  • Abandoned mine #1 on my Nevada trip with Graham (Mines of the West). We made the drive from Oregon down to our campsite just outside the mouth of this canyon. Hiking up early in the morning we passed the cabins and mill, eventually reaching the mostly collapsed portal to the mine. As well as being extensive horizontally, the main adit had many enormous stopes, winzes and raises going to more workings of the mine that we didn’t explore. The workings on this claim date to 1916, and were worked through until the early 50s, following a boost in production due to the demand of WWII. Exploring such a complex labyrinth that lay just behind a nearly collapsed portal was a great experience. Stay tuned for the other explorations from this trip as well as a trip highlight video.

the stope you show at about 14:44 is a shrinkage stope. the mining technique was to take a layer 6 to 8 feet high across the length of the stope, about 30 percent can be removed when blasted into rubble, the rest remains to work from then take the next layer or lift repeating the 30 percent removal in steps until the top of the stope or ore body is reached. when mining is done, all the remaining ore can then be removed leaving that vertical cavern you see without anything left behind but air. very efficient way to mine in those days. I worked stopes like that in my early years of mining.

This one was on my list for a while, but now I don't need to go anymore since you guys did such a good job of covering it. Nice work.

Spam and Treat are 2 different brands. Treat was a cheaper alternative to Spam. Spam was ham and I believe Treat was a ham and chicken mix. I almost believe it is still made but I'm not sure.
