- We take the 2017 Yamaha YZ250X out for some really tight, really steep, technical single track to see how she does. Yes, it makes you work for things, but its certainly capable.

I have now had my 2007 YZ250 since new, for ten years! currently converting even further to off-road via 18"rear rim assembly. Best purchase I have or will ever make in my life, period.
Thanks for sharing.
Picked up a nice used 07 YZ250 this past spring. Unfortunately have not had it on the dirt yet but will be tearing it up come next spring/summer. 🏍💨
How many hours and rebuilds have you done ? Just got a new 20 yz250x hope to have it as well in 10 years
@relentless I have a 2017 yz250x and had about 40 to 50 hours on it. Just did a top end kit just because. It didn't need it but I want to keep this for a long time as well so I figured that it would be a good time to do it.
Matthew Hayden nice. I hear people making it to 100 hours before rebuild and saying everything still looks fine. Not really a risk worth taking for me being how easy and cheap it is to do a top end. I’ll probably do my first one around 50-75 hours. Only have 8 hours on it right now tho lol finally got it properly jetted , so rich from factory o
I've never used a two stroke before, and your videos on this bike make me want to sell my soul to try it haha.
@Gary Miller I’m a 2 stroke guy for obvious reasons but but my Honda 150 4 stroke is a reliable son of a gun
@Gary Miller that was a quick response
@Gary Miller haahahahah when am I not on
It's capable if you're capable.
True story.
Exactly!! I had a 2001 YZ250, and that thing could go anywhere I was capable of taking it
Does your buddy Scott still have this, Kyle?
Fellow Utahn here, enjoy your vids very much. I do a lot of mountain and desert trail riding on my 2015 YZ250F. Haven't done much single track, looks fun. The really think stuff, crawling through doesn't appeal to me much though. Glad you like it! Haha. I prefer to ride with more speed and momentum. Keep up the great vids!
Thanks for watching!
Hi Kyle. First, let me saw how much I enjoy your channel and insight into different bikes. Please, keep the videos coming!I think this video highlights the reason most of the hard enduro pro riders are on 300's and most racers are on the 250's. It seems the yzx250 is the bike to have anywhere other than first gear billy-goat trails.
Thanks for your support.
Have a 09 yz250 with a 300 kit on it and a gear box out of a wr450, it has all the low end you will ever need and power you will ever need. Ride heaps of tight technical trails and climbs and the thing is like a mountain goat, gets me over and up just out anything i point it at! love it and would only buy a newer one
Good stuff.
Bountiful, up from the mine. Great trail, it has gotten rutted out pretty bad, but still a great trail to give you a great work out. I've done it many times. Not for the faint of heart.
This bike make me work for it :)
This is exactly the video I wanted to see. I ride trails like that. I'll stick with my CRF250X 4stroke. It has good low end power, low gearing and electric start!
surfr8 good for lazy riders lol
I mostly ride that kind of terrain.
Sounds like for me, this Yamaha would need a flywheel, smaller sprocket in the front/bigger in the back, aftermarket hydraulic clutch, hand guards, electric start, bigger fuel tank and a skid plate........
Great videos guys!!
If it were my primary bike and I ride stuff like this all the time, I'd want a lower 1st gear. 2nd gear and up is great.
On the yz250's you can swap in a 1st or 1,2 or 1,5 or 5 th or 1,2,3 or all of the gears from a 1999 wr400 to get better ratios for your type of riding.
Your Videos have me damn close to pulling the trigger on one of these. They cost way less than a KTM in Canada.(Probably about $3000 cdn less than a 300 XC) I can hear that it wants a smaller front sprocket. Yamaha will sell a lot of these thanks to your Videos.
Have been watching this channel for a month or so would really like to see some longer trail videos
Now that's the kind of trails I love! but it kind of reminds me actually how important electric start is....Yamaha need to take that on board and a bigger fuel tank...wow would love to fly to America with my 450 exc and ride along with ya guys! interesting video 👍
Which country are you in?
Anytime, let me know.
