  • Adesope Olajide aka Shopsy in conversation with DJ Maphorisa, giving insight into growing up in Pretoria, South Africa. We hear about his musical inspirations; his gospel background and musical family. Maphorisa explains falling in love with afro-house music, leading to producing and DJ gigs. He praises DJ Mujava’s sound as well as Angola, Mozambique and DRC Congo’s dance moves! Shopsy discusses how South Africa has led sound in Africa, including kwaito in the 90’s and how Nigeria has borrowed its sounds.
The pair talk about the 2013 hit ‘KHONA’ by Mafikizolo (ft Uhuru). Maphorisa talks about his relationship with Wizkid; connecting through music, hearing amapiano in Pretoria together and credits Wizkid with putting him onto amapiano. Maphorisa shout outs Davido for giving credit to the sound’s origins and admits he once disliked African artists taking off with the sound without giving credit but had to let it go when he knew he created something the world loved! They talk about the success of Maphorisa co-headlining across the UK and having the first black sold-out show at the Ministry of Sound in London in nearly a decade. They discuss the session set up by Pie Radio where Maphorisa met young creatives who played music to him and gained his advice. Maphorisa says it’s important to him to share the amapiano sound and continue the legacy.
Maphorisa answers questions from the audience; how to maintain and cultivate work relationships as a producer, giving an example of Kabza De Small. He answers what’s the difference between the sounds of amapiano, gqom and kwaito and why amapiano has reached new heights. Maphorisa recommends artists to look out for including MDU aka TRP.
Shopsy speaks on the passing of African artists Hip Hop Pantsula and Riky Rick and Maphorisa shares his reaction, suggesting in these times we need to talk to and take care of each other. He gives advice on marketing amapiano and for young people in the music industry to keep pushing the sound. Maphorisa also reveals which track didn’t blow up as much as he thought it would and how he likes to see DJs dance!

I have always longed for an English interview of Dj Maphorisa and up until now, I haven’t found one properly done!
Thank you Pie Radio and the interviewer who had clearly done his research to help create this beautiful interview.
Dj Maphorisa is probably the goat of the new school in SA when it’s all said and done. This is awesome! 🙌🏾💥

@@princethas2712 judging from this interview he can manage just fine. I think because he is soft spoken and also maybe not being very confident in english - most interviewers don’t even take that into account but they did well on Pie radio because he seemed very comfortable and as a result spoke more and stuff. I really enjoyed this one 👏🏾

This morning I listened to the the Uhuru album after years in the car. I used to pump it nonstop back in SA in 2014. It is such a timeless classic. Now I checked the booklet and learned that the guy who is one of the originators of amapiano has produced that album. Needless to say that I have been pumping amapiano heavily the last two years. I have been ignorant! Greetings from Germany

For SAns to not lose ampiano, I think they should collaborate with international artist. Perfect example... if Maphorisa and Kabza could produce a track and then feature a Stomzy, and a SA artist like Dali or something in one song. That's would be like a cheat code co sign to the grammys or some shit.
