Excerpts from the diary of Periapsys 12th Aprimay, 5500: After translating the galactic calendar to the orbit period of this planet I find myself having landed ignobly and wet. Encrypt insisted that I was the one who chose the landing co-ordinates that landed us in a lake, but would never make such a mistake. Bubbles’ self actualisation protocols have led them to being particularly willful with their construction priorities. I will need to make sure I am deliberate with any future instructions. 14th Aprimay: Yesterday my basic shelter was finished…but the table was not ready in time for my first meal. It must have been an ill omen, dreams of strange people practicing medicine in dark forgotten crypts plague my sleep. Who is Montoya? 15th Aprimay: Nearby villagers came to investigate in the middle of the night. While their were friendly enough for primitive rimworlders they did agree to take Encrypts favourite axe, a horrid looking ornament I was glad to be rid of. Encrypt did not stop beeping angrily for a whole hour and then took their frustration out on a squirrel. It was all I could do to contain my laughter upon encountering the scene, but I did not want to hurt its feelings further. 2nd Jugust: Montoya appeared in my dreams again. They spoke of two challenges I would face. There was falling debris of a dead spaceship from orbit, and a local tribal leader who was half crazed and forced from his tribe. The man had hoped to reclaim his position by killing me and looting my belongings. He had a long time to contemplate his choices as he bled out. I have come to believe that Montoya might be some kind of demon from the Shatterkin come to test me on this strange world. 4th Jugust: New traders arrived today clad in finer apparel and with respectable goods for offer. Either they come from more civilised lands than the tribals, or they are better looters. It reminded me that I need someplace to take care of prisoners. Bubbles did not approve of the task but had no tasks to prioritise over the jail. 7th Jugust: There are an ever increasing number of tasks for me to do. First it was just slag and glass, now there is stone to be worked and I consider cooking in the future. 8th Jugust: I found people dead near the bug caves. The traders from a few days ago, as well as a waster. I did not recognise any markings on them. This was a stark lesson to respect the great insects, but as long as I am careful and do not encroach on their territory carelessly they might help cut down on people bothering me and my great work. 10th Jugust: I brought in my first harvest today! Potatoes are an excellent crop as they are hardy and easy to work with in meals. As I was contemplating the matter of food new traders arrived and presented me an opportunity to trade the caribou who has been following me for a hen and rooster. 11th Jugust: As I was celebrating my good fortune, Montoya came to me again. They beckoned me to a dark monolith nearby but I was broken from this trance by the sound of gunshots. The fool merchants had gone through the insect caves, but they had enough numbers and firepower for some to survive. I shall save who I can and hope that this is the last time outsiders meddle in the bug caves. 12th Jugust: Two were alive and I thought I could save, but one died as I carried him back to my home. The prison has become a makeshift infirmary and I have given up on cooking for the immediate future. Nutrition paste will have to suffice, there are too many tasks and I lack enough assistants to perform them and save foolish humans from their own stupidity. Now the survivor has food poisoning from the berries. How anyone could prefer this to the logic and calculations of machines is beyond my understanding. 13th Jugust: The second survivor died today. He told me his name before he died, and I promised to remember Mandrill to ease his passing. But in truth I have no time to dig graves for these fools. There is a new demon in my dreams, Feebs speaks of dark and forbidden secrets. Encrypt has been whining when I speak of the demons and its concern is a source of great solace in these times, when it has spare moments from the task of looting the remnants of the merchant shootout with the bugs. 1st Septober: Encrypt reported cargo pods had landed with dozens of eggs. What strange happenstance. 2nd Septober: A woman who only gave “Mooney” as her name came to me requesting shelter for a full ten days. Her work with a local tyrannical has not ingratiated her with many and she needed to go to ground for a while until she could return. When she asked for the name of my steadying, I paused as I had not had time to consider a name yet. There is a weight to a name and one should not give a place or person a name carelessly. From today onwards this is the Marble Hearth of the Graven Forge. Raised up from the ground by the Forgebound, made strong by the tests Shatterkin and preserved by the calming embrace of the Stillwalkers let this be the first record of a long and storied history. So I put my pen to this page, Triune Peripasys and mark it so. 4th Septober: Mooney is wandering around outside crying because she is not a pigskin. The last pigskin I saw behaved like an animal and died to a ferret last night. Are all people on this planet mad or is just me? 8th Septober: The weather continues to grow colder and my thoughts turn to the impending winter. The steam from the geothermal geyser will keep my dwelling warm enough, but the chickens will need shelter from the frost and I will want warm clothes when I work outside. I had Bubbles set aside space and make a spot to butcher animals as I left to hunt some of the caribou. Mooney refused to help but at least she is not crying outside again. The caribou did give me some nasty bruises so if my guest is going to share my food she could at least do more to earn her keep. 9th Septober: Another stranger came to me but this time he wanted to join my work and live at the Marble Hearth. He told me he had been called Deadlift at his last home and looking at the man’s prodigious strength and his familiarity with working with nature I could see why. But he told me to call him Reejery with gratitude and relief after I told him that he could stay. I am sure he will be of more use than Mooney and will certainly be better company.

