I've seen Pete live many times. He knows tone, he's tasteful, well spoken and genuine. Trust his assessments, you'll save a lot of money and disappointment. Great hair too. 😎👍
You're a real class act, Pete. Your playing is always amazing, yet it doesn't get in the way of your demos. I always come away from your videos feeling like I really learned something. All the best, mate - you deserve it!
Pete - I get pumped when I get an email stating you have posted a demo. You are the best and demoing products and your playing is amazing! Each of your "demo songs" is like a hit as well! Thanks so much for sharing with the rest of us! You rock man!
Pete makes me want to buy every single piece of gear he demos, EVEN such gear that I've tried and dismissed earlier. He just makes everything sound so damn good it's frankly a little frustrating for those of us going through tons of gear trying to find "great tone", while Pete could pretty much run the guitar through a Belgian waffle iron, and it would sound epic :)
Aw, thanks Richard, I think that theres SO much good gear these days. It's really pretty easy to get a great tone, with all the great options out there!
Pete Thorn Couldn't agree more Pete, we're living a golden age for gear! :) I myself have a custom p2p amp getting built 2015, 4-channels with everything from Dumble and JM TwoRock clean circuits, to Friedman BE, to more hard rock and metal than you can shake a stick at :P Add to that the plethora of great pedals out there, my oh my! On the other hand though, as the rainbow of great tones expand, I find myself always looking for that next shade of "great", it's almost too much to choose from :) PS. One amp I do need to try (but that you won't find up here in Northern Sweden for sure) is your PT100! Thanks again for all the great vids and playing, you're a constant source of inspiration :)
This guy could sell unpolished turds with his demos! Seriously, though, this is a great demo of the DS1X; a buddy of mine has one and I'm pretty impressed to hear an unmodded Boss pedal sound so good. Definitely warrants a good look. Thanks, Pete!
I know I'm like 6 years late, but oh my god I want both those pedals. I have the originals, but these sound so much better. And I'm also sold on the Suhr T with 'buckers. AND what excellent playing, as always.
My all time favorite tone as a teenager in the 1980s and my limited knowledge on gear was my 1981 Marshall JCM 800 and my OD1. 1977 with the 16 prong jrc4558 I think? And my 1972 Les All Custom with WCR Handwound p/ups I installed in the 1990s. I didn't realize how good my original Les Paul p/ups were. We learn as we go. Great stuff Pete!
I don't know how people researched equipment purchases before these interwebs came along. You have THE BEST product reviews out there. Thanks for what you do. To show my appreciation for your thorough service, I bought your latest CD. The nuance and variety in your playing and tone and your killer technique makes it so engaging, I can't get enough.
10years later DS1X is still my fave dirt pedal and tone shaping ability is near perfect and pairing it with Donner Dumbal drive to get some of the so called umf factor and fatten it all up. I do thing it has a super cool ability to TIGHTEN the attack of your entire pedal board I dont know what it is, but I dig it.
Hey There Pete You have the best pedal demos on RUclips because you actually know what your playing and we get to hear worthy original compositions on the fly.Keep up the good work and long live real Rock&Roll!!!!!!!!!!
ok the DS1X is a totally different beast, I need to get my hands on that little bastard.. was gonna go for the Revv g3 but it's over kill for the kind of music I play (punk rock, grunge)
Pete Thorn is a very talented professional, and I do like to watch his demo's to see what, if anything, I can pick up technique-wise, if indeed I could even do it. I also like that he's more of the "old school" type of rocker .... good tones, and less "flashy" speed just for the sake of it, with more emphasis on musical phrasing. This is the truly inspiring aspect of his playing that attracts an older fellow like me. Having said this, I just have to say that most all of these demo's sound pretty much exactly alike. I've heard Pete demo pedals and amps, and it really doesn't matter what the device is, because everything sounds the same. Most likely, this is due to his studio configuration, and how the sound is conditioned for playing into computer software, with the attendant studio tailoring of the output - compression, EQ'ing, filtering, etc. This is no doubt deliberate, as he wants the final sound to be "appealing" to the listening market who are the ones buying all of this gear, and supporting his sponsorship. This type of processed "fusion / rock" sound is the current ear candy, and draws many players into the fold. I would like to see demo's of gear that is reproduced in a natural, open-air environment, so that the particular product being demo'ed can be heard the way it REALLY sounds in a live situation. It's okay to pump a signal into a processed rig, because many folks do it that way; but for the many players like me who emphasize real, live sound, it's basically impossible to tell what an amp or pedal really SOUNDS like, because a signal can be processed into anything, and the result can make a $100 pedal sound like a $3000 amp. That's the fundamental problem with today's "generic" processed studio sounds.
11:14 is the most musical "Boston-esque" pick slide I've ever heard!! Had to rewind several times to see what you're doing differently than other players. Looks like you're sliding your left hand up the frets while scraping the pick a surprisingly short distance just over the pickups. It's a weird thing to comment on, (I know) but you've obviously mastered the technique! Great demo of these smooth sounding pedals, Pete. I need a DS1X now!
Yes! Thank you! I've been trying to find a distortion or an overdrive. I commented about the jhs sweet combo to see if I can get a good distortion, but also that gives a lighter side for chord progress. But that ds1x does exactly what I was looking for. A great distortion that doesn't drown out your melody. The beetles chord progression you did is what sold me letting them ring because I've been writing music letting my chords ring out and the distortions I've been using kill the notes. I hate it. Haha! Getting mine on pay day. You're the best, pete! Glad I found your channel.
That "Beatley" progression sounded like Kings X. Love your demos Pete! Very thorough and professional and I highly respect what you do and how you do it! Keep up the great videos!
