Hey what's up everybody. Apparently the disk located on the back cover is a piezo speaker. Which appears to be broken on my watch and was causing the watch not to work at all. So basically what I did was bypass the speaker with metal foil tape to make the watch function again. Maybe in the future i will try to replace piezo the speaker.
I don't think the speaker is needed for the watch to run. The battery holder has a tiny tab angled upward, tuck that under the circuit board and then screw it on. My watch was able to run this way without the back on at all. Then when the back was replaced the speaker worked even though it looked dirty
Oh my goodness I have a star fox one of these, and I’m going to try this!!! Hopefully this trick will bring it back to life. Dude, you’re the real MVP, no joke.
Dude, you're a lifesaver, my mom recently found this exact watch in her closet and it's having that same contact issue from what i've tested. Now all I need is some foil tape to get it up and running properly again. Thanks a lot!
the correct battery is a 389 ALSO the battery watch should work without the back plate attached!! USE PROPER BATTERY 389, the tab should fold back under the pcb! that 44 you put in there is twice as thick and thus you cant put the tab under the pcb

OH man, I used to want one of these watches so bad. I instead settled for a TMNT watch I later unfortunately lost. Cheers to you. Big like and sub from me. Keep up the great content!
As always, awesome video. Btw, the disc is a piezzo buzzer witch is supposed to make sounds. It looks damaged, that could explain why you have no sound and had to mod it to power the watch. The piezzo is made of two or three parts : the big disc (that is contact to the back plate and the battery) and the little disc receiving the sound signal from the pcb (between the two disc, the piezzo material that vibrate when a current goes through). Maybe you have to replace the piezzo buzzer to have sound again. But i'm afraid the big disc part is soldered to the back plate :/
....or you could pile up a new piezo buzzer in top of your metal tape that is shorting the old piezo contacts. but maybe that sandwitch will be to thick to close the watch :/
Hi, I have the same Watch 2 different versions but managed to do the Sound diagnostic and found the Alarm sound which is the sound when Super Mario World appears on the Snes and the Star sound is the same sound as in on Super Mario Bros 3 Game Watch. I’m leaving this comment to you as I mentioned gentlemen which is you that did your repair and wanted to know if you have a way of enabling the alarm and the Star man feature that makes Mario Invincible. Thank you.
As mentioned install your battery properly and remove the foil. Then it will work like new. The battery plate is placed under the PCB My plate is as Dirty as yours dont worry about that.
Hi... You have the battery contact that holds the battery in place installed wrong.... At the side of it that doesn’t have the hole for the little screw... there is a little tab that’s bent up. Place that end just under the circuit board then press down and screw the other side to hold the battery. You have it sticking up so you r not make contact. Basically it isn’t installed properly. Take your tin foil off... and the pezio plate will have sound. Thank me later :)
To this day in 2023, I still can’t unlock all the characters/enemies on this watch. I’ve cycle through the maze 20 times straight without dying and get the cute little music after a 3 repeat win, but never the star, money, or sea urchins come up.
@@davidh8018 Thabks for such a quick reply- I was able to get mine working soon after I messaged you. I just unscrewed the metal piece with the 3 screws and cleaned down under it and it worked! I hope you can get yours to work. Thanks again brotha!

I remember when my brother got one of these. I was so jealous. It's cool to see it working again.

I think I remember those back in elementary.
I used to have one with Dr. Mario.
Cool
@@8-Bit_Flashback Thanks.
Dude thanks so much for posting this, my watch had the exact same issue and I'd been trying to fix it for years! Now it's alive again! :)

That round thing inside the back cover is the piezo speaker. You bypassed it with the foil tape which cut off sound.

Do you know what todo if you accidentally brake the battery contact?
Very cool find and you are very lucky its working, FW
Thanks, this worked for my Mario watch as well

You can find these on Ebay but... the prices are outrageous.

Thanks for the video, I got mine to work. One issue. How do I turn it off without taking the battery out?
Stays on unfortunately
@@8-Bit_Flashback I just realized it is a watch it is suppose to stay on to tell time lol. but thanks for the video!
Do you know how much these watches are going for? I have one and looking at selling it
A game and watch game 😃
the disc on back cover is a peizo speaker, thats why you have no sound when you covered it with tape
It's broken apparently as well. No sound regardless
@@8-Bit_Flashback try sanding it should be a brass in the centre probably badly corroded
😏Nice job dude🎮⌚🛠
Not enough gameplay...could you make a gameplay video?
Possibly.
@@8-Bit_Flashback - That would be pretty awesome...I never see enough gameplay videos/reviews for these rare, handheld game devices.
When repairing mine I noticed there is a super star sprite. Anyone know how to get it to appear?
