You see i was a massive fucking idiot with my original xbox, my drive had exactly the opposite problem, it wouldn't stop opening. So i decided to HOLD DOWN the actual disc tray, jamming it into the console when you could hear the internal mechanism screaming. Now it won't open at all and i'm here to see how you take apart the drive, so i don't have to blow serious money on something equally as likely to now work. Nice set up BTW, your room's pretty baller.

you may have ground down the gears (very bad), or snapped the pin which holds the gear into place (not as bad). if the pin is snapped you can just glue it down again. this pin holds the gear into place, and if its broken due to large stress, then the gear wont catch properly and it will wobble about. it will prevent the disctray opening without ejecting it manually.

@@AB-sr9mc Thanks for that info! That must be what's going on w mine (the broken pin). My disc tray wobbles quite a bit and is a struggle getting it opened or closed and locked. I vaguely remember finding a small plastic piece broken off when I disassembled it for the first time and prob threw it away lol.
I was thinking maybe the plastic gears, laser rails, and sides of the disc tray may need to be greased.

There is an easy way to get these drives open without opening up the xbox. Although, It does not work on every drive type(It does work well with Samsung drives). There is a tiny hole to the left of the eject button. If you straighten out a paperclip and push it in there when you press the eject button it will open.

This is just an idea, but maybe the reason why it gave dirty disk after you cleaned the lens, was because the lens / lens cradle wasn't in the original or expected position. Then after ejecting and trying again it was calibrated and ready for a game.

I had a non-working DVD lens that I eventually fixed by using more pressure with qtip and alcohol on the lens than I thought was needed.
Also my tray has issues opening UNLESS it has a DVD/CD inside and it opens perfectly. I leave a blank CD inside it when not in use now. (Replacing drive band soon).
I don't know if this will help anyone but it's worth a shot.

I have an Original Xbox disc drive where the laser is fine for reading, but appears to not be able to move freely. Any idea of usual fixes for that?
I used a magnet from a spare disc drive to be able to see what what going on when I put a disc in, to make sure the disc was spinning properly
I used this tutorial last year to replace the old disc drive for this particular console as it was giving the dirty disc error. The replacement was working fine when I was using it around December 2019, but sometime between then and now (July 2020) the laser must've got a bit stuck or something.

Make sure the two side rails are clean, then lube them. Also there is the threaded shaft that comes out of the motor only visible from the underside on a samsung, it spins and moves the laser assy back and forth. Make sure it is also clean and lubed. You should be able to move it back and forth quite easily
