- Is Wing Chun Useful In A Street Fight? Wing Chun is a concept-based martial art that originated in southern China. Like many traditional martial arts, specific details on its origins are unclear. Legend says it was created by a Shaolin Kung Fu master, Ng Mui. This martial art became widespread after a Wing Chun master, Ip Man, started to teach the style throughout mainland China and Hong Kong. And with both Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan being amongst the martial artists drawing on the concepts of Wing Chun in their practice, its popularity sees that it remains taught worldwide, to this day. So what exactly is Wing Chun and how would it stand up in a street fight? That’s exactly what we are going to look at in this video. Keep watching to find out.

I think if you want to learn wing chung. Then learn something else like muay thai better. There is a match I watched that wing chun fight against muay thai on the stage and knock out by muay thai fighter in 1 minute.
That's because martial arts don't work in fights as a whole. At this point in time your best bet is to learn a little boxing, wrestling and brazilian ju jitsu. Ju jitsu is the closest thing to having super powers. Thai has its place mixed in too for sure.

In order to be effective in any martial art, one valuable thing that needs to be known is: "The body will not go where the mind has never been".
I studied Wing Chun for 5 years... I'm mostly a wrestler, but this system is very compatible as going forward is the goal in wrestling also. My favorite thing about it was it's focus on jamming punching opponents by this constant forward pressure. A lot of street fighters like to throw haymakers and that is not a strong strategy against this style.
All bullshit. A Chinese MMA fighter beat the living hell out of "Wing Chun" masters in China a few years ago lol.

A Chinese friend of mine joined our Kyokushin dojo here in Tokyo. He had previous full contact karate experience as he had briefly joined a Shinkyokushin dojo, and he is a very good fighter. I once asked him if he had any experience with Chinese martial arts before coming to Japan, and he said “Wing Chun”. I was impressed, and hoped maybe he could pass on some cool tips. But he actually seemed embarrassed, and said “it’s interesting, but it’s not very practical or realistic. Full contact training is much better to build up both attack and defense techniques”.
Seems more of a criticism of non-full contact training than a criticism of Wing Chun itself.

@@tristramhurd7034 you don't "have" to but I like being well rounded and versatile. I do more than because I enjoy them for different reasons...
@@tristramhurd7034 Good luck with whatever you practice. If it suits you that's all that matters but there's nothing wrong with carrying a knife in addition to a gun in battle.
I started learning Wing Chun at 64 years old. The training was brutal: 100 fist push ups and 100 sit ups in the one hour session, in addition to learning and practicing punches and kicks. Our Sifu was awesome, he let us hit him in the ribs as heard as we could, and it had no effect. As he said, you have to condition your body, if you punch someone Wing Chun with unconditioned fists, you will break your knuckles. As in everything else, you have to put in the hours and years to be good. And two other points, a good big one will beat a good small one, and it rarely matters which style you have learned, if the other guy has learned longer!
I've studied various styles throughout my life. Started out street fighting so as I grew I already had a really understanding of fighting efficiently. Wing Chun has more effective uses than most styles but ultimately it's not gonna be any style that wins the fight or defends u against an attacker. In the end no matter what style you use, it's all going to fall on the practitioner.
I would literally have to write books to explain that to most, but those of you with experience will understand.

Yes thank you is the fighter, people say boxing and wrestling could beat, it can if the fighter ain’t there if you get it, and I feel like is effective cause its diffence, balance, and quickness too, if we look it at the movie too vs mike Tyson it shows the effectiveness of the defend etc, same with the boxing part too the part it’s the power and not everyone has power like that and also technique too that would help you counter etc, and wing chin has attacks that end fights fast, like hit to neck is lethal, eye would fuck up your opponent reaction and sight, and groins

I used these techniques against two opponents who ambushed me. Two broken noses later, they determined my pretending to misunderstand them was covering an ability to have 100 percent accuracy landing only counter punches. First punch was a right hook. I placed my elbow inside his elbow and aligned the fist to his nose. His own punch force used my hand to break his nose. Second punch was a right cross. I deflected wrist to wrist as he fully extended his punch, stepped, facing him, diagonally forward until my head was just outside his right elbow range, and palmed his right eardrum. Third punch, another right cross. Same wrist block, this time behind his right elbow. Stepped forward but less diagonal, pushing him to over twist the punch. Palm strike to ear with push sent him back about ten feet from broken balance. Fourth strike, straight right. Countered with strait left that again elbow blocked incoming force into smearing his nose again. Having had time for pain to overcome anger, we hugged and he called the police on me.
Second opponent, first punch was right hook. Broke his nose with faster strait left counter punch. This attack was between the first and second punch of the first opponent. Second opponent second punch was also a right hook. Eardrum damage from palm counter strike. Third strike was counter palm strike exactly the same as second. He wised up after three tries, likely in part to his smaller stature and realizing that the first, larger opponent than me, was too injured to want to continue. He stopped trying to throw my bike off the bridge and ran away before police arrived. Police let me go after realizing that compassion kept my opponent's heads from bouncing off the pavement.
Well there's 8 minutes of my life I can't get back!