I'm enjoying your series so far! Re: steel burning, I prefer to use either FSF Tweaks or Tweaks Galore to edit the percentage burn chance of steel. The Tweaks Galore author commented that we can handwave away "burning metal" as though it's losing its temper, warping, or outright melting at high temperatures (he was saying this in the context of burning gold and silver, but it can apply to thin sheet steel structures as well). Steel default is 40% burn, IIRC. Wood is 100%. I found that setting steel to 20% burn chance is very playable for me -- it will eventually all catch fire if I allow a large conflagration to burn out of control, but usually gives me enough time to finish off a few raiders and still put out the fire. I forget if I've edited gold and silver, but they are at 40% burn chance, since they have much lower melting poitns than steel IRL. And it makes me sweat bullets every time a fire gets near my bank vault full of precious metals and statues. :D I personally need this fire nerf because I also the Uncompromising Fires mod, which gives fires in general an unpleasantly hefty buff when the environment is dry, and a debuff when the environment is wet. Wooden bases burn like matchsticks doused in gasoline. AND I'm using the Uncompromising Tribal Faction mod, which gives them a huge proportion of fire bombs and fire bows. ^^; I lost several caravan parties b/c of pawns being set on fire and running amok, before I learned to respect these tribals a lot more than their vanilla brethren.
You can throw grow zones down where the wind turbine needs space, and just set them to not sow. Or you can grow there too. Also rice works fine in regular soil. Potatoes are best in poor soil.
@@Aavak It's worth noting that you're not growing on poor soil right now as far as I can tell. The yellow soil around the water in the fertility overlay is poor soil. You're actually growing on normal (100% fertility) soil. You just don't have rich soil. So rice is going to do better as potatoes don't really take advantage of the 100%.
couple of things: Metal resources DO not decay outside, EVER, you could leave them in the swamp forever with no ill effect. Recreation is optional sleep time, pawns will sleep through it to get their full sleep. If you want to make sure they get some recreation in, you'd need a block of work to get them out of bed before the recreation slots.
@@genbokakuzu13 As long as everything goes perfectly, sure. But let's be real, a single pistol round will rarely kill someone instantly. Plus, the 1911 is just such an outdated gun in the modern age. I'd actually argue it's much more outdated than even revolvers since they at least have some niches. The 1911 has that niche of "Well, it's what I have" and that's it. "I want power" get 10mm. 2-3x the magazine capacity, 1.5-3x the KE. And you can mount a flashlight and a red dot with ease and actually have it work. "Less power than that!" Okay, get a 10mm glock and shoot 40S&W. You can get 0.75x to 1.5x the power and also use 10mm for that extra bit. "But... two world wars!" It's technology from a century ago. Just because it was serviceable up to 40ish years ago doesn't mean it's the be all end all of today. Also, small arms are the most important thing. Pistols even less so because they're almost never used. There's a reason the M1 carbine came about. Sorry, it's not relevant really, I just hate fudd lore.
@Isometrix116 I actually agree with you on these points, and further thank you for the educational bent of your comment. Now, having addressed your comment in a serious way, I mostly made my comment as a joke since the numbers lined up well but still be recognized as a bit exaggerated. Though text has a distinct lack of tone that made it fall a bit flat.
Steel is combustible, it's just a low energy reaction that has to be catalyzed by water. We call it rust. The same thing happens with copper and silver, we call them corrosion.
AAVAK IT'S 2AM WHY Anyway, having now watched the episode, a few observations: 1: Periapsys is bloodlust. As such, he doesn't give a crap about if clothing is tainted. ALSO: Bloodlust doesn't get a mood buff from combat. Rather, they get a mood buff from watching people die, and a bigger one from actually being the one that kills them. 2: Your toxic waste pack plan, whilst ingenious as raider defense... is perhaps not the best for getting trade caravans in. Cause uhhh... well we got a demonstration of that. 3: Is it me. Or is Cassie throwing a suspicious amount of bloodlust/psychopath pawns our way? Though, given the seed name... I can see why this is happening... *AND I APPROVE.*
1:47:35 The reason Mooney, didn't get upset at the caribou being killed, is because they have the psychopath trait, meaning they didn't get upset about Periapsys killing the caribou, in the same way they wouldn't get upset about killing a humanoid, either.
I have always loved your Rimworld style and the way you give the small scale the love it needs; but how lacking Rimworld has been! I feel like I put in thousands of hours into Rimworld between series ;) I'm so happy to see more. I hope to see you build up a big colony in a long playthrough! As for CE, "being from the uk" is no excuse! _Knowledge™_ has no boundaries. Like most word use, "the right way" of saying things often comes down to appealing to an in-group, rather than dodging confusion. In fact, that often comes down to appealing to national groups; like you'll likely end up saying French "gauge", as that's what the Americans say, rather than English "bore". As long as you're not so wrong that it confuses everyone, don't worry. Even for things like "clip"; it's been so consistently confused that it's pretty much a synonym of "magazine", even though they are their own things. Context most often tells you what someone truly means.
Less of an excuse, and more a management of expectations; an excuse would involve me using it as a justification for being wrong, rather than an invitation for correction ;)
I wouldn't have said anything but you pointed out that you wanted to try to get the gun terminology right (the 1911 uses a magazine), so here is a simple breakdown for clips vs magazines: A magazine feeds the rounds into the chamber via a spring or gravity for example. A clip has no mechanical, nor moving parts but rely on mechanisms in the gun to feed the ammunition into the chamber. A clip therefore very often is just a guiding rail that fits around the rimmed base of a cartridge where as a magazine will enclose the rounds on all sides but one. TLDR: Google "M1 garand clip" and notice that there is no spring. Then google "magpul tmag" and you will see a spring inside the magazine.
45:03 Urrrmmm actshually - So, steel can catch fire. It's not common, but there are a few applications where I've seen it considered. Mostly, its stainless steels around 350C/600K with certain other conditions met. It is pretty rare and most stainless steels don't even have a fire rating. Carbon alloy steels without significant amounts of chromium or nickle tend to fair better and have an autoignition temperature like 50 degrees from their melting point of like 1500C/1750K. The most common times you will see steel burn is when it has been made into thin strands such as steel wool... but that isn't the point. So yeah! Steel can catch fire, just very rarely.
19:00: TBF, most people use "clip" and "magazine" interchangeably these days, I wouldn't worry too much about minutiae like that. 51:20: RHA = Rolled Homogeneous Armour. Basically, a normal, nothing-fancy, rolled steel plate. 59:00: You _could_ have Periapsis melee the guy, but I'm not sure that repeatedly kicking him until he finally dies counts as merciful either.
I am using a mod that allows you to type a number directly instead of using the sliders, and it works everywhere... I'll have to look through my mod list for the name!
I just got to the anima tree part, so I don't know if you figure it out later, but you can replant it in a different spot. The tool tip pops if you click on it.
@@Aavak Unless I have a mod that adds it to the Anima. I definitely saw it when you clicked on the pine tree and I thought it was added as part as the nature ideology since they can't cut down trees.

