I second this. We had a 14year old, much loved, labrador called Monty. At 14 he had to be finally put down in the middle of lockdown in May 2020. Our lovely vet came out to the car and he and I did it together in the boot of the estate car. The vet was as distressed as I was, he loved Monty, and he sent me a letter of condoleance afterwards. All I can say is the dog tells you when it is time. Keep doing what you are doing you have, as always, his best interests at heart.

I too know what it's like to have an aging dog. It was hard realizing the 7 mile walks need to shrink to 3 miles then to a quick .5 walk down to a ride around the 7 mile walk zone. Deep sleep is scary cause it's so hard to wake them up. My girl was 15 1/2, She was weak on her back-end So I had to help her up the stairs by lifting her hips with a sling. So happy that Sherpa is enjoying his days the way he wants. Everything you are doing in my book is right. Love your video's 🥰🥰
I’m going through this transition too. My girl just turned 16 which is old for a lab. Her arthritis is starting to get in her way. She struggles to walk, has hearing and vision issues, no longer plays with her toys but she loves food, loves her people and being in the yard. All we can do is give them the best until we know it’s time… ❤

Me too. My 16 yr old cocker is declining, and her Dementia is getting worse, but she's still eating and walking, so until they stop, we keep moving on everyday.

It is pricey but Deramax gave my dogs several extra good years so he made it to over 21 with his arthritis. My vet takes back the unused meds and gives them for free to people that need them so that is worth asking about as an option. I ended up donating hundreds of dollars of meds when my two dogs passed.

Me too. My 15 year old Maltipoo Leo has arthritis and cataracts. The hardest part is when he isn’t eating well. He still loves his cousins (sister’s dogs), his walks (just not as long), and lots of cuddles. I’m just trying to give him lots of extra love and a great end of life time before living becomes harder than letting go for him.
Its hard to see our fur babies get old but, ive never seen a dog so loved as much as Sherpa ❤

Anticipatory grief is something we all go through, but you are doing the right thing in giving Sherpa everything he needs, which is love, healthy food, medicines, and his garden.
I started grieving when my missy began declining over several months and then I cried when she passed at the vets. She she a little over 13 1/2 yrs old. The best most loyal girl I’ve had. I miss her. And my senior cat passed a month before due to cancer so fading on her face. Talk about hard. She was such a beautiful smart pure white cat. And my little one passed a year later of old age. I had to take each of the 3 to the vet to pass peacefully. I have 4 girl dogs. 3 are 3 yrs old and the other is 5. 3 medium and a small. I still miss my other pets

Sherpie is doing well for his age, 13 is old for a large breed. He's still living his best life it's just very stressful when they get older. You don't know from one day to the next what is going to crop up. Sherpa forever ❤❤❤

Most of us know what it's like to have an elderly dog. You do have to make adjustments, which you happily do because you love your pup. The changes are inevitable and sad, but you do the best you can to hold on while they still are living well. You'll give Sherpa the best life possible, as always.
No one could care more for Sherpa than you Jamie. I don't have any animals anymore, but you do love them and they are part of your family. Don't ever apologise Jamie, you and Sherpa are just fine as you are. Lots of love to you both xx
I said it before Jamie. Love him for every second of every day. Learn together how to navigate a different life. I lost my beautiful girl 2 months before her 18th birthday. She had dementia, was deaf and almost blind, but she still loved going to the park.

Jamie, cherish EVERY MINUTE of Sherpa’s old age. Every one is precious, and the venerable elderly animal is a blessed companion. Quality of life is whereit’s at. Lotsa love from Seattle, where the venerable Mr Mann manx cat just crossed the rainbow bridge at age 18. We were so lucky to see him through.
So sorry for your loss. I just lost my 13 yr. Old Husky 1 mo. Ago. I miss her every day. We will meet again I know. When I'm ready I'll get an older dog from the rescue so they can spend their remaining time outside of a cage.
Nothing to apologise for Jamie, it happens to all pets in in the end and those who care know this. The sad days and happy days go hand in hand. Life is not full of happy days unfortunately. That is so heartbreaking. A few years back I lost 5 pets all shorty after each other, that's the problem I had because I got most of them the same time and they all grew old together and mourned for each other. I'm now watching my two greyhounds getting old, Rosie will be 12 soon and she's having a few problems. My two horses are both 28 and now have special need treatment. I love my old animals so much. We took our cat Oscar to the vet in the spring, cried all the way there, but he was 16; his sister just had her birthday, but she (like her brother was) is very senior.
She eats well, but as the vet says, every day with her now is a gift.

The garden looks quite spacious so I imagine he will at least get exercise from patrolling around the garden from time to time on top of the shorter walks.