You should do a meet at Akly MN and ride the single track trails next September I think it might be harder than that stuff
Braydon Strom EPIC!! Paul Bunyan is great! Better yet Theilman!
I know the low end rpm's are better for traction in the woods, but I was just waiting to hear the bike wind up and get that scream going. Great riding and video!
looks like alot more work to keep it going in the the tight stuff vs the 300s. One of the things I love about my Beta is that low end power. Absolutely awesome.
That YZ still looks like alot of fun though especially on a little more open flowing trail.
Thanks for another great video.
Yeah, this YZ250X is as fun as any bike I've even been around. I love it.
looks like some sweet riding! Your videos are always a good watch. keep up the good work.
Thanks for your support.
I love my yamahahaaaa... just change ur gearing and it will transform it to a weapon on tight stuff... i went up few teeth in the back and she is now a freight train on hills etc. yamaha did good on their pipes etc no need to do pipes. just sprocket to get nice low down pull and u dont lose much up top (which for technical rides you never need to be topped out anyway)
I think I'll keep it stock since this is a bike I won't be able to keep long term. Overall, I LOVE the bike. I can only afford to keep one bike long term if I want to review other bikes, so I'm not going to spend a bunch of time placing all sorts of mods on it...
1 minute mark, its hard to get wound up there!!!!! Great riding!! its steep and that rock is taller than it looks!!
B
Yes sir.
Hey Kyle,I've been watching your videos on your Yz250x. I myself have a 2016 Yz250x. First off man I would like to say I to absolutely love the bike. I've owned 450's and use to race them in Moto and In GNCC works races. I will say I have full confidence in this bike for GNCC style races. I just sold my other 450 the mother day. So for the YZ250x I have put some parts on the bike in stages to see the changes it has made so far a FMF Gnarly Pipe then a FMF turbine 2 silencer than a 13oz Fly wheel. Then went to a 13 counter sprocket for a shorter first gear. The pipe I will say definitely gave me the low end grunt that it needed to pull the gears but only when I added the silencer and a re-jet it came alive on the low end. And the Fly wheel helped carry out the the grunt throughout the powerband and it still had snap. And it won't stall unless you come to a complete stop without grabbing the clutch. And your not on the clutch all the time. Fly wheel was $100, pipe was $225 and silencer was $140. It totally changed the bike.
Hope that helps man. I also am interested in getting that 300 XC
Brandon Scott any reason you did front sprocket vs rear? Did you ride it much stock? I put on Gnarly, TC 2 and 8oz FWW. Thinking about going up 2 in the rear. What a great bike! Braaap
I did the 13 counter sprocket because it's the same effect as adding 2 teeth in the rear and they are cheaper than the rear sprockets. I go back and forth with the 13 and 14. The 13 takes a lot of high speed away but is amazing in tight single track with first hear. You can use the 14 with the running the 13oz flywheel in most tight rocky situations and still have that super tall 5th gear. But it has to be with a 13oz or greater. Because I have tried a 11oz and it won't have the same effect and it will still stall Easy.
Also I'm running the Yuma Lube 2R premix at 40:1
I've noticed it to run cleaner and smoother for single track.
Thanks for your input here.
Brandon Scott hi what jetting are you running and what elevation?
I really think a weighted flywheel and a sprocket change will make a massive difference. Also a Rekluse clutch would make this bike an incredible technical terrain machine. With the Rekluse you wouldn't be too phased about the electric start, because the clutch will disengage before the motor flames out/stalls. This is still a great value for money bike!
No offense, but this thing almost NEVER stalls, just flywheel, sprocket, and feather the clutch.
That's a gnarly trail, good riding Kyle! Bike seems very light, nimble and the motor is obviously proven. I'm too spoiled with the hydraulic clutch and e-start now to give it up, also need a headlight and tail in order to be legal in my area as well. I think yamaha has some work to swing more buyer their way.
I agree with your comment. I will say that I freaking LOVE this bike though.
That's the kind of terrain we ride in the foothills of Alberta Canada. Great video thanks!
Good stuff!
