  • This one was pretty simple, it was given to a family member who uses it every now and then. Last time they tried to it wouldn't start, classic case of a dirty carb and dirty gas. I replaced the bearings in a seperate video. • Replacing Bearings in ...

I'm just trying to get my dad's edger going so I can surprise him with a sharp lawn when he gets home and I've fallen down the rabbit hole of mechanics channels. God I love RUclips. Subscribed

You got me beat. I bought my Craftsman Edger in 1993 with a Techumseh 3 hp. She's still running great. Several years back the starter rope broke and I tried to fix it, but sprung the spring. That's ok, I just chucked a socket in my drill to turn the flywheel nut. Now I have electric start. Should've busted it years ago.

My McLane edger made the same sound as the one in this video when I engaged the blade. It is caused because the two sealed wheel bearings that support the blade axle are worn out. I replaced mine with 2 purchased on Ebay for $6. Remove the blade, blade spindle, and knock out the bearings. Replace with new ones and that clatter sound is gone. The round sealed bearings become flat spotted over time and make that annoying clatter. You can lube the axle all you want but with bad bearings it won't help.

Already did a video on replacing the bearings

thanks for the instruction , mine sat for 2 years it refused to start. Beware, check those 2 (10mm) bolts that connect the neck to the engine, you can use flat head screw driver to tighten them. Mine was loose and it was hard to start (too lean with air leaks) even with throughout cleaning up like depicted above. Thanks.

I have a nice one with a Techumseh engine, for the life of me I can’t get the governor adjusted correctly. It’s a great machine though.

Nice work! Yeah, there's no saving that spindle. Maybe change the belt too. Kinda looked like the blade stopped for a minute there as you were edging the grass. . . Maybe it was just the camera angle.

I need to take it apart and see how bad it is. Probably the bearings themselves are done for

Can you tell me why my power mate edger shuts down when blade is engaged

I was given a McLane years ago by a guy throwing it away just because it needed one or two new tires!!
    So I scooped it up.
Then I heard that Power Trims were even better.
And I saw those green handles on a lot of landscaper trucks!
So I sold my McLane and bought a used Power Trim.
Right away I noticed the Power Trim liked to tip over all the time.
Power Trim simply does not have that saddle frame McLane has.
So I sold the Power Trim with no problem and bought another used McLane.
Had it ever since. I decided Power Trim was NOT the best of the small gas edgers....McLane is.
PS: I've never owned a new one. Old ones are too easy to fix up.

They’re ridiculous brand new. Great machines. Simple. Easy to work on. Probably between both brands they’re the best edgers you can get. I prefer the mclane as well though.

Is there a place to identify the older ones? Mine runs with gas down the carb but doesn't pick up the fuel.

I have the 127cc model and I have to put my hand over the carb to get it to start and if I allow only a bit of air to it , it throttles up and runs great but if I put the air filter back on it it wont start. Cant figure out why I have to restrict the airflow of this so much for it to work properly. Any ideas.?

you likely need to tune the carburetor there should be an adjustment screw on the side of it.

Those bearing sounds horrible, they need so much grease or even new bearing, that engine is suitable to make a generator with car alternator, greetings.
