Interesting that you mentioned Horse lover fat as that's basically Philip K Dick and I got an interest to read Murakami as a similar writer . I started with Hard Boiled Wonderland which I enjoyed despite it's length. I went on to start IQ84 and I gave up in it as it seemed like fluff, over long descriptions of meaningless scenes. Kafka could be interesting though
Ya if you like vslis, kafka on the shore will be a hit.. i know i mentioned the rat but the alter ego in this novel names crow or whateve is very similar too @@keithparker1346
I enjoyed your take a lot and it recalled the novel and interested me in the newer novels I hadn't hear about. I forgot how weird the author is. I think I was also a lot more naive and unread back then. I do want to re-read. Please post more of your thoughts on anything you would say about this author, or Shinto or Japan or anything. You have a fairly erudite perspective I think, if you could even go longer on a particular point, to help explain things which puzzle some of us older American readers about Japanese novels.

I highly recommend you start with Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, I think it is his best and a bit more structured than this one. I have a review / deep read of that one here on the channel as well!
Very true! I read that one right when it was released in America and was honestly a bit let down, which was strange considering how much I love his writing. I also DNF'd Killing Commendatore. I do plan on eventually giving IQ84 a reread for the channel.
@LiminalSpaces03 such a hypnotizing book. I was also disappointed, mainly by the unresolved plot elements. I've come to appreciate it as a postmodern sort of thing. Chekovs gun is a theme that explicitly talked about. Once I realized that some of the elements I disliked were intentional, the ones I did shined much brighter. Fantastic channel btw! I've just read walls of eryx because of your video on it.

I've read and enjoyed several novels by Murakami but I haven't yet read this one for some reason. I guess I'm saving it.