Excellent demo! I already own the DS-1X and it works and sounds Great. I've been shopping around for an Overdrive Equivalent to dial down the rough edges in other parts of my music. The OD-1X seems the Logical choice, given that it has the same Attack Sensitive Circuitry as it's Distortion Counterpart. This Video really helped Me finalize My decision. Thanks again.
In my main pedal board I primarily use a mix of the Bogner Ecstasy Red and a Pigtronix Fat Drive, but in my little portable board for school I have an SD-1 with a ProCo Rat to boost it. As much as the OD-1X sounds great the price is just a little too steep for an upgrade over my SD-1 which still gets the job done. My SD-1 was the best $30 I ever spent haha!
Very impressive , will have to check these out for sure . They sound quite natural too considering the digital processing that is in these..very nice !
Excellent demo. Take a OD1X into a Marshall 2204 with the Amp gain on 10:00, turn up the master and play the OD1X with pedal gain about 3:00 KILLER. Turn the pedal off and have a great clean sound that can do funk or strumming. I don't like this pedal into a very over driven amp the pedal sounds amazing with a amp just slightly overdriven. The pedal's distortion is so good it will compete with most boutique amps front end and then get you a clean sound too with a single channel amp.
Thanks for the great videos Pete, been pulling my hair out on deciding which distortion pedals are for me but your videos keep me sane. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually and these videos are fantastic for picky guys like myself who don't have the benefit of a music store with a broad selection of equipment to try. I truly appreciate this as I've wasted both time and money looking in wrong directions. Hope you continue to be a great influence.
Great demo Pete, They both sound really good. I after 5 listens I think I like the OD1x best. And Pete I gotta say man that was some fantastic playing.
gy the DA does, adding thickness to my Yamaha Pacifica 112V neck pup tone..., by the way the Da is aawsome..., Digital pedals...Solid State amps... aye recipe for disaster? hopefully not, Cheers ; Kimmo
Best demo yet. I really needed to hear that to make my decision. I will be purchasing both pedals. You are truly an asset to youtube. Thanks Pete. By the way i purchased your music on itunes. Awesome stuff!!!
Not usually a fan of Boss Drive pedals, but both were great and I can see the DS1x being paired with an EQ for massive sounds. Again, superb demo Pete, I'll make sure I call you for an audition when I put the touring band together :0p
Awesome playing as always! I bought one after watching this video and It did sound great. I like the way it makes the sound of your guitar so balanced almost no need for quick flick to treble mode on my guitar to emphasize higher registers for solo. It is very dynamic, i leave it on all the time. I just roll off the volume knob for clean sound. Tone control works great for using different amps. seems to me there is a presence feature integrated with the high knob. Ds1x has the low end chug im looking for with drive pedals and it doesn't sound thin on high volumes.
You have the most professional, laid back way of posting demos I have ever seen. When I see a video by Pete Thorn I immediately watch it. Your work with Chris Cornell and Ian Thornley are out of this world. Your choice of amps, pedals and guitars are of the highest caliber of taste!! I have been playing guitar for Thirty years and I would die for the sweet tones that you produce from your amps, guitars and fingertips!! Ok,with the compliments out of the way I use a Maxon OD 808 overdrive pedal which I think is best but how do you think the Boss overdrive compares? Have ever even played through a Maxon OD 808? Anyways looking forward to your lessons!! 😃
That OD pedal sounds great man,the distortion does as well but I never use any distortion pedals, but that OD pedal,I definitely would buy one of those.
Hi Pete...Have tryed bouth pedals together and blend them like for example nova pedal from Tc works ? Would be intresting to hear how it works together...thanks for you videos..👍
Really excellent explanations and synopsis's, obviously someone with a ton of expereince with different pedals etc having been tried/used etc, *** the best person to give opinion on gear on you tube! When I look up produc t reviews I a dd Pete Thorn to the search list, best 'opinion and advice by yonks' Thanks again brother
Nice review. Thanks for all your work and I love your playing style. Sometimes I wish your demo songs would keep going but I know you have to stop to discuss the product. Keep up the good work , I'm a big fan !! Thanks
You're playing very well! The hardware is less than 20% of your overall sound. You have sensitive ear and good guitar skills. Thanks Pete for this video!
very nice demo pete..... a question ... if i have a overdrive and a distortion pedal, which one i put first in the line ... ? ... and why ??... i have 4 example...OD-- DIST ---> AMP
Im starting to sound like a broken record here, I know, but the way you play, your style and technique is just insanely rock solid. Truly inspirational. As for the pedals... theres something about the OD1x that sounds odd to me. Very airy or something. Odd in a good way. The DS1x has that instant wow factor. I really like that one. Cool demo as always. Thank you, sir.
I didn't know you can use amps with studio monitors. sounds like a cab. the ds-1 x and od-1 x are really great sounding. but I don't need it coz I'm happy with my standard ds-1
I'm kind of reluctant to buying a pedal based on these demos. Not because they're bad. In fact I think they are probably the best demos out there. The problem is that almost anything sounds good on Pete's rig. That being said. These are demos of how good a piece of gear can sound given that you have Pete's gear and hands.
Looking for a pedal I can use for moderate distortion on rhythm work but then will also work OK when I kick in a Big Muff for lead work (similar to what j Mascis likes to do with the Muff boosted for leads). Any recommendations? Love the Big Muff but it doesn't always play well with other pedals.
Thanks Pete for these outstanding demos! Cool to hear all different kinds of guitars through the same pedals. Your playing is very inspiring to me as well!
6 years later, these two boss pedals are still my fave dirt pedals for great tone, good job pete!
Love the OD1X.
I have this one and sounds so good. I used it as a clean boost as well, just a question. Is there any other clean boost pedals better than this?