Kinda funny to hear you say that you prefer the taller first gear of the XC and such until you get eyeballs deep in the gnar!! W doesn't stand for wide, it's winning!! Looks like my kind of trail!
Playing with the gearing would help keep it in the sweet spot. It's too tall like it is for that terrain. I always liked to ride my YZ250 on tight single track just under the pipe, where with a little throttle or clutch, it would get on the pipe and go.
Yes, if I could drop the 1st gear down a bit, it would be ideal.
Sounds like you're running stock gearing on this X? Im running 13/51 on mine. Im sure this video serves no justice on the tight climbing that you're doing but it doesn't seem that i have to burn my clutch that much when I'm challenged with a slow technical climb. Love this bike though. Great job on your videos too.
you should watch cross training Enduro skills they are great riders
Frank Blaschek hey, i love their channel
I have seen a bunch of their stuff.
Now that's a kind of terrain I'm familiar with. I bet you missed the electric starter a lot more in this ride.
I just made sure not to let it die!
I bet he didn't miss that exrta weight.
Tomas Jakan Jakobsson the yz is 229 lbs with fuel, the 300xc is around 220 lbs without fuel, extra weight?
cadwarrior well fill the 300 or empty the YZ. then weigh. YZ holds 2 gallons and ktm 2.5 .
Love watching these videos!
coming from a guy with 300+ hrs on his yz250 I can certify that shifting down to 1st is tricky. My habit consists of stabbing the shifter down at least 3 times, especially coming up on a surprise climb.
Put a Rekluse on it, it makes a difference, it's almost like cheating, also a Steahly 13oz flywheel weight.
Put a flywheel weight on if you haven't and you'll notice a difference. My 2003 yz250 i got from a trade has one and it handles slow speed riding very well! I love your channel! You should do a video on a project bike when you get the chance. Keep up the awesome work!
I think I'll keep it stock since this is a bike I won't be able to keep long term. Overall, I LOVE the bike. I can only afford to keep one bike long term if I want to review other bikes, so I'm not going to spend a bunch of time placing all sorts of mods on it...
Makes sense for you to do that then, nothing wrong with a stock bike. The yz250x is my dream bike! You should do a harescramble and get go pro footage of it!
This type of single track is what I usually find myself on in Southeast, but it's usually more wet. I would love to know how you think the YZ250FX would have done with this type of riding? Would a 250FX offer any advantages (or disadvantages) over the 2-stroke 250X?
Having owned both the 4 stroke and the 2 stroke version of this bike in the past year, I can tell you that there isn't a situation under the sun in which I'd rather ride the 4 stroke version. This particular two stroke is simply amazing to me. The 2 stroke option is TWICE as fun to me and the YZ250FX. The YZ250FX is a good bike, but the YZ250X is amazing.
Damn that stuff is nuts..
I've never tried that style of riding. I can see why a four stroke would be challenging.
This was stock right? I am considering a 250X and am rewatching all your videos, would a bigger rear sprocket make this more single track worthy?
BRAAPPTORRR that’s what I was thinking too. Get a larger rear sprocket and a righteous stunt clutch so you can work it easier
Get a lectron for it! Just ordered one for my 250 x!
love to see you drop the gearing and hit the trail again, then add flywheel weight for a final compatison....tubliss on this one? tire choice?
TUbliss is on this bike. I'm not going to change anything on the bike because I love it just the way it is.
most of the guys I ride with have 300s, I have a 250xc, and one guy had a 200sx. Absolutely amazing what a difference 50cc will make on a two stroke.
Yes, yes it is.
So would a wide ratio gear box be better here?
Riding that bike and having to use more clutch control with the higher gear is just making you a better rider. Also some of that single track looked like single deer trails and times! lol.... Definetly got pretty tight a few times!
Yeah, they weren't much more than deer trails for sure.
You ever thought about putting a righteous stunt clutch on the 250x? It will make the pull easier by giving you more leverage on the clutch cable. You can one finger those things. I know one of your biggest complaints about the 250x is that the clutch isn’t hydraulic. Just a thought. I use one on my Yamaha.
