There’s a CPM-3V version of the SRK. I wonder how that would’ve done. And it’s still cheaper than the APO-1.
It's still cheaper? That's bananas! I love 3V and it's miles better than aus8

There in no comparison there. Comparing CS 3V with AUS8 is like comparing Ferrari with Huindai🙃😉

That was a gentle burn of the APO1, thanks for recommending a better knife for 1/3 of the price! You guys are the most hilarious nice guys on youtube.
She trashed fallkniven A1 pro. Then made an absolute shit version of that exact knife....
For $145 you can get the Cold Steel SRK 3V , and that would destroy that APO-1 .
Yes. SK5 is a better steel than aus8, but 3V is on another level 👍

@@thenoobflutisttmearraperec10 aus 8 of cold steel has better heat treat, dsnt compare to other brands
I’ve never heard of Lilly before watching these reviews but If someone’s charging that much for junk I don’t trust them.
I don't trust anybody who looks like sid from ice age.
She’s a good youtuber and her info is decent. She and survival mike were some of my entry points to prepping and knives
All the problems could be solved by just upgrading the materials
Survival lilly most definitely knows her stuff, one of the best survival youtubers out there, cause she is actually out there doing stuff, watch her for a decade. As for the knife, i agree it's too expensive, but she got a solid point for chosing aus 8 for a survival blade. She advocated for aus 8 for years, way before she designed the knife. She explains her reasons well, it's not sn edc knife, in survival situations the way she explains and trains them, edge retention is not important. What is, is toughness, minimal chipping, no broken tip and corrosion resistance. Mosr knife guys are nerds who don't actually use their stuff for real. As for sk5, it's ok for the price, it will break on you though, check joex for these tests
Survival lilly designed the knife based on these criteria. Toughness of the steel, the tip (important for getting out maggots of wood, bowdrilling) and chip resistance which is a problem for field sharpening. It's also known that aus 8 doesn't have the best edge retention, but for extended survival it's more important to have easy maintenance. Also aus 8 tends to bend instead of breaking. As for the handle, no clue, don't own the knife, too expensive admittedly. I own several survival blades. Fällkniven a1 (total disappointment imo) the srk sk5 (i would immediately exchange it for the old aus8 version), a gerber prodigy, it's good but too small, and a gerber strongarm, very decent.
On behalf of everyone who watches this video, I want to take this opportunity to thank Mikkie, from the bottom of our collective hearts, with all sincerity and humility, for wearing shorts while he was in that dress. Seriously. If he hadn't... well, let's just say, the result would NOT have been pretty.
Also, I was surprised to see that Mikkie's biceps are getting almost as big as Maarten's. He must be working out like a beast these days.
8:15 I had no idea Maarten was a ballet dancer.
Hahahaha to be honest, if I hadn't worn the shorts you would still need a binocular to see anything interesting. The dingus is tiny. Cheers mate!!
@@DutchBushcraftKnives I have to shave my pubic hairs to find it, to be able to take a tinkle 😕.
🤣😂
@@DutchBushcraftKnives "the dingus" 😂😂
A lot of people don’t know this but that intro was actual footage of Survival Lillies morning routine.
I have made knives for 50 plus years and I find both of these to be far more important than steel type. 1. Proper heat treat heat treat is everything. Lily's knife bent as I would want a survival knife to do a bent knife is still usable a broken knife is well broken. Lilly may want to have her heat treaters take it up one degree. I run it 59 to 60 RC fairly hard for AUS-8 2. How the knife is ground. I like zero ground convex for all my knives. 3. Last of all steel type. AUS-8 is one of my favorite budget steels and is a Japanese annealed version of 440-B. When properly heat treated because on any knife heat treat is paramount and combined with proper edge edge and blade geometry ( all my knives have a zero ground convex edge) it will perform very well. Steels like 52100 and Elmax are very sensitive to heat treat and I find AUS-8 to be also. If you take the time to vary your edge angles using a Lansky or some system where you can set a fairly exact angle you will find on any steel that different angles can produce quite different levels of edge holding. Tuning the edge to the steel is the last step in A. Good heat treat B. Good geometry and C. Proper edge angle for the type of steel and thickness of the blade you have made or bought.
So I've been thinking a little bit about Lilly's APO-1.
First off. The price point for a knife with AUS8. I've had a few knives in that steel and I happen to have one of the SRKs with that steel that is also from the days when it was made in Japan. It is a great steel for the price... And that was one of the charm's with it. Lilly takes this away pricing it at $150.
She has been very critical of other knives in the past (Fällkniven S1 to name one). To be perfectly honest I believe she took a shortcut with the choice of steel. She is very likely not well versed in the different steel kinds and as such, instead of reinventing the wheel, she just plain took the steel her favourite knife uses. SRK in AUS8.
Secondly, she capitalizes further on a proven design. Sure, there are some changes but I think as a testament to her lack of creativity is the sheath. It is almost a straight copy with a her knife's name on it rather than SRK.
To summarize. Overpriced copycat. Poor style.
Hit the nail right on the head with that just don't tell her fans any of that or you'll see an army of white knights to defend her overpriced knife. Fun fact about her knife when they sent out "review samples" of her knife mysteriously all the reviews left out the fact that the sheath actually rolled the edge every time you took it in and out of the sheath but that wasn't a problem...people ignored it and just gave the excuse of "i got another sheath made so its fine now" note this about the reviews they were sent to people who were friends with her in most cases so quite a bit of bias was already instilled.
I'm sorry she hurt your feelings over the Fallknivens, but she was dead on. I've owned 3 Fallknivens. Terribly small handles compared with the SRK. Brittle tips and edges that chip far too easy. Way overpriced compared with a San Mai III SRK. Ok sheaths at best. The A1 and S1's are really cool looking and carve really well, but they don't hold up to real world bushcraft and survival tasks. They are safe queens for well off Boomers and Gen Xers who use them to boost their egos. Nothing more.
Regarding AUS8 and her price, I actually agree with you on that point. A Taiwan made blade made of AUS8 for $150 is just too much. I think her intent was good-- use a steel that is tough and works, and improve on the SRK (stronger tip, stronger handles, exposed pommel, bow drill divot on the handle, etc), but the knife is too expensive for the aforementioned reasons. If she made this knife for $80 to $90, I think it would sell well and would be a good deal at that price.
true. i just discovered this knife and cant find out why is all the hype about. You can have falknifen (simmilar style, BETTER steel.) And the style itself... she claims she did this knife for herself... Such tiny hands, and such big knife? Hah, i suppose it is all fake. Overpriced. for 50 dollars it would be nice, just like cold steel srk sk5 steel.
@@jimlahey5623 sk5 is a good steel, tough as nails but yes her knife is a ripoff and a direct copycat. I'd also take any advice from her when using knives with a massive grain of salt. In some of her 'knife review' videos, she barely grips a lot of the knives and goes at them with a novice technique and has some unsafe knife handling practices...... big no
*I was disappointed with my APO-1; the knife was OK BUT every time it is drawn from the sheath OR placed into the sheath, the already mediocre edge become more and more dull - the sheath is designed to rub the flat plastic directly against the edge, thus dulling it more every time it is used. It was a waste of money for me.*
Lol, she cloned the SRK sheath so well that she even copied the dulling of the edge feature.
You better be careful with the sundress, I can't afford child support.
There are so many SRK variants that in the future, it's safe to assume they will make a lightsaber version of the SRK.
Props to cold steel for making an srk for everyone’s budget and needs