Getting ds1x this week, hope it cleans to get od3 like blues tones lowering guitar volume

I still have my original DS-1 from back in 1980. Good to see Boss still in the running.

I Honestly feel like your playing has become extraordinarily dynamic and harmonically rich in your recent demos. Thanks.
Hey thanks!! i appreciate that a lot.
And almost a decade later (2023) and he keeps getting better!
@Joe-mz6dc Yes! I was gonna say, as great as he was back then, he's even better now 💥
to this day, these two pedals are my favorite tones pete ever demonstrated boss rules and pete does to
7 years of this vid and OD1x still my fav (would like to buy a Plumes soon too)

Pete Thorn Man you have expert precision. Really consistent playing!
The Belgian’s make some great tone and the best part, you can make some tasty waffles too, which is nice.
I'm STILL trying to dial in my vacuum cleaner. It's definitely not as easy as people think, these home appliances.
This guy could sell unpolished turds with his demos! Seriously, though, this is a great demo of the DS1X; a buddy of mine has one and I'm pretty impressed to hear an unmodded Boss pedal sound so good. Definitely warrants a good look. Thanks, Pete!
tonepoet thanks!
Actually, he'd probably sell more if he did it with a patch over his eye like pirate.
Kelley White
Seriously. He should wear an eye patch. It would be different, don't you think?
That ds1x was impressive. Was not expecting that
Beautifully composed melodies that showcase the power of these two BOSS pedals. Cheers! 😊
any pedal on your hands ... become in a letal weappon .. you are the top master Pete .. congratulation man!! great talent

the ds1x not so much, but i sold the od1x and want it back

Thanks Pete

Great demo, look at the way Peter hits the guitar, both hand make incredible sound.
I tried the OD-1X in the store and was happy to hear it sounded very good there as well as in your demo. I'll be picking one up soon.

Wow! I loved the way you rocked that Gibson 335!!
the bit with the 335 was AWESOME! by the end of all these demos i have stopped caring about the product and am just watching you play.

That Suhr T is to die for. The new shape headstock, arm contour, the colour etc... !
it is a real cool guitar! It's cool to get the headstock painted body color, except the little shelf- get that done black. Good lookin!

I wish I could like this video over and over again. Really loving those clean ups and palm muting. It's as what Pete described
great in depth review - very helpful - cheers
Wow, these sound great!
Thanks Pete for these outstanding demos! Cool to hear all different kinds of guitars through the same pedals. Your playing is very inspiring to me as well!
thanks!
Hey Pete, killer demo as always! Curious how you think the OD1x would pair with the Badger 30?
really well I'd guess!
oooooh that fender strat sings soooo well!
Dude can flat out play. Makes everything sound like the Holy Grail.
That OD-1x is a killer pedal.