Yep! Or pull the strap out! Lol
It always helps when your "opponent" is cooperating with you ... as in sparring at the dojo. Real world, people tend to do the "wrong" things for your techniques to work - although the balance, speed, focus, and movement picked up from martial arts training will all be useful ... along with knowing how to fall.
My instructor told us the same thing. And he was the grand master of Isshinryu karate
@@davidwoody5228 my instructor at martial arts at my military service said it this way:"if you happen to meet an opponent, forget 2 things, rules and honor.... This guy gives a shit on it, but remember one thing:" never ever start a fight, but always end it"
Well, this was a military view of things, but still he said what all the masters say. It's not to start a thing.
Well, one thing he also said is, first round always is mental, if you win, the attacker rethink and don't even attack.
Once I was stopped by 3 bullies, searching for a victim.
Basically I stood where like bored to death, even slightly put my hands into my jacket and just said, very silently and calm to the leader:"you are not here for trouble and I am not here for trouble to." when I placed one finger, only one, next to his shoulder and directed him to the side, so I could left the circle around me.
One minute later I entered a train that just arrived and another guy who was there entered behind me and showed me his ID, he was a police officer out of duty, he just said:"I would have helped you, but you did not need it, my respect."
This is "winning the first round"
They tried to provoke and intimidate to cause fear. I just denied them success, so they was irritated and I topped it by commanding their leader to the side like pulling an insect away.
They searched for a victim, I did the exact opposite. So yeah, he was not in for that kind of trouble.

Growing up in my youth, I was small in size and oftentimes, bullied. Eventually, as I became more and more worn-down with all the bulling on me, i decided to learn to give it back to those who bullied me. I learned a mixed technique of martial arts styles i.e. boxing, wrestling, karate, judo, ju-jitsu and Kung Fu. I became very, proficient in "giving it back (with interest)" to my aggressors. I never lost a fight to this day, thereafter. I do not aggress nor bully others but will return my "two cents" worth if provoked. I do however, stick-up for those who are weaker and can't defend themselves.

You think of yourself like some stupid anime character lol
It’s good to get variety and stay with one style while sparing with others with another style to get you used to other styles. You got more confidence the better YOU got and didn’t need to bully. Martial arts teach you to be vicious but also humble. Confident people usually aren’t bullied. Arrogant spoiled or a abused people often are. The younger you can start the better.

I've been fighting my entire life. I"m 71 now. I used to spar with a Wing Chun instructor. Honestly it was as challenging as any other black belt level fighter. No advantage at all. Chi Sao type of stuff just did not work with my fast jabs and other strikes. I can't even kick any more due to injuries, and he could. He tried to stay far away so the kicks would have max power. I would just crowd him and it was hard for him to get his kicks off. The arm defense was as with other fighters. Theoretically I love the Wooden Dummy. I still use Chi Sao for sensitivity training, but good ol' boxing and fitness do the job in the ring.

