  • Today I take my Fuji X-T3 on a landscape photography trip to the hills of Northumberland. I explore a valley that I have never been to before, but the blue skies make it a challenge, but I overcame this by creating simple compositions which excluded the sky.

Heartland Light... I'm ONLY 60 and I hear ya, bro! It is people like Thomas, Sean Tucker, Simon Baxter, etc., who have inspired me to focus a bit more and harder on my photography and my documentation of it. Simon Baxter has had to deal with chronic pain issues, as have I, and so I'm learning that going out and shooting as though THAT is my LIFE, is helping me move beyond my limitations and slowing my aging. The “I have no style” statement is, I think, one of your greatest attributes. It means that you're versatile and adaptable. You can recognize beautiful scenes it all types of settings and environments, and you have the skills to post-process them appropriately. You are not bound by a specific style, nor are you crippled by an environment that doesn't meet the specific parameters that you typically adhere to.

I didn't realise how much I detest green until I tried to find something I own that's green... and I found it.... a cutting mat.
I know my photographs will never immortalize me but I was part of some guerrilla photography and video art that probably will in London on June 13 2020. Upon release of the artworks it will probably go viral as most of their artwork does!

I'm finding that my current photography is leaning more towards simple scenes and compositions too. For me it seems to be a response to the craziness and complexity of the world we're living in right now and my photography is a release from that noise and clutter. Great images Thomas, always a pleasure to see them and to get an insight into your thought processes along the way. Many thanks.

YOU have developed your PATIENCE in hunting down ONE photo for the day! I may be an old, long-time photographer, but I need more patience. I enjoy watching your videos. I've ordered an XT3. I have to wait 'till the end of January to get it.
I've used a Slik 2100 pistol grip since 2000.I wouldn't call it quick release but once the camera's on it, it feels the most secure of any head I've ever used. I've often thought of switching for something quicker but I figure it is so good, and having learned how to safely attach and remove cameras from it, it simply isn't worth discardigng and replacing. I trust it.
It surprises me that I've only met one other photographer who used it. And it was Gideon Mendel who made me decide to get it back then, in 2000. I see from his web page that he uses the Manfroto pistol grip too. It is quicker, lighter . . . hmmm. Portability . . . hmmm. I hate changing systems. But I think I'll like the XT3. I already bought a used XE1 and I like it. That made me decide to fo into the X system.
    I enjoy your videos.Thank you.

My take away from this video is that it's ok to ignore the dominant colour and flick over to Acros sometimes. As someone who knows very little about landscape photography, I just assumed that the many shades of green in such a location would be really important. But I guess with so much harsh afternoon light, the greens can become a bit lifeless. Acros was definitely the right move. Excellent video.

You should try looking in to infrared photography :) the harsh sunlight and middle of the day is a very good conditions to take pictures in infrared range it really opens up a lot for a landscape photographers because you can get a descent image in the middle of the day when normally there issint much you can do to get a descent image :) I recently bought an old canon 500d and got IR cut filter removed from it for a really cheap price. It is quite fun to play around with this camera, it is completely different experience because the light is quite different in infrared specter :)

I love this video and that 7:00 tree is a mind-blowing shot. I think the Fuji is a great minimalist landscape system that is accessible to the everyman, and I posit that APS-C makes prints up to around 17x22 just as sharp as FF... you just can't blow these ones up to 30x40 as well

    • @S3l3ct1ve

@@WallSt101 Yes, but then there is lenses quality, you can get better result on FF with cheaper glass then on APSC with cheaper glass, but then the price difference comes in...
Another thing to note is that the smaller the sensor, the faster the diffraction kicks in, so on APSC its between 5,6f-8f and diffraction takes away a lot of the sharpness especially from smaller details. On FF you can push it to like f11 if you need. You can observe these numbers on any MTF charts, APSC lenses just lose quality at those numbers, while FF lenses deliver most of the sharpness at f5,6 or so.
When i moved to FF from APSC I noticed that the images look a lot clearer, although mpx numbers between both cameras were really the same 18mpx on APSC and 21mpx on FF, but the pixel size do matter and it changes the overall image and how small details appear on it. I noticed that images from APSC camera looked a lot "dirtier" in same sense muddy, higher ISOs made it look even worse.

When you were gawking at the first tree, I saw a foxglove that might have responded well to the same treatment.

That second image makes me think of a fictional flag, with those three "stripes" and the tree like a crest in the middle. Beautiful!

Yeah style is a strange topic. I have 3 or 4 different styles, like a multiple personality disorder, but I like them all for their different reasons. It's more important to shoot what you love and be personally content with your images. Another great, honest video.

I like the narrated docu style way you made this video. Thanks for taking us along on your journey and giving us insight of your thoughts. Glad to see you’re shooting fuji again. :-). Great job

Can't wait to be able to travel to the UK again and visit my beautiful, native Northumberland. I couldn't recognise where you are but it looks stunning.

You're a better man than I am, Tom. Eight kms with a broken derailleur? No way!
    Two questions:
    1. Why do you crop in camera?
    2. What have you got against lens hoods?

Top notch video as always Thomas! I adore that song, goes so well with your travels. But, correct me if I am wrong, I'm sure Michael Keeps was the chap that done that. At least that's what's showing up everywhere!

You have some fantastic landscapes to be in, so it is always a pleasure to follow you and Mads Peter Iversen, our Danish landscape forographer. :-)

Nice to see the excellent Fuji delivering the goods. Good vlog, but one thing is puzzling me -since you had the glare and you weren't using filters, why no lens hood?

I don't think it's a question of style. It's more about the best treatment for the subject and working with the conditions you have at the time. You can't rely on the weather, especially 'Up North' in Blighty . 💂‍♂️

There are days when we just have to get out there and try, but there always tomorrow. Now I have been locked away for months and have at lest three more week before I aloud out. I will have to lean all about cameras again or just bye a iPhone... Thanks for trying Thomas.
