I introduced this song to a friend back in 1979 when I worked at a chemical plant, our job consisted of filling 55 gallon drums with various chemicals. One day my friend started drumming the tune of "Chicken Train" on empty 55 gal. drums while belting out the lyrics, by the end of the shift everyone in the department knew the song. To break the monotony of a work day, once in a while he would start drumming the tune and everyone would join in. Good times, good memories. Thank you mangeldeth74.

The first time I heard this was on an 8 track my sister had in her '74 Ford Pinto. I was 13 and we would cruise all up and down the streets of our town with the windows down and "Chicken Train" blasting! We laughed our butts off. One of the best memories from the mid '70's. I later bought the vinyl album and I can honestly tell you that this was one rare album that I loved every song on it! These guys never got the recognition they deserved. Still have the album to this day and it never fails to put me in a happy place when I hear it

I believe this is off their first album. It was released in the early 70s but I never heard them until 1979. I lived in rural northern Maine and, for whatever reason, their debut album suddenly became popular among my friends and peers in my area. Soon as I heard If You Wanna Get To Heaven I loved it enough to buy the LP myself. Got my copy home, slapped it on the ol' turntable, and was grooving to the first few tracks. Then Chicken Train started and my groove became ruckus laughter! Holy shit it was hilarious! I kept imagining a group of bucktoothed hillbillies, one, of course, named Huckleberry, wearing denim overalls and straw hats hopping around singing it! 😂😂😂.
It's still funny af today! After hearing that track I kind of just slipped the disc back in the sleeve and, uhhh, stored it somewhere I was fairly certain I'd never find it again! 😂😂

All kiddin' aside, these guys were a great band. Their sound was very similar, if not identical, to the pre-1976 Eagles and the Prairie League; these guys are much more authentic, though. The Eagles, with all due respect (I liked them, as well), wanted to convey the country-rock genre; the Daedevils were the real deal. Lots of great stuff off of the Grey Whistle Test.

When I was I college a buddy of mine had made a mix tape (remember those?🤣), and this was one of the songs he'd put on there. Still to this day, I remember him playing it the first time, and telling me "check this next tune out". I looked at him bewildered, and asked why, he said "because I think it's funny." 😂

In 1983, they came to the University of Kentucky Student Ballroom. Expecting to sell 3500 tickets only 350 sold, give or take a few. About 250 of those were fans of them but many came at my urging because all my friends and bandmates(two bands, one hardcore southern rock Stryker, and another country rock Muddy Creek which were both very popular around here)knowing that Ozark is why i played harmonica the way i do and that i considered Steve Cash a god lol. So thinking we were going to a sold out show i armed myself with my bandeleros with 16 harps planning on staying in the back and playing along unnoticed. It did not turn out that way. To make a long story short i was singled out and humiliated by the band. That did not sit well with a few of my really, really redneck friends. A few of them jumped onstage and began to tell them just what they thought of what just happened. They got an explanation of why, even though not many came to the show, pointing out that the vast majority of the audience was there because i asked them to come the previous weekend at the bar we were playing at(the concert was on a wednsday night). When things calmed down they asked me to come up on stage. And Steve Cash asked me what i liked and i said "everything" and then said show me what you got. I started with Chicken Train. And after that they tokd everyone "lock the doors!, we are going to party!!" That was a little after 8pm they did not finish playing until after 1am. And then the next 4 months was the adventure of a lifetime. At that first ahow with them though Steve told me that i will play the harp and that freed him up to play other instruments. Those guys could play anything you put in their hands. And though i did get to play with other big acts on the road the expierience with the Daredevils was the most fun i have ever had playing music. If you want to get to heaven, you got to raise a little hell!!

Seen these guys at the Great American music hall in San Francisco in 1973 . In a up front and close setting . The Ozark fellas were in a zone , and responded well to our group of 16 dancing in the isles that night, Back in the day memories .

My father was in the army with Steve when we were stationed in Goppingen germany, good famaily freind. I remenber him playing guitar right in our liveingroom. then after my dad retired, I think Steve was RIFTED to many captains in the army at the time. anyway got to see them live in Laramie Wy. I got up as close to the stage as I could. He recomized me. Had a roadie bring me a back stage pass, got to meet everone, reminise with Steve. good times
