I would love to see a story on the Spirit of California. It was a brief 1980s Amtrak overnight train along the Coast Route from LA to Sacramento featuring Amfleet Coach/Diner and Heritage Sleeper/Baggage.

You keep saying that local governments are doing this or that wrong, but without those local governments there would simply not be any Capitol Corridor, Caltrain, or BART. These were all local initiatives demanded by voters and implemented by local governments. And all of this was happening while the rest of the country and the rest of the state were dismantling their rail networks.
Completely unwarranted criticism. The insane growth of passenger rail and rail transit in California is almost 100% due to those much maligned local governments doing what they could. California doesn't just have multiple top 10 intercity rail lines in the country and top 10 rail transit systems. It is not by accident that we now have arguably the best passenger rail network of any individual state! (if you don't count the Northeast as a single cluster)

I genuinely think Amtrak or at least ACE needs to use the old Mococo line as a line extension. Antioch to Tracy is roughly 27 miles apart but to get from Antioch to Tracy, you need to catch a San Joaquin to Stockton station on the BNSF, then get off and find a way to get to the Stockton station on the UP to catch ACE to tracy, which is just stupid and they weirdly aren't THAT close. Mococo line is sitting there dormant. On top of that, you could extend service south along the UP Fresno Sub, which would parallel the San Joaquin route on the BNSF Stockton sub but it would give accessibility to so many cities that don't see passenger service.

I'm pretty sure that this extension is already in the works.

We definitely need to connect Eastern Contra Costa County with Stockton!

voters rejected 2 of the later bonds in 92 and 94. that 2B extra could have done so much. There already is a plan for SJ to Sac via the altomont pass
Nevada and Arizona I believe has been fairly open to working with California on services

May I join your rants about having to pay for things? Yeah. It is kinda like that. The photo of the head end cars on the bi-level train at 3rd and Townsend is curious. From what I've seen, though, only streamlined equipment was used on the "Del Monte." Maybe the head end cars were deadheading? Speaking of "Del Monte" maybe you know the details of the story about why the train ran as long as it did. I've heard that there was the widow of a Grand High Exhalated Southern Pacific Suit who lived in Monterey and that the parlor car kept some special food aboard in case she should get the urge to go to the City to count her money or some such. I'm thinking it was some kind of breakfast food, but please don't quote me there. Also, we got bit by the Train Bug at about the same age. My mom took me by her dad twice when I was in the 2-4 year range on one of the "Chiefs" out to Gallup, N.M. It was NOT the "Super." That much I have been told. Looking forward to the interurban story! I really don't know much about them and know you'll enlighten us. Happy American Capitalist Lip Service to Labor Day, TH!

Notice the first picture has the trains with the Railway Express truck and baggage cars for other express YES COMMUTER TRAINS DID CARRY PACKAGES WHEN NEEDED. IT WAS A NATIONALWIDE SERVICE All railroads with commuter service did this. No studies , no delays just do it. Yes secondly trains not POSTED ABOUT. Again your following posts instead of books and very old Official Guildes. Commuter trains are low revenue short distance passengers, so they did get old cars. Amtrak had one train a day THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR. Which could be hours late! And a afternoon once a day train what commuter could use that, if it wasn't sold out from Reno? Back to your video, Yes, Local trains should go to on to Reno. But that is very hard to do with one state paying the bills, It's really can be against that states law! That is why we have a Federal Government! Maine PAYS FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE SERVICE ON THE DOWNEASTER! I believe it was the Bush administration. That told Maine not to stop the trains in NH! Except most of the ridership from Boston is out of NH! Indiana is a small part of the Michigan corridor if that is what you are talking about. This is why Missouri River Runner trains don't go to TOPEKA, KANSAS! KCY-TOP is a major short corridor in KANSAS. With no service except the Chief in the middle of the night once a day. I think California is doing a great job! Try living in dozens of other states with undeveloped corridor if you don't think so. The higher fares are to discourage ridership! It's complexed I know your guessing about why. Where did you get this 100 mile line thing? Equipment is NO issue if you offer long term leases to private investors. The way the railroads did!