Larger rear sprocket maybe? That might make this bike as capable as your ktm xcw 250
One thing ive noticed it takes alot of effort too boil over the yzx compared a 250/300 exc.
it's so much fun though...
Just our every Sunday trail ride in the Philippines. Don't have dessert or rocks, just mountains and lots of it.
how does the suspension feel in the tight single track? e-start definitely has it's advantage's but not a deal breaker for me.
It feelsamazing. I don't like this bike, I freaking love this bike overall.
I'm really aiming to buy the YZ250X this next year.
Robert Daniel do it. What a great bike!
To compensate for the high 1st gear, would it be good to change sprockets for more lower end grunt and power?
While that would help 1st gear, I think it would hurt the overall gearing, so I'm not going to do that.
No downside in my experience. 14/52 works great for me. Still lots of top end. Makes 4th more useable as well. We ride lots of steep gnarly stuff here in the rockies.
Im currently running on 15/51 on my 125 2stroke. Im planning to add more teeth on the rear sprocket to stiffen the gearing a little.
So, you have mentioned the gearing a couple of times in your videos. Do you plan on changing the gearing to see how much it might improve the performance on those types of trails?
I don't think I'll change it. That would hurt it in the wide open stuff and that is where this bike really shines.
Damn!! i REALLY want to head out to Utah to ride these trails or any single trail system out there in Utah!! in other words... kyle when we going riding? lol, we don't have stuff like this in the north east!!
You need to come to NJ and ride, what you call 'nasty single track' is a breather section in northern NJ! Lol
Guys often say things like that until they come ride with me :)
Nice video love that bike keep the videos coming 👍🏽 Hawaii has very technical stuff too
I'd love to ride there some day!
Dirt Bike Channel come on down aloha
Hey Kyle,
Just curious, are you running the same 90:1 Amsoil saber mix in the YZ that you run in your KTM.
Yes, I run the same gas in both 2 strokes.
Compared to the European 2’s, the Yammie definitely seems like it’d rather be screaming across the desert. I wish they’d take this platform and build a proper single track enduro bike.
Gnarly! Good video
If you don't like the gearing you should have got a yz250 and customized it for offroa. I dragged raced a 2006 yz250 vs 2018 yz250x and I smoked it by 2nd gear I was a bike ahead
Any yz450fx reviews? I know alot of people steer away from the 450s for trail riding. Do I need the power? Not always, but im happy when its there. Ive been looking at a few 300s but feel quite comfortable on my 06 yz450. Geared down it feels a bit short on the top end, electric start would be a plus on tech terrain. Thanks again!
Keep up the good work bro
Thanks Ranga.
it's so hard to tell how steep the hills really are. I kept looking at the angle the trees were to the ground. Looks funn. trail Needs to be clipped out in a few spots
Yes, a lot of this was very steep.
if Yamaha would adjust the gear ration, bigger fuel tank and put a starter on this bike, people might consider this over the KTM. I love my KTM 300xc but would really like to give this bike a try. thanks again
Yeah, I hear you. I freaking love this bike even without those things though.
So how does this bike compare to the ktm 250 xc or xcw? Im currently riding a 350 xcfw six days with a rekluse. I love the bike but had to rebuild top end at 40 hrs (Dirt infiltration they said) and thinking about a getting a two stroke.
What state are those trails in they look great
*drools* while watching this.
man you where in some crazy erzburg stuff! nice lol
And it handled it. It's better at this stuff than any of the 4 strokes I've ridden, but it's not as good at this as the KTM 300's in this stuff.
Hey kyle have u had or heard of any yzx gearbox failures.? I have. Seems this gear box is suspect?
if you already had a 4 stroke ktm 500, and want to add a 2 stroke in the garage, wich bike would you choose between the 300 xcw or this yz 250x??? considering its your first 2 stroke ever (only for trail use)... hard dilema... both looks awesome and fun...
For general trail riding, I'd steer you toward the 300 XCW. If you are used to the 500 4 stroke, the 300 2 stoke will be a more natural transition for as compared to this Yamaha YZ250X.
