This song is about the horrible depression Tuomas slipped into after the band fired Tarja. People he thought were his friends turned on him. He thought about committing suicide, but fortunately for the world he chose to do it virtually in a song. Some of the symbolism is drawn from Edger Allen Poe's story the Pit and the Pendulum, which is about the last thoughts of a person who is strapped to a table while pendulum slowly descends to kill him. Hence the reference toTuomas only having 3 minutes left. And as to your comment about Floor's tattoo's, she got them sometime between Wacken 2013 and the 2015 tour. At Wacken her arms at least were tattoo free. I will also say this. Although the music, arrangement, and vocals are fabulous, this song is about the lyrics and their meeting. You are seeing into Tuomas' soul. In my opinion, this is an unmatched masterpiece.

This song is so wonderful, I nearly cried at their concert when they played it live. I see others have commented on the " 3 minutes" part. Another interesting "easter egg" is the lyric about the second robber to the right of Christ. The immediate reaction is to think of the crucifixion, however their was only one robber to the right of Christ. It actually refers to a famous painting of the Last Supper, and the second Disciple to the right of Christ is..... Judas! The Metal Mozart strikes again!

Tuomas is a genius when it comes to the composing of the music. When watching Wacken 2013. This was Floors first real outing with the band. You can watch the whole thing and you'll notice as their playlist moves along Tuomas starts to relax more and during Ghost Love Score Floor hit a certain note and Tuomas gets this huge grin like his worries were laid to rest right then and there. The rest of the concert he's totally enjoying it.

we usually recommend to people do their research before they watch this song but this is fine too. I like how you enjoyed this without knowing the full story behind this sing and the baggage it comes with it. once you know that and you listen to this again its totally a different feeling and I'm glad you get to have both
here we go I may not be able to say it all as well others but lemme try
this song is Tuomas committing suicide in the song cuz he didn't want to do it in real life! this was written after Tarja was fired from the band and everyone hated Tuomas cuz they blamed him... it was such a heated topic and big at that moment even the prime minister of their country Finland commented about it. this affected tuomas so bad he was so depressed and the only way he could move forward was to write this and express his feelings through that instead doing anything scary in real life!
it is a heavy song and he usually asks to mute the lyrics in his ear piece cuz its too painful for him. you see others come up to him during this cuz they want to check up on him and see if he is ok or not. floor does a wonderful job carrying the feelings through her singing and they did this song only cuz they were filming this concert it certainly is not something they do often as it takes it toll on the band specially Toumas
anyways that's the background for this dark song and i'm sure once you know this you can feel this song on a different light!
here is a little fun fact to finish this lengthy comment when the talking parts are saying he only got 3 minutes to die its exactly 3 minutes till the pendulum decapitates the poet (Tuomas)
I hope that was a good enough job I did trying to explain the situation as always keep up the good spirit and have a good day

AFAIK there wasn't two robbers to the right on the crosses, but the Da Vinci painting has Judas on the second right when looking out of the painting, possibly a reference to the, or a, betrayal and backlash of the fans et al.
"Cut in half, infanticide" - We know Tuomas uses the "boy" reference to himself a lot, he has said so because of a fulfilled and very happy childhood; so maybe cut in half is the two sides of living or suicide and the latter would be infanticide with reference to boy.
Who knows, Tuomas writes most often in very poetic, allegorical and metaphorical terms, he doesn't even explain the lyrics to the band themselves, it's all open to interpretation as the listener sees it and even for Floor vocalising the lyrics and emotions, she says Tuomas accepts "near enough" for her lyrical understanding and interpretation.

I understand that dark mindset, I've walked the edge of an abyss many times, so I definitely get it. If anything, this piece proves that even darkness can be beautiful if you care to understand it.

Looked it up: Guy Elliot is the boy soprano who sings the first part. The spoken part is done by another soprano named Tom Williams. Both from the Reigate St Mary's Choir School

I started watching kinda irritated that you didn't research the story of this song.. ended up being glad you didn't. Raw emotions that this song gave you, despite not knowing what the deeper meaning was, was on point. It takes you into EVERY human emotion and settles into every pore you've got. I always feel so drained after listening to this one and yet, filled with so much love.

Another EPIC Nightwish classic is "Greatest Show on Earth" (you MUST see the Tempere version - by far the best version IMHO) - when you watch make sure to stay to the very end of the credits. Greatest Show on Earth chronicles the Earth from creation to the end. Another couple of great songs from the Wacken show are "Storytime" and "Dark Chest of Wonders" (the high energy show opener). Basically, EVERY song form Wacken is a masterpiece and you will enjoy every one.

You’ll see a lot of comments saying you should have researched the back story to the song before doing your reaction. Normally I’d agree, but the depth with which you so obviously feel the music and lyrics is obvious and I think you demonstrated that yet again. I really like your Nightwish reactions for that reason. Good job. Cool shirt, btw.

I normally recommend a deep dive before this song but having said that and being one of the people this song nearly brings tears to I see that a deep dive first might not have been a good thing ,though a good portion of nightwish fans encourage the letting loos of tears and emotions for some of us it's not a matter of letting it happen it's the degree to which it happens ,one of the things I've learned over the years is reading people by their movement their eyes and such sometime my life depends on seeing and recognizing those details I can see that Tia here had rather strong reaction to add to it the fact that her cat even showed up to comfort I honestly think a full deep dive might have been more than could handle all in all good reaction one of the few i won't be upset about no deep dive

Well done Tia, your commentators have given you the back story, but you go back to when the boy narrator says I have only 3 minutes and counting and start your watch. . . . . . . . . . .
Keep in mind, Tuomas has a great affinity for the ocean, you'll see this come up time and again, also Poet, Boy, or Writer is Tuomas referring to himself, so the boy narrator is Tuomas speaking directly to us.
Also bear in mind with the back story you have been given, the last part called Mother and Father is almost verbatim of what Tuomas' parents said to him, and this part especially with Floor's empathic delivery is extremely moving, some of us have tears.

_"I could sit here and just listen to this part all day"_ I agree, it's beautiful and moving 😊 The oboe has got such a melancholic, almost introspective sound and I wish that it would be used more often in modern music. It was definitely the right choice for this particular section. Floor's ending notes tend to hit me pretty deep - another fan here on RUclips expressed it beautifully by likening it to "a siren who is mourning the dead poet".
Thanks for the reaction! As always, I love your enthusiasm :)

Interesting fact: take a look at the timestamps..when it says "3 minutes and counting" and when Tuomas does the throatcut gesture. The Song is written that it is exactly 3 minutes.

  • @randymarple9830

Poet is a difficult composition to react to without knowing and understanding why Tuomas wrote it. Mike Gershon explains it well. I viewed it not having the knowledge and, although I was in awe of the music, I didn't understand the meaning of the lyrics, partly because I had trouble hearing the lyrics. I can't watch it without crying. And at the end, when Marko and Emppu are checking on Tuomas, as Floor completes the last note, she turns her head from the crowd and toward Tuomas. Only after she sees he is okay does she look back to the crowd and say "Thank you". I can hear the emotion in her voice, and I cry again.

Please read the lyrics and try to understand their meanings. This one is more than a song. It’s representing the dark passion period of Tuomas’ live in which he almost suïcide himself, but fortunately he only did it literally in this song.