@@ZaddyZavid I hear you. It works for me as I travel a lot & this gives me a portable way to workout. I'm not home enough to attend anyone's classes & as a newby, it's been helpful in addition to the forms.
@@dchatman757 the rings will tense yr shoulder and arms when yr shoulder and arm should be relaxed and loose. Ive been to 2 wc schools now and neither use rings, my own sifu has sed those rings are not for wing chun and are detrimental. I dig it. I'm a black belt in Shotokan and in Yoshukai karate. Always been interested in Kung Fu.
Never heard an MMA fight begin with, 'and in the corner, Wing Chun practitioner...'
It helped me out a lot when I was attacked unexpectedly a few years ago. People often try to compare Wing Chun with a MMA fighter. Of course MMA is going to be more effective overall because it contains aspects of all martial arts. So no individual, singular martial art can hang with MMA, which is an integration of the best of all other martial arts into a truly comprehensive and continually expanding form of combat.
I have a blackbelt in street fighting.
Maybe yes maybe not
Isn't Wing Chun banned in MMA because of the lethality of it's techniques?
@Juan manuel Pilo Laugh all you want, but attacks to the eyes throat & groin are an MMA no no.
@@swampy6194 only those certain moves are banned
I have practiced WC since the late Seventies. And found it to be very useful in street fights.
But after studying Muay Thai, I’m convinced that the inclusion of the knees and elbows create a complete street fighting style.
Plus the boxing style of MT can I throw an opponent off guard on the streets.
So I use a combination of WC, MT, and Peek a boo boxing.
But, with grappling gaining popularity, I plan on adding BJJ to complete my training.
I’m 69 so I have to end a fight well within 2-3 minutes or else I’m toast! Hahahahaha
Good strategy wise sage!
That is awesome!!!
Yes. Today need to mix.
Wing Chun does use elbow strikes though. Not 100% sure on knees but I'm pretty dang sure they're used as well.
I'm no fighter but so far it seems like Wing Chun seems like a favorable martial art in the self-defense context because of the speed. Other martial arts like muay thai and boxing may have more powerful strike techniques, but you don't need super powerful strikes in a real fight because weakspots like groin, neck, eyes, etc exist. Thus, it's all about who can actually land their strikes first. Wing Chun just seems like a pretty practical package on paper: it's fast, utilizes basically all striking tools, focuses on applying pressure as well as defense, and incorporates practical weak spots.
Did Wing Chun for 7 years and elbow strikes were definitely in the mix they are my favorite strike because when done right you can barely feel the blow its like hitting a feather.
Everybody wing chun tonigh, everybody wing chun.😂😂😂
Yes I definitely would.these are dangerous times we live in...
Absolutely true!
I thought the video was going to show a. street fight between a wing-chun master and a bully. A bit let down tbh.
Really no way to street fight, five family style will cripple or kill.

@Anthony - of the systems I trained in, Chinese Kempo Kung Fu was my favorite overall and would hands down be the most effective in a street fight. The school was firmly rooted in history and tradition of the system and had the highest level of discipline as well which is a lot of what I liked.

What movie is that and who is that kung fu star? The movie you used the most clips of.
Practice all martial arts and stop worrying about what’s best. Enjoy the art. Even if you get your ass kicked, you’ll look good doing it!
Or just carry a good firearm and become proficient with it .. a good firearm will beat any martial arts any time.
That's the same thing Bruce Lee did you can't limit yourself...

There was a big bully at my HS, he used to pick on me all the time and beat me up, so I got tired of it and went to take wing chung classes, I trained for almost 5 months 3 hour a day,
When the bully came back and start trouble with me, I challenged him without fear and 15 minutes later, I was on the floor In KO , he beat the shit out of me again!!

You didn't get it. I'm proud of you for your excellent ESL skills, but you missed it this time.
This was supposed to show how it would stand up against common fighters on the street, and all we got to see here are scenes from movies. I would put my money on the Street Fighter if they know how to fight well over any wing chun fighter.
I haven't seen a Wing Chun master compete well in any of the MMA style matches. That, however, is not to say Wing Chun is ineffective. The truth is that Wing Chun was basically designed for closeup defense with lighting fast surprise counter-attacks where the eyes, throat, groan, ear drums are all fair games. All these are NOT allowed in any of the arenas.
“Originated in southern China” proceeds to show the Great Wall of China 😂😂😂😂
Undeniable proof that Wing Chun works in the movies.
A couple of extremely strong Russian MMA fighters actually practice Wushu (Chinese Kung Fu). Watch their hand movements very carefully. Shamil Musaev for instance has been using a lot of Bon Sau (shoulder hand) together with his backing up footwork to block his opponent's left-right hook combos. This is Wing Chun.
Most of the moves were tricks, cheating, put me off.
Everybody have fun tonight/Everybody wing chun tonight. 🤪
I don't know much about Wing Chun. But I DO know how to Wang Chung. Used to Wang Chung all the time back in the eighties. We'd Wang Chung at night, and everyone would have fun that night.
All martial arts is useful when applied properly. I practice taekwondo mma, and I have learned to never sleep on anything and anyone.
Even the weaker fighting styles can help in other ways like being calm and just surviving an attack.
Just curious how many confrontations have you had out of gym.