Dirt Bike Channel thanks!
I use to have a two stroke 85 then just bought a 2017 250fx yesterday what is your option between the fx and x 250
Nice video. Would be interesting to take same bike thru this trail but with a rekluse core 3.0.
REKLUSE is so gay its for pussys
Wow. Tell us how you really feel. Lame.
ktm trailrider lol an automatic clutch what r u a 4 year old you cant use a clutcgh. auto clutch is for pussys, no skill itakes the fun out of enduro
I'm not a huge fan of an auto clutch...
YOU NEED TO TAKE THE SHERCO ON THIS TRAIL, THE 300 4-STROKE.
Did you have to change jets and if so what size? Thanks
Any issues w/poison oak on those trails?
how do you feel about jd jet kits
90% rider and 10% bike , i have ridden heaps of places where 300s have not got , some really good riders aswell
100% agree with you.
Enduro North Nz Sooo your saying you're really really really good.....
I notice your YZ does the same as my 13' with the throttle control at low/mid through the rocky technical stuff. That jumpy throttle makes traction control difficult and even throws me off balance occasionally. Have you checked out the G2 throttle system? Might help make clutch work a little easier as well.
www.g2ergo.com/store/g2-throttle-cam-system/
im looking for a new dirt bike. im 15yearsold and and 5'8 would a 250 be too much coming from a honda xr100. please respond.thnk you
Oscar Martinez it might be a little tall honestly but power could be manageable for you as long as you respect the machine and what your doing. Go to a dealer and just sit on a few to see what feels like a good match and if you have to buy used just go based off of what seems like a good fit off of testing bikes at the dealer. In my opinion, coming from an xr100 I would look at a trail based 250 like a WR250F, crf250x, or any of the ktm 250 trail bikes. They will have plenty of power to satisfy for years to come. If you don't ride track, then don't get a track bike. The suspension alone will fight you everywhere you go. Hope that helps
Where is this at?
Anyone use a fan?
I have a zippy tank and no room to set it up for a puller.
I was going to cut my radiator brace and use a pusher.
Comments?
is yz125s pretty good compared to the yz250f in enduro
i rode a lot of tight stuff on yz125 2007. geared it way down to make up for the lack of torque and leaned out the jetting for my sea level southern ohio.super fun bike for shorter rides ie 45miles. when ridden at area dual sport events of 100mile plus with road sections, flat wore me down with keeping it on the power curve, intake and exhaust noise despite an fmf quiet silencer.....in the hills, the 125 takes a lot of concentration not to get caught out on suprise up hills.
So I took your advice and piped my bike with the Pro Circuit Platinum 2! Haven't been out on it yet but looking forward to this weekend.
I ride a 2016 YZ 250X and have a question I am hoping you can answer for me... Would it help to add a larger sprocket to get some more low end tractorability? And is changing the rear sprocket without changing the front advisable?
250x does not need a pipe , 13t front sprocket and 9oz fly wheel weight and its fine . i have heaps of videos in the hardest terrain we have and its perfect
Thank, I like the pipe. I will drop down to a 13 tooth sprocket and see how that goes.I believe it is a 14 T stock?
its a big misconception that things need to be changed in the exhaust department , the fly weight did not do much just allowes for a smoother idle not likley to rop off as sudden and slightly better way down low . and the 13t sprocket allows a bit less clutch slip , yes 14 is stock
I am ultimately looking for better low end tractability for hills. You're saying the flywheel didnt do this for you? I read everywhere that it makes a HUGE difference...
Think I am gonna go with an 11oz FWW, and leave the gearing as is...
52 tooth rear sprocket will solve the "grunt" issue. You won't miss the extra top end speed unless you ride @ 80mph everywhere..
It will hurt 2nd and 3rd gears though... I don't want do mess with those...
Dirt Bike Channel 2nd and 3rd will be your new favorite gears. Just try it. Your clutch and clutch hand will thank you.
JTH YZ250X im thinking of this for mine. Is it that much better than stock???
