the new ones. in my Boat it’s the same engine from the 70s
@@jb-zr4ez Marine diesels work on hours and not mileage and if services and maintenance is regularly done then they can last a long time. The other thing is the cleanliness of the fuel being used a inline fuel polishing system is worthwhile to install to extend engine life.
Thanks a lot man that was really informative!

Thank you so much
Such a helpful vlog Charlie - would love to own a boat but don’t think it’s in the stars for me. Never mind, I’ll just keep watching you and Basil ☺️
Thank you so much that’s really kind. Have you thought about maybe checking out some holiday boats and take some time off

I hundred percent agree with this. I know lots of people that bought boats without a survey and got scammed. Is the most important thing.

Not really... the big thing is it's service history. Well looked after engines will go for years as they are simple lumps....
@@robtheplodThank you.
