Oshoala was making some seriously good in runs so much space. I think Arsenal defence was more concerned about keeping their defensive shape rather than individual duels. Barca just had too much time and freedom to pick passes and make runs. Mourinho's Inter knew how to deal with such teams.

Arsenal messed this game up by trying to play the same way they played against City - let them have the ball and hit them on a counter. Only problem is, once Barca has the ball, they ain't letting it go anywhere. You have to fight them for it. We never did that at all well. This is probably why I feel we might still get beaten by Chelsea this season. We need to be wayyy stronger and fight for the ball more. I agree with those who said we should have tried to play our game and let our attack try to shine rather than sitting back. I think Eidevall learnt a big lesson today and if we can take that to improve, we'll be much better for it. BTW, I think he should have kept Miedema on when Tobin Heath came on.
Spot on man. Coach Jonas's approach (tactics) in this game was very wrong. It stifled our girls.
Can't concede goals like that against the top teams no matter what system you play....
In most other circumstances, I think you'd be very right: these negative tactics and being too defensive is a bad approach. But frankly, in this case, I think if Arsenal had gone further up the field and been more attacking, rather than conceding 4 goals off 37 (!) shots from Barca, it would've been ~8 goals off ~20 shots (or there abouts). ie Arsenal might've been able to possess the ball a bit more for longer periods up the field, but it would've left a whole lot of space and time in behind for Barca to capitalise on with their much greater.... umm.... football ability. Sorry, but in this case I don't think you can come up with that kind of tactical change which really would've improved the outcome.
Just imagine Hansen in particular with a bit more space in behind.... carnage.

All of them were straightforward to prevent. None were unstoppable amazing goals.
They were more concerned about keeping their shape rather than individual duels. Like the number 5 was caught out by Oshoala a lot because she was trying to keep in line with her fellow defenders and set the offside trap rather than track Oshoala and keep her busy. But it is a big lesson learnt. They will only improve.

Here I'll bring you back to reality for a few minutes.
The women's team would touch the ball once at kick off and about 20 times after that for each goal scored . For the men it would be like playing against their 5 year old little sisters holding a beer in one hand a sandwich in the other while wearing flip flops .

My review : First I have to say Barcelona midfielders are damn too good and their first touch one to one passing are way much better than any team in the WSL FA League. The midfielders through pass between our defenders was so accurate, timely and at right pace. They bossing the midfield. So that is my honest review on Barcelona.
For my team Arsenal : The main cause we lose today was at the midfield. Our midfielders were unable to battle with them and lost almost every challenge. We were too soft in the battle. We look so tired and no fighting spirit. We not marking them and let them move freely to any space they want without resistance. We allow them play as what they want and we were not playing as per our usual football. We respect them too much. Nobody press them in the midfield. We just waiting for the counter attack and it didn't work today.
Beattie is good in reading the game like BFG but she is just so slow to recover her speed on through ball and they scored twice on her weakness with such good through ball from their forwards Oshoala and Martens. Viv should not subbed and she should play with Tobin and Parris in the 2nd half because she doesn't get the service in the 1st half. Foord is not good enough for UCWL level. Lwabuchi should play earlier in the 2nd half because we were so weak in the midfield. At least in the 2nd half, we look like start playing our normal football back. We start to press and fight for the ball and no more waiting game / sitting back or look dead like in the 1st half. Both our wingers look more lively going forward. Today, we just playing football for 30 minutes.
Great review just a couple of things. They tried to press but you if leave the defensive line a Hansen or a caldentey move in between en than you're done. Second arsenal has to stick to there normal game but if they played like they did in the second half It would be devastating for arsenal even though you created 2 chances 1 and a half a real shot from Tobin you left alot of space in behind and if we made our chances it would have been like 7 or 8 goals against maybe 2 becuz barca are solid defensive and know each other tru and tru and Marta had maccabe in her pocket she couldn't do nothing miedema was marked or put offside clinically. You can't press patri thetas our busquets alexia is to calm on the ball and aitana will run circles on you with the ball her handeling is out of this world mariona is soo smart and never loses the ball its insane. And arsnel midieflder are totally players mrnt to work hard and take the ball so it was better for them that way becuz for like 35 minutes or so arsenal kept a clean sheet because they were disciplined in there agreements if you leave that barca Wil cut thru your defense like a knivr tru butter with the material Jonas had he did all he could.
There is no way you can play Barcelona using 3 forwards. Need to overpopulate the middle (add Katie and Jordan there) Arsenal looked better in the second half just because not even Barcelona (and no other team) can't apply that super high pressing for 90 minutes (and play Lotte instead of Jen in defense) And not an excuse but UEFA referees blow the whistle for plays that are not foul in the WSL (like that penalty)
At first I was thinking that Arsenal players were definitely having a nervy, off game and Barca were just too superior but realised that what you pointed out about the formation/tactics being unsuitable against a well-oiled Barca midfield is right. when Aston Villa tried the low-lying defensive shape against us they did 4-5-1 which actually got bodies behind the ball but our 3 forwards were just isolated (and wasted) for almost the entire time they were on the pitch.
@@maumor2 That's a way but the issue is they play teams who play like that every weekend in the leauge. If they do play like that barca femeni stretch the field by using wingers finding the pockets to. Play in and move and overload players in the box and create chance after chance will caging the opponent in the midfield with defenders as wel. Keep in 2 at the back for the center forward and parades has strength and aggressiveness and pace and Mariah plays like the former pique real Smart and has impeccable timing and at the same time tracking back is easy when the distant is shorter. The problem is quality and experience.
✓ Zinsberger is not good enough to play for Arsenal.. she too slow in all GK aspect.. she is not aggressive enough.. if we want to win UCL trophies, we need a better GK than her..