Andrew Puetz. It depends on where you ride. I'm in So. Utah, changing to 52t sprocket is great for the rocky steep technical trails around here. Although I did find that third gear is perfect for steep sand dunes. Changing to 52 tooth sprocket plays the bikes torque curve perfectly. Many 450's and other 2T's out climbed by the X.. This bike is not the fastest I've owned, but it will hold 3rd gear with 52t sprocket on the steepest dunes without bogging. 2nd gear is perfect for most technical trails, 1st gear is a stump puller.. I have rarely flamed out in 1st gear. The only caveat is loss of top end speed. 5th gear with stock sprocket was too tall and did not work well for me until I changed to 52t sprocket. Definitely worth trying.

Do you ever get poison oak or poison ivy
We don't really have much (if any) of that in Utah.
This bike is at the end of it's life cycle due to Euro 4 regulations. The long first gear is a motocross type of gearing, not enduro.
The Husqvarna/KTM TPI fuel injected two strokes are the state of the art. Super light hydraulic clutch, hydraulic Brembo brakes,
braided stainless lines, electric start, and you put the same fuel in your tank as the four strokes. This is the Blackberry phone of today. A good value, maybe, but not likely to be around for much longer.
do you think a crf150r is a good bike for enduro, i have one and i can lug that thing in 5th gear goin literally 5 mph up a hill with no stabbing of the clutch. it aslo is really nice for the tunable suspension and i have it on fairly soft. the bike is stock except for handgaurds and is the expert which is for bigger riders. can you recommend me to any parts that could help me on my journy to be as good as you are, im 12
Similarlobster8 flywheel weight
yes, in our club we already have 3 crf 150r's for enduro and hard single trail. Its very light plus the low seat height is a must for young riders.
Yes, you're good.
aden ligsanan thx
Similarlobster 8 i doubt that
England, have some sweet snotty trails ect here! very Technical
Awesome!
it doesn't seem very torquey down low in the rpm. is there anything you could do with getting more bottom end from it?
Craig Edwards it honestly has much more then it appears... I feel like he is a bit used to the 300's as well and doesn't want to rev it that extra bit to find the meat of the power and not stall it... but it does look to be some steep terrain as well. give my new 250x single track vid a watch :)
Off Road Use Only can't find the vid?
Craig Edwards You could try and find a heavier fly wheel
Craig Edwards it should be live on my channel. Just went up today, that could be the issue but that's odd
It's plenty touquey enough. The main issue on trails like this is that 1st gear is very tall.
throw a rekluse auto clutch on this bad boy!
I'm not a fan of them. I like knowing EXACTLY when my clutch is engaging and disengaging for technical riding....
sounds like 1st gear is way to high
Need lower gear and more torque.
Too bad they didn't make it a 300??
go up one tooth on the rear sproket
I think I'll keep it stock since this is a bike I won't be able to keep long term. Overall, I LOVE the bike. I can only afford to keep one bike long term if I want to review other bikes, so I'm not going to spend a bunch of time placing all sorts of mods on it...
First gear seems way to long thoo
Narly trail
no electric starter
wr is better for that terrain
2:20 Bye bye clutch!!
She's still running strong!
my yz250f would always hit neutral... hmm
It's a trend I'm seeing. Just going to have to stomp down on it.
Sick and tired of these YZ250x videos saying they do not have the low end grunt like most 2 stroke and then say the dumbest shit i ever heard. Not like a 300! Well no shit it is 50cc’s smaller. It the KTM Beta Gas Gas Husqvarna are so dam good stop comparing 300cc’s to 250’ccs. All the other have a 250’cc bike and it it crickets comparing them to a YZ250. I know why. Because the YZ will kill them.
Poor clutch
That kind of riding looks like torture to me.
The best kind of torture.
Thank you for this video. I no longer want this bike.... That poor clutch.
Just sounds so shit compared to the KTMs,,,
It's more fun than about any bike I've ever ridden. I LOVE this bike.
Awesome,, great to hear. Been very interested these. Aftermarket pipe maybe??? haha
yeah, I'll try a pipe on I eventually.
