- This demo has been recorded about 1996 when William Orbit was working with Christine Leach, however, the story starts in the mid-70's. The duet called Curtiss Muldoon (Dave Curtiss & Clive Maldoon) recorded their song called Sepheryn.
Christine Leach - Muldoon's niece - used her uncle song during the recording with William Orbit and changed some lyrics but he didnt know about it and presented the demo (as one of few he recorded but never released before) to Madonna and she decided to rework it a little and record her version.
When the song hit radio stations in the spring of 1998, Curtiss heard it for the first time and was totally suprised. He was initially upset, but liked what Madonna had done with his song. The matter was settled out of court, giving the artist 15% of the copyright payments and crediting Madonna, Orbit, Clive Muldoon, Dave Curtiss and Christine Leach as co-writers.

This may be largely a cover but holy hell did Madonna's version improve it like a million times.

The guitar ending should have been on the record. I don't know the story behind this song, sounds very close to the final cut.
This is the version Orbit and Christine Leach worked on together base on an old song called Sepheryn by English folk music duo Curtiss Maldoon, consisting of Dave Curtiss and Clive Maldoon. Christine Leach is actually Maldoon's niece. When Orbit started working with Madonna, she liked the track, wrote an extra bunch of lyrics (e.g. the second verse) and put it on her album. Her version originally had the same ending that was then cut for the final release, probably on request of the record company.
It’s just not a good song, no matter who sings it. I know most people love it, but it’s easily one of my least favorite M singles.