Arsenal supporters seemed to be really disappointed but Barcelona players showed a very skillful squad. Fast and vertical attacking that Coygs did not show any resistance. Look at this agressive square (Putellas - Mariona - Hansen - Oshoala), played a heck of a match!

for the team is better to play with oshoala in terms of depth, I prefer to play with oshoala instead of jenni, jenni doesn't have that space reading and doesn't hold the central defenders as oshoala, but I would like to have a better striker than oshoala, someone like Miedema or Hegerberg

As a centre back Defender by trade you follow the attacker rather than appeal for offside. If not given then you are too late and haven't a hope. . Offside is what the linesperson is there for

Barca is a great team
This Barca side is a full pack od pure football mates. The only way to open them up is their right wing when their no 8 Marta going forward. Even then it's a small chance If Patri Guijarro is on the field. The most Impressive player on this side Carolin Graham Hansen. You won't see her much in these highlights. But If you watch the full game, She is the trouble maker in the pitch. She spreads opposition defends beyond their limits and dribble past 2 or 3 defenders every time to cross inch perfect crosses. And even without the ball, her presence in the wide right wing gives too much space for their midfielders like Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldente. Then there is Marta Torrajon who always comes for Graham's aid when she is outnumbered by the opponents. They are unplayable at the moment. The only thing they lack is the quality in finishing. If they could finish atleast 70% of the chances they are creating, they can score atleast 7 or 8 goals in every game.
The addition of Irene Parades from PSG gave them an unbelievable motivation to go forward. You can see Mapi leone goes forward and distributes the balls every time when Irene and Patri are in the field. Then one of the most important thing in the side is their midfield. If you have stronger midfield like that, you have won 90% of the game already. The only thing left is to execute the plan in the ground. And no words about Lieke Martens and Ana Crngocevic. These two can play all over the field when they are needed.

Going back to our games against Chelsea and Mancity, though we won both, it was obvious we struggled possession-wise. In both games, we had possession just little above 35%, which is unarsenal like. It was more like the girls were told (forced) to play that way by the coach.
Chelski and ManChitty played Barca last year.

Heath's experience will help but I don't see anyone in Arsenal's midfield dynamic enough to compete at such elite level therefore they will not go very far.

Arsenal's #1 Manuela Zinsberger, is not the 1 vs 1 type of goalkeeper. #5 Jennifer Beattie, is not the dare-to-take-risk type of defender, like Barcelona's #4 María Pilar León. #6 Leah Williamson, is not the type of defender that shows confidence on handling crosses, and long ball. #16 Noëlle Maritz, instead of letting Barcelona's # 22 Lieke Martens to build a nest between her and Williamson, Maritz should constantly push Martens toward the sideline, in order to buy time for Williamson and Beattie to close down the central pathway if needed. If #19 Caitlin Foord knew how to use her body language to trick Barcelona's #4 María Pilar León (pretended to pass to #77 Tobin Heath), then León probably wouldn't dare to shoulder check her at the edge of the box. #77 Tobin Heath, well, has a strong tendency to run into a narrower shooting angle, so it makes the tactics on defending her, unfortunately, pretty straight forward. On top of that, It seems like so far, #23 Mana Iwabuchi, is the only one who could read Heath's pass.
