I hate Henderson police. 2 years ago my father shot and killed my stepmother and then killed himself. His neighbor called the police a day or two after they think he did it for a welfare check because my father had left his trashcan out at the street and the neighbor also didn’t see them take their daily walk. The police came out and knocked at the front and back door but because they heard his dog barking they claimed my father must have been fine. It took 8 days….EIGHT days before they would bust in the house to find my father and stepmother’s bodies. Their dog was clinging to life because of lack of food and water. I am BEYOND haunted by this…..it makes me sick to my stomach to think of how long they laid there 😞
I had little contact with my father and his neighbor didn’t know how to contact me so I knew nothing about it until a couple of weeks later. While I am not blaming Henderson police for their deaths I am blaming them for being lazy and not going in because of a dog barking….it makes no sense. 😢

One mom had a son who was big for his age that totally trashed her home and spread feces everywhere daily. She couldn't take it anymore. I have a hard time judging as I'm not in their position. Autism runs through my family and I'm high functioning.

The reason the authorities settled with the parents is because the parents weren't physically abusive and violent, rather the parents tried to handle the situation themselves when they clearly needed professional help. I mean, these parents actually PAID to have a special room built to keep their child in. Was it a terrible and inhumane room? Yes, but at least they tried to do SOMETHING to keep the kid safe. The fact that they did something shows that at least they care about the safety of their kids. Also, putting these extremely high-need children into the system would have likely been far too taxing on the system that may not have the resources to help them. When these parents are willing to live with the children and at least try to care for them, removing the children into foster care (so the parents can spend a few years in prison for abuse and neglect) doesn't make sense. I can't imagine the damage that might be done to these kids if they were all split up and put into foster care.

I think if the enclosure was made of some other materials and not metal bars, it wouldn't have been such a problem. I think the cops got freaked out because it looked so much like a jail cell. If the whole thing was styled differently, I doubt it would be such a big deal. I hope the parents get some support and that a social worker checks on the kids regularly.

I think it’s fair that they are serving probation rather than jail time. It honestly seems like they weighed out their options and assumed this would be the solution. People can’t understand what they don’t experience. To have 2 children that are both autistic and violent seems very difficult. It’s not like they were found chained and beat up. The parents are just trying to contain them from causing harm to themselves. Hopefully they can get some help on finding other solutions to this issue.

while I don't agree that these parents should have gotten away with a slap on their wrists, it is very easy to say they should have sought out services. Easier said than done. There have been many instances where parents sought professional help and ran into roadblocks of red tape or simply nothing available to help them. I am curious what kinds of assistance, if any they would have been entitled to. I am also wondering what the present situation is for these two children. My son’s behaviors are extremely challenging and he struggles with aggression. He is 6 years old, but comes up to my chest and is a scrapper. It IS hard. You do feel desperate sometimes.
But you don’t lock your child in a cage. You don’t leave them in soiled diapers and with feces all over their rooms.
On top of dealing with my son’s behaviors, I work at an autism center. This mistreatment is more common than people think, and it is heartbreaking. Kids with high support needs deserve just as much love, respect, and care as a neurotypical “angel child” who never poses any behavioral challenges.
The fact that they weren’t participating in ANY services tells me much of what I need to know … Ignorance is bliss, but willful ignorance is neglect. They deserve much more than a year of probation.

Had a client once who ripped up anything put in her room. With permission from state workers, we eventually took out everything until there was nothing but a mattress, which we had to remove every morning because she would rip it up. Then she ripped up the carpeting and the pipe from the toilet. She was not locked in her room though, and there was always someone with her. But it's a full-time job. … which is why they should have accepted the resources they’d been offered. 🤷‍♀️ Lots of ABA centers will take kids 40 hours a week. If this child was in school, he’d likely be able to be bussed straight to ABA therapy right after school and have his parents get him a few hours later. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s true, and it is a necessity for some people.
Their shame isn’t in the fact that they were struggling with these behaviors, but in the fact that they chose to pay for fencing inside of their home rather than therapy or respite care.

Not saying this isn’t horrible, but most people wouldn’t last an hour with 2 large autistic kids. The family could probably be trained to care for the younger of the two, but unfortunately the bigger and stronger one being kept behind bars is too difficult to care for in a regular home. This poor child needs to be placed in a special facility that has a proper set up. This child could be taught a routine and have very close supervision by a group of counselors and caregivers. I’m not going to be too judgmental. These are not mean parents. These are helpless and hopeless parents pushed to the brink.

Try dealing with severe Autism. Knew of a mother of an autistic child, she got into trouble for fixing a bed ia a closet where he slept. Otherwise he would be up at night turning on the gas stove etc putting the whole families in danger. Finally after he started a fire in their home social services got him into a placement where is watched around the clock. Some autistic children are very bright. Others behavior is that of a hyper toddler that has to be watched every minute. Don't judge those parents, they are doing the best they can. In my state there is a school program to help young autistic children. They can go only 3 months of the year.

I rented a townhome one time that the leasing agent showed it to me before being cleaned and fixed up for the next tenant. She warned me about what I was about to see, but I told her I didn't mind. I walk in and all I mean ALL the drywall around every single window had been chewed off and there was feces smeared all over the window glass. Upstairs, one of the bedrooms had a lock on the outside of the door, and when we went inside, feces all over the walls too. The couple that lived there had a son that was severely non functioning autistic.

The family needed support from a childrens disability team. Occupational health would provide safe space specialist rooms that can keep the children secure and safe when needed, a fire officer then visits to check if all is ok....specialist clothing is available to prevent the children accessing their nappies to smear faeces. the issues in this post are actually issues families with autistic children struggle with on a daily basis. SEND school should be supporting the family too. A psychologist would support with behaviour strategies

I honestly think if the enclosure was made of some other material and styled differently, this wouldn't have been such a problem. I think the cops got freaked out because there were metal bars that made it look like a jail cell to them. The parents need some support and I hope they get it. Services are available for children on the autism spectrum. Parents can apply for a Medicaid waiver and combine it with private insurance. Although this can be costly, it provides essential support for the child and allows parents the opportunity for respite. The little boy has been in poor situation for many years, and his parents have hindered his progress by not allowing him to receive help, therapy, and attend school.

I don't want to judge these people, because I have absolutely no idea how I would cope. Would it mean having to put him in a care facility? Are there 'homes' in the US that people can afford? Where does he live when he becomes an adult? I feel compassion for anyone being in such a stressful situation.

I've gotta say some disclaimers first. All child abuse is bad, I believe this is child abuse. However, when you compare this to other child abuse cases I have heard about, this isn't that bad. I would consider this at an early intervention stage where the parents could get help and turn things around. Other cases I have heard about where a parent thinks their child is some kind of demon and starts abusing the child. I don't think there is any helping that parent. This, however, I think could lead to an eventual positive outlook if the parents start doing what they should have actually been doing all along.