kind of sad this wasnt a dark aavak series. seems like the sort of game loop... edit: i really hope dark aavak makes an appearence at some point in the ancient danger.
Yeah, the same mod that changes the textures of walls based on what they are made of (which is the main reason I got it. The glass was just a bonus lol)
Well yes, but there's a distinct difference between a solid beam of steel and... Thin steel mesh? Whatever steel wool is actually classified as it's closer to metal shavings (which are rather infamously combustible) than metal sheet.
They're part of a mod, specifically the mod gives better wall textures (that changes based on material) as well as better integrates doors into the walls :)
@@Aavak Thank you for the answer, and you said it in the start of episode 2. But I think I will try vanilla RimWorld for a run or two before diving into the wonderful world of mods. It's been years since the last time I tried that, so it'll be a fresh experience that too. You're right, it seems like Cassandra are filling the coffers with next to useless tatt that's worth a lot in her calculations. Perhaps she senses your restrain from rigging up a mega defensive base and calculate that you're behind some arbitrary curve? Best wishes and good luck with the series, hope it becomes the longest series to date!
@@Aavak Thank you for the reply and I'm so looking forwards to seeing the rest of this series. Can I ask you to make a super cut of this series, stitching together a bunch of episodes into a half a day to a 24 hours episode? As you might have noticed, many other creators are doing this now, effectively double dipping on the return of time investment. Many of these super or mega cuts show at least equal or more views than the episodic series combined, with nearly nothing in extra efforts. So I urge you to at least try it and see what the return on investment is for you, perhaps that'll give you a more solid revenue base? Best wishes, take care and stay safe, sire!
At high temperatures steel becomes more reactive with oxygen (this is how an oxy acetylene cutter works) as it oxidizes it will produce a flame but the energy release wont sustain the reaction.... It burns but it wont catch fire?
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, while it doesn't burn in the same way as wood, carbon can burn. Steel can burn if heated to extreme temperatures, or exposed to enough oxygen to start rusting process. Namely just below its melting point, the carbon begins to crack, and crumble, eventually leading the alloy to disintegrate, and burning up the carbon.
Love the timelapse at the end, is that from a mod? Also, Aavak leaving a ferret to do ferret things = expected. Aavak not taking in the ferret and having a ferret colony = unexpected. I always mod ferrets into my Rimworld run and they always get a place in my base. My little stinkers might not know what their papa is doing in game, but its how they get to play along while snoozing. 🦦