Jamie, you have given, and still give Sherpa an amazing life, even if it is more and more at home, in his garden. You need to realize that Sherpa LOVES HIS GARDEN, and he is very content there. And when you two come back from Nephew Nook’s home, or K’eys home, to see how excited Sherpa to come back HOME, and is so happy to see his garden, when his ears go up, and jumps and runs a little, when he touches the grass.❤😊

I was gifted a 6 yr old ACD in 2012. I had a 2 mile every morning running partner for 10 years. Yes it was me that had to adapt. It felt wrong running by myself, then going for short dog walk after. Which turned into shorter and shorter walks. Now it is just me and my running. Big hugs to Sherpa from San Diego, California, USA.
Don't be hard on yourself. You're the best dog dad, and please don't feel that you have to put out more cheerful videos...watching our beloved pets get older and slow down is hard. I have enjoyed your videos for a good few years now and will continue to, even if the adventures are only as far as Sherpa's garden! It hurts me, saddens me deeply to see Sherpa's health in fragile state. Sherpa is an angel on this Earth, and the thought of his mortality makes me very sad. I only can imagine how Jaime feels, Sherpa is like a son for him, his companion, his everything. Sherpa had had a wonderful life provided by his dad, a life full of adventure, love, great joy. Jamie, I just recently got super lucky and got a job working at a cat holiday hotel, here in Norway. I get to spend a few hours a day with some wonderful cats that come to stay and enjoy the amenities. They are all so different and I love them all. Some make more of an impression than others. I get to look after them as if they were my babies and I just love it. We do have to adapt to being temporary caretakers of these beautiful souls.
You are a great dog Dad Jamie, everything you do is for Sherpa's comfort and it's wonderful to see an owner so very committed to doing everything possible to help Sherpa's day to day life. Hugs from Canada!

It’s so hard to watch our fur babies becoming older. My rescue red fox lab Honey was almost 14 when she passed. But her last year and a half was hard for both of us. She still got excited to go out , but managed only about 20 minutes and she slowed right down. Sending love to Sherpa and Jamie. Stay strong!.

I love older pets . Seeing them grow and change through the years means so much to me. I have been a subscriber for three months. I think Sherpa is absolutely gorgeous. I would love to take care of him in his senior years . Senior pets need more cognitive stimulation; lots of hugs and interaction with family. My 13.5 year old has had surgeries; has a slight limp and is very sassy. Love and cherish every moment together. ❤❤❤❤❤😊
Do not worry about being happy just seeing you and Sherpa makes us happy. Short walks are great for him car rides are good and of course his garden. Just being with him is great. I’ve been there Jaime. Your immense love for Sherpa is so obvious. And his love for you is incredibly obvious. Just keep on doing the great job you’ve been doing. Maybe take him to the vet to look at that eye. But one of the greatest things you’ve done for him, is give him his wonderful garden. You can see how happy he is there in that garden. I love seeing him take a snooze in that shelter you built him. He can even do it when it’s raining, brilliant !

Sherpa is happy in his garden has the best dog dad, it is sad when they get old, smaller walks is good as they love to still sniff, I lost my wolfy at 13 to lymphoma very fast but he still loved his walks, treasure every moment 😊.

It’s always so hard to realize how fast their time goes by and that they’re now an “older dog”. We have 2 that are also at that stage and every day I make sure to do special things with them so they always know how very much they are loved. Sherpa knows how much you love him and that you will do everything you can to keep him healthy and happy. And he has so many other people that love him so much…all that love has got to help right?? You are right Jamie. Walks are important. It’s good to keep him sniffing as we don’t realise how much dogs need to use their noses. The exercises is good for his mental health as well as his physical health. Giving you a mental hug 🤗as I know how hard it can be nursing the elderly. Thank you. It’s so hard, have gone through this stage with several pets over the years and it’s hard ❤️❤️❤️❤️ it is okay to have a good cry and feel sad but as you say to adapt afterwards. Know that he has had and is having a beautiful life and he knows you love him and is evident he loves you….
My dog Zac got to 19 before his liver failed and he only lived for a few more months, but he was the healthiest dog apparently the vet had even seen, and they couldn't believe his age. Don't worry Sherpa has years ahead him yet.
I think Sherpa would be quite happy out side all day,he loves his shelter,and the grass at the bird table,but he needs to be cozy with dad at night,hope he is ok,😍😍😍😍

Our Boston is getting ready to leave us. We love her and she is given us such joy and we’ve given her a good!
Sherps will be fine as we know he's a strong beautiful boy. It also does'nt seem to make any difference to his sight, athough Sherps may take things a little slower now. Maybe it will be good to stay in his garden/house as he knows the room layout & where objects are as well. Plus he'll have you to help guide him if things become tricky when out.

He IS a beautiful old man!! I’ve had aged dogs, went through a lot of meds, appointments, foods, and I’d do it all again. Will always have a fur baby! 😊 Sherpa has the best dad! What is so neat about you and Sherpa, is that you have allowed Sherpa to be himself and let his personality shine through. It’s great how he loves the garden, and surely he knows he’s loved. Hi Jamie and Sherpa, I’m sending you love all the way from California. It’s hard for me to watch Sherpa, but I am so happy that he’s in your hands Jamie. It’s only hard for me to watch Sherpa because Sherpa reminds me of my sweet boy Kodiak and his sister Dakota they were huskies and they were litter mates, so Sherpa just brings back those memories. I appreciate you loving him the way that you do Jamie and giving him the best life ever again sending love from California.

Oh Jamie, I lost my 11 year old husky Ragnar last week, and now all my energy is going into wishing Sherpa the best and sending all my hugs to you. Watching their health go downhill is so heartbreaking and theres no way to explain it to someone who hasnt been through it. Sending all my hugs.