Very rare to see a person very proficient in Wing Chun...but they exist...and they are definitely very good...
And they rarely fight back - they tend to just pretend they can't fight...unless pushed too far.
Same thing with Filipino martial arts - they avoid fighting as much as possible. But they train as hard as they can...
Was looking forward to see an actual fight but it is to be expected. No one proficient in Wing Chun will be going around fighting bullies.
They will be fighting people with great fighting skills. That's how they get better and better at fighting.
I love how this dude has no idea what wing chun really is but delivers a very efficient message.

It's exactly damn near precisely proper WC. Can you guess which WC "expert"?
He gave 2 different histories of WC, and neither is what I learned.
As a wing chun master once said, its “house wife Kung fu”.

If it still beats ass what does it matter. I think it takes more focus knowledge and restraint.

Probably one of the best Martial Arts a beginner should learn before you moves on to others. The point A to point B attacks, defense and counter attacking and learning how to feel your opponents when they attack really helps allot. Also teaches you how to punch faster through technique. Having those as a foundation early helps in the long run when you move on to other martial arts weather they are Japanese or Tai or others. Great Martial art foundation for mixing different martial arts. This was Bruce Lee's foundation and he used allot of Wing Chun in his fighting style from philosophy ,Technique, and training.
Learned it along time ago in my early 20's only got to the second form though wish I would have finished it. Only 4 years of training at the most. Takes about 8 years to get through all 3 forms, and to be able to teach it to other students.
Where did you learn it from? I'm in my early twenties and would like to learn from your regrets.
@@MrGrey64 Arizon has a really good school. Tucson would be the best city to learn it in. The Dojo there is a direct line from Yip man himself. The teacher is Augastin Fong who you can look up. His first in line student teaches now since Sifu Fong is pretty old. I learned in Phoenix in my younger years. Didn’t live in Tucson till i was at the end of my time in the Air Force.
Bruce Lee studied many forms of fighting. By incorporating several aspects from these forms. He was able to develop a style that allowed him to be extremely versatile and a formidable foe in each circumstance presented him.
@Ole Carlos Certainly you must be a troll. Bruce Lee died in the late 70s. smh

I love using Wing Chun mix in my martial arts. It was the first art I was student of at age 7. Just recently I used it sparing a Neighbor that was trained in combat self defense. He was surprised how quickly I was able to stop and control everything he sent to me. He said I wouldn't be able to do it so I did it with one hand then I showed him the power of Wing Chun by taking him down in a matter of seconds.
awesome but the next equally best is ChoyLiFat Shaolin & Mui Thai, these are top styles in fighting. Choy Li Fat is Shaolin classic.
Modesty outstanding
Why mention the fact...Bruce never did..respect....but humility ok..live long grasshopper 😉
I attended IP MAN school of Wing Chung in Phoenix, AZ. The second at the time was located in Los Angeles, CA. The Shaolin Monks would visit our school once a year to verify the quality of the training. Once I reached 6 months in training I became self aware that the new me would destroy the old me quickly! (and I had been a street fighter all of my life, albeit a brawler, but used over-committed strikes to the torso to buckle my opponent since I was light weight) This art is like chess for physical combat, with all possibilities already weighed and counter moves already practiced. A REAL combat style for the street; crippling your enemies, controlling the distance of combat, and in some instances, manipulating your opponent into attacks they perceive to be open/vulnerable just to fall into your trap and get destroyed!
LOVE IT!
And then you woke up

From that I've seen (and in 68 years I've seen a lot), Wing Chun is effective against a weaker less determined & experienced foe. However a larger stronger enraged attacker, especially one who has any grapelling skill, will cut right through Wing Chun defenses. A "street" fight usually involves one or more people who are accustomed to getting in brawls. If the Wing Chun practitioner has only practiced in the Dojo & may have taken part in controlled competitions, they have no idea how powerful an angry halfback pumped full of adrenaline & testosterone can be. By the time he finds out, it's too late to hook, trap, block, kick or punch. And if you're lucky enough to hit the attacker in a sensitive place, it'll probably just piss him off even further. Wing Chun makes good movies. Who doesn't like IP Man?
A lot of people underestimate the effectiveness of martial arts. There was news story when I was a news where agroup of 4 men attempted to rob a gas station. When the story broke, it was assumed by everyone at the dojo that it was the younger Sensei who taught the teenagers and young adults but it was the old Sensei who owned the gas station who taught the young children. Aikido is the most maligned of all the Asian martial arts. But he prevailed and more then likely broke a couple of fingers of his attackers. The attackers all ran away after getting their asses kicked by the old.