I forget if I've edited gold and silver, but they are at 40% burn chance, since they have much lower melting poitns than steel IRL. And it makes me sweat bullets every time a fire gets near my bank vault full of precious metals and statues. :D
I personally need this fire nerf because I also the Uncompromising Fires mod, which gives fires in general an unpleasantly hefty buff when the environment is dry, and a debuff when the environment is wet.
The only modded Rimworld I will be watching! wooo!
Love the timelapse idea. Maybe that's been a thing in your previous rimworlds, idk i only joined during mech engineer. Have a good time!
nah, this is something new I'm trialing for this series, seeing how it goes :)
Reads research on Healthcare while being told to finish off a pawn.... that's.... evil...
The better you know how to put someone back together, the better you know how to take them apart. A grim reality for sure.
In space, no one can hear you violate the geneva convention

There's another good use for the land under wind turbines.
Farms.
Ptats don't block the wind, but do block trees from popping up ^^
Never doubt the Sombrero, it knows what it wants, has absolutely nothing to do with the zone area, no not at all.
You can throw grow zones down where the wind turbine needs space, and just set them to not sow. Or you can grow there too. Also rice works fine in regular soil. Potatoes are best in poor soil.
That's a really good suggestion actually, some flowers or something to keep our planters busy (and happy)
@@Aavak I'm an hour in, and I'll be looking forward to the next one. Rimworld let's plays are hit or miss, but I'll be back for more of this.
2 HOURS?!? Praise Aavak!

