i have been building up my species for over 2 years now. they already have their own lore and alphabet too, kinda just realized i was making my own species tho. mainly because i started when i was 10 and didnt know what furries were lol

Definitely really helpful cause I've recently have continued making my species batinu's a Shiba inu+bat hybrid with dragon+cat like features, and very mischievous nature and by the help of a few friends i hope to get them out by Halloween!

This is definitely helpful, and I will take all of this into consideration as I'm making my own species. The species I'm making are actually meant to fit in with a dnd setting I'm working on as well, so lots of high fantasy and divine intervention
My species akinas was just me having a random obsessing with deer and forest but I didn’t want them too like deers so that’s how the akinas where born , and also the obsession with stars and space
I've got a custom species in the works, but mostly did the lore, anatomy, name, and everything else except the drawings because my aet skills aren't super great. But im proud with how it turned out :)

My species is called Silk Batbeasts my OC of them is Macaroni she's very sweet but also pretty sassy and has a fake Protogen mask that she stores in the back of her closet for when it's game night with her friends
I am obsessed with worldbuilding and all the species that come up from that and get interest, friends say I should make them into original species... so I finally did with one I created 5-6 years ago! The last tip is definitely the best one. The species I like the *most* are the ones that come from a place of passion

I have their cultures, planets, biology, religion planned. Im finally writing it all in probably two docs.
And your last point is so true, warbirds started off as LOMBAXES from ratchet and clank, until i wanted to go in a different direction and make them more bird like.

These are some really great tips for making something marketable and appealing! I'd love to add that not every original species needs to be a community based one, that there is a big difference between what I'd consider a "headworld" species and a furry fandom "open/closed" species. The two can easily overlap, such as with vernids, but also not every species needs to be brandable. I say this reading the comments and seeing people talk about accidentally creating species, and as someone who has created my own species since I was young because I love biology, the vast majority I'd never try to brand and wouldn't have enough variety to make different individual designs. But hey even then something you don't expect others to like ends up sticking, ya never know!

I have made species for lore reasons for a personal project, but it would be cool if someone made characters based on them, But sometimes im afraid theyre only interesting to me.

I’m excited to start working on my own species! Idk if I should just make some lore, or like an entire book of lore, an alphabet, and an entire habitat.
I’m currently working on a BUNCH of species for a world building project, and the main and most developed species is my favorite, even though they have *ZERO* and I mean *ZERO* natural variation in color or shape, but they are intelligent humanoids, which means there are almost no limits on what accessories, clothes, or other unnatural modification they can have, which means even though they don’t vary in natural appearance, in modern times they can be as diverse in appearance as humans can be.
Edit: there is ONE thing that allows some good variability: they have wings, and those wings are not like any found in the natural world. They are large, and they are thin and papery, yet they are still strong and flexible. They have no skin, bones, or even blood supply, and very few nerves so their wings feel very little pain, which means they can have piercings to attach jewelry to, and the wings can also be carved into to create patterns, possibly even have colored plastics attached to the holes to create a sun catcher effect.

I'm brainstorming a species as I watch this!
They're currently called Space Cats, and although the feline appearance, actually originated from their own planet from canon slime creatures! They have no mouth and instead absorb special moonlight from the moon that orbits their planet. They range in personality from calm, likeable felines to absolute gremlins! I might add more once I'm done with the species.

I have a species of my own that I created when just doodling and I have poured tons of lore and ideas into them, from the continent they live on having a war with the united kingdom (long story) to something as subtle as gender differences. I saw this vid as I was sketching a character of this species and I have my own server for them and I'm trying to grow a community (if you want the link I can put it in the replies) (also the server is for my 4 different species, all pretty simple, but still, the original one is the "main focus" of the server.) I have put my heart and soul into this species and I have loved every second of it.

+ don't just make a mismash of traits, group similar traits with variants, organize the species, and provide rhyme and reason to them, if theirs a subspecies that limited or off limits, explain why! Is it like leaders of the group only? Mutants with mutations sure make the creature look cool and edgy but also endanger it's own well being, etc!
+ Consider gender and disabilities, so many fcmg open and closed species make unnecessary strange and isolating rules against have Queer and disabled characters, either outright outlawing them or limiting them HEAVILY which is gross and homophobic, as well as generally just ablest. It's caused drama time and time again, just budundundj. Also if your character species is agender sexless, actually freaking commit to it instead of unessarily adding boobies.
I created a new series titled My Kitty And Me Searching For Love, which is a teen romantic urban phantasy about a girl named Mellissa, who can talk to animals, and is an artist, plus she falls in love with Tony. Both of them get the news that Princess Camelia lost Pendant of Heart, thus they recruit Athena, Nathan, Eva, Marcus, Kai and Nika to choose the right pet for each teenager. During every mission to choose the pet for each child, Nora, Azalea, Olgoi and Khorkhoi, Dellusia and Lorelei try to steal the right pet they have chosen for a teenager in question, but later, during the series, they redeem themselves and join Mellissa's team. After that, Mellissa confronts her father, believing him to be a mad scientist that created the monstrous evil versions of her cute animal creations, but he tells her he is a scientist that makes cute cuddly animals out of her drawings using his science. Bumblebee Gang find Pendant Of Heart and return it to Princess Camelia, whom they recruit to Mr. Tophat, who has kidnapped Mellissa's father and was manipulating Nora's father to make dark and evil imaginary animals. As the series progresses, Mellisa is afraid of kangaroos because of her past trauma (being attacked and kicked by a kangaroo) and Nora exploits her weakness by drawing carnivorous kangaroos and bringing her drawing to life with magic, but later, Nora stops drawing carnivorous kangaroos and Mellissa defeats her fear of kangaroos
