    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Marcie (Candice Bergen) confronts Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) about his distance in their relationship.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Get ready for another dose of love and loss in this sequel to the four-handkerchief classic Love Story (1970). Oliver Barrett (Ryan O'Neal) is emotionally devastated after the death of his wife Jenny, and while he tries to lose himself in his work as a lawyer, the long hours don't ease his pain, especially when he finds that his leftist views conflict with those of the senior partners at the firm. Eventually, Oliver's inconsolable grief begins to alienate those around him, until he finds new love with Marcie Bonwit (Candice Bergen), the wealthy and beautiful heir to the Bonwit-Teller fortune. Despite his affection for Marcie, Oliver finds it difficult to leave the memory of Jenny behind, which causes major problems in his relationship with Marcie. Ray Milland reprises his role from the first film as Oliver's father; the supporting cast includes Charles M. Haid, Swoosie Kurtz, and Jose Torres.

Ryan O’Neil was perfect as Oliver in love story and this movie as well. I cannot imagine any other actor playing the part.

A great sequel: despite being filmed nine years after the original Love Story, with great continuity, plausibility and dynamism it seamlessly picks up & develops the character of Oliver Barrett, heart wrenchingly abruptly too soon widowed ...now intermittently flashbacking and poignantly haunted by memories of his past bride. Timely too for its depiction and discussions of domestic and international business and law. A highly underrated sequel and dramatic companion piece to the film Love Story.

Jenny took Oliver down to the grave with him. The Oliver here is dead and over. It ain't no replacement for Jenny. There will never be another Love Story.

Something might feel dead here b/c Oliver still is in this movie. I appreciate the emotional accuracy of this film

I thought so, too. That kind of yelling would be the end of any relationship with me. Maybe times were different back then? I'm surprised she stayed as calm as she did.

The problem is he never even tried overcoming his depression, he was happy to be just by himself with Jenny's memory. He went to a psychologist who recommended something short-term (physical exercise, sleep, regular schedule), but that wasn't enough in the long run. His friends and father-in-law didn't help him either: they just thought that pushing him in the arms of any woman would make him forget the pain and be happy again as if this was ever going to be easy. So he just carried on sweeping his problems under the carpet, pretending that he was fine until he got to this lamentable point. Moreover, he broke the promise that he made to Jenny on her death bed that he would continue to live and not mourn her indefinitely. The end of the movie is appropriate though: it could not have ended otherwise because, as Marcie said, he did literally zero to accept that Jenny was dead, so he was in a desperate situation and any pretence of happiness would simply have been implausible.

And plaudits to the acting--Ryan O'Neal especially shows, acts out, great emotional range and depth of grief, anger, and omnifarious shades of grey between. And Candice Bergen plausibly holds her own as her own unique character, steely and cooly (yet warmly), firmly maintaining her own identity and dignity, and striving to forge a romance with Olliver, apart from the ghost of her rival, his departed yet still anguishedly loved first wife. A fine, sensitive film.

I Sympathize with Oliver, there’s no fast forwarding grief…is what it is…Jenny will forever be apart of his life…the day will come when he can move forward…and yes something is dead, as morbid as it sounds, it sucks…nothing he can do about it at the moment…side moment those 2 have no chemistry whatsoever

Now I can see why Oliver's Story was widely panned compared to Love Story because they waited nine years to do the sequel! Bad move. I mean it even shows in the clothes they're all wearing. They should have done this two years later.

StoptheWars Spot in. Jenny’s sarcasm was grating, and she forced Oliver into a marriage proposal by threatening to move to Paris. Very cunning. Interesting that a man wrote the book and made her out to be the perfect woman.

@StoptheWars That's true, Jenny was very rude to Oliver in the Radcliffe Library scene, but it's later revealed that she only did it to get his attention, and was leading up to asking him out on a date. Then during the date, Oliver found that beneath her rough exterior was a caring, sensitive and cultured woman that he could love. I agree with you about the cursing though. I thought it was excessive. However I think a lot of times in movies the characters who curse the most are the ones that came from very lower working class backgrounds, and the rough language that they use is shown as an indicator of that. I was not happy about the way Oliver's Story ended, I was really hoping that he would remarry and find happiness, but I guess that was easier said than done.

@@lyinsroar9637 Yes, some men like women who are assertive. I think it's one of the things that Oliver admired about Jenny , that she was outspoken.