... it's literally there, right under the little (i) icon XD Has been since the video went live XD
@Aavak, how weird! It didnt appear on mobile (checked it twice!) Ah well at least my favourite welsh youtuber is on the ball 😊
couple of things: Metal resources DO not decay outside, EVER, you could leave them in the swamp forever with no ill effect.
Recreation is optional sleep time, pawns will sleep through it to get their full sleep. If you want to make sure they get some recreation in, you'd need a block of work to get them out of bed before the recreation slots.
First time?
The reason it's M1911 btw is because that's the year that model of pistol was introduced.
TWO WORLD WARS
Probably a lot more than that since Rimworld takes place in the 6th millenium.
It's also because of how many bullets you need to deal with an intruder. Mmmm 1 and then you need to call 911 to come get the body.
@@genbokakuzu13 Oops! Sorry. I've seen people say it seriously and, well, I guess Poe's law. My bad though!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤ so happy I've missed your rimworld playthroughs
Steel is combustible, it's just a low energy reaction that has to be catalyzed by water. We call it rust. The same thing happens with copper and silver, we call them corrosion.
AAVAK IT'S 2AM WHY
Anyway, having now watched the episode, a few observations:
1: Periapsys is bloodlust.
Because it's 5pm on the west coast of the US, Heh
Love the look of the marble!
I wouldn't have said anything but you pointed out that you wanted to try to get the gun terminology right (the 1911 uses a magazine), so here is a simple breakdown for clips vs magazines:
A magazine feeds the rounds into the chamber via a spring or gravity for example.
This is a great way to explain it, thanks :D
good fun. it's been too long since a proper rimWorld dropped
Yeah, and given Periapsis melee skill, they'd likely kill them by kicking them in the kidneys too, not even head shots xD
Yeah...
I strangely enjoy this.

I am using a mod that allows you to type a number directly instead of using the sliders, and it works everywhere... I'll have to look through my mod list for the name!
Yes please!!
@@Aavak Hmm. tried linking it, looks like my comment got auto-deleted. Anyway, it is the "BetterSliders" mod by mod author 'randoo'
I just got to the anima tree part, so I don't know if you figure it out later, but you can replant it in a different spot. The tool tip pops if you click on it.
Oh, hadn't considered that!
@@Aavak Unless I have a mod that adds it to the Anima. I definitely saw it when you clicked on the pine tree and I thought it was added as part as the nature ideology since they can't cut down trees.
Personally I find Helixian gas almost essential at this point, diversifies your power sources and temperature control as well as construction benches. Also dubs bad hygiene.
Steel does indeed burn... in a pure oxygen environment.
Val was a neanderthal, don't they learn slowly?
Behold! A belayed comment for St Algorithmus
@everyone_here Friendly reminder to check to see if you have the bell on, because I haven't gotten either RimWorld video notification sent to me.
kind of sad this wasnt a dark aavak series. seems like the sort of game loop...
edit: i really hope dark aavak makes an appearence at some point in the ancient danger.

Hell yeah.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out when I record the next episode :)
49:45 Either I'm deeply misunderstanding something, or just above the Final Result for the Threat Points Breakdown it declared that 35 * 1 = 40.
I give aavak a 10 episode run before he needs to restart another run
How come? What do you think the killing blow will be?
The monolith will be the killing blow
In the settings, you can allow to show the gun that your colonist is equipped. You don't a mod anymore.
59:45 did the builder bot finish building the wall, and then straight up WALKED THROUGH IT?!
Can we name the newbie be named Ferret . . . .
no reason. Epically cents one got GOT by one.
I wish we could tame wargs. We could have a guard warg.

wont the toxic packs make it so you wont be able to leave the map without fighting as well once the insects come?
By using forbidden doors it should be okay.

59:46 did anyone else saw how the bubbles jumped the wall?😅
yay
Is the glass wall part of a mod?
Yeah, the same mod that changes the textures of walls based on what they are made of (which is the main reason I got it. The glass was just a bonus lol)
I would suggest lighting steel wool with an open flame, and marvel at burning steel.
Well yes, but there's a distinct difference between a solid beam of steel and... Thin steel mesh? Whatever steel wool is actually classified as it's closer to metal shavings (which are rather infamously combustible) than metal sheet.
Are glass in vanilla now, or is that part of a mod?
I couldn't see this at release, but now I have another episode to binge!
They're part of a mod, specifically the mod gives better wall textures (that changes based on material) as well as better integrates doors into the walls :)

Thank you for the answer, and you said it in the start of episode 2.
Yeah, I totally agree on going vanilla for your return, good to have a solid basis of comparison before you jump into mods!
@@Aavak
Thank you for the reply and I'm so looking forwards to seeing the rest of this series.
Best wishes, take care and stay safe, sire!
gimme gimme more rimworld
At high temperatures steel becomes more reactive with oxygen (this is how an oxy acetylene cutter works) as it oxidizes it will produce a flame but the energy release wont sustain the reaction.... It burns but it wont catch fire?
you working on ammo says ya need research project