😁😁😁😁
Shannon Dixon Buck’s 420HC is quite impressive,at least for 420HC.their heat treatment of their 420HC is far superior than most companies..while 420HC leaves a lot to be desired in edge retention it is quite tough,it sharpens easily and it has pretty decent corrosion resistance..I’ve personally beat the hell out of several knives in 420HC(Buck 119,Gerber Prodigy and a Gerber StrongArm) and never had any of them fail on me.the Buck 119 in 420HC is also a $50 knife.for a knife in its price range it is still a pretty solid knife and definitely earned its reputation..with that being said, now Buck has their 110 and 112 folders available in S35VN+micarta as well as their 119 and 120 fixed blades

Lilly hardened the AUS8 up to 57/58 HRC which is too much for a poor budget steel
Probably that's why it makes chips and is hard to sharpen
Reliable manufacturer like Cold Steel or Ontario harden it near 55 HRC, YT survival experts think they've got immense power...
No, AUS8, like any stainless, is harder to sharpen than high carbon steels. And 57/58 is a typical Rockwell hardness for AUS8. 55 is too soft. 55 is more appropriate on axes, hawks and hatchets, and also on longer bowie style blades that need a lower RC to reduce the possibilty of the longer blade breaking.
I watched some of Lilly's videos. She decided to make her knife after her knife tip broke in an island survival video. That knife was a Falkniven F-1 if I remember correctly. It was right after she caught a crab.....

I never found Lilly attractive.............until this video
Man i’ve watched this video so many times i still laugh 😄😂. Specially when you whispering “Lillyyyyyyyyu” and Lilly is going mad in background is soo funny 😂
That was a little immature boys but what Survival Lilly made was a knife she liked in a meh Steel. Tbh it’s a knife that is a Jack of all trades but master of none. To me I prefer the carbon tool steels and semi stainless PM steels like 3V or 4V but my absolute favourite Is Z-wear. I have a miller bros custom survival knife in it and it’s indestructible especially with a 7mm spine. I love it and I’ve took it in rainforests to deserts and it’s never let me down yet. Z-wear is better than 3V or 4V. My favourite steels though are K390 and CPM M4. My favourite low alloyed carbon steel is 52100 and if you heat treat it right it’s an amazing steel better than 1095 or CRV80.
I looked at getting the SRK forever but ended up settling on the Gerber Strongarm. Still might pick one up
The SKR used to be literally indestructible but they changed the steel like 3 times and you can't hammer it through a tree stump like you used too...
Exactly Sir Sir. The older ones were excellent. The SK5 version's tip does not hold up. Of course, these guys were only trying to hurt Lily because she's a competitor on RUclips, but that's besides the point.
