Gotta say... I have them double dip my Italian beef and then I just eat it out of the wrapped paper. Yes it's messy. There's nothing this good is Portillo's Italian beef double-dipped!

You are usually asked what level of dip you want, along with whether you want sweet or sport peppers. All of these foods with sauce are sloppy and eaten with the hands. Using utensils is so "European"!

Locals trash Giordano's and call it "tourist pizza". Portillos also falls into the "touristy" category to me as well, but both are TERRIFIC... If somebody discourages you from going to either, don't listen to them. Go, they are both excellent. Everybody has their favorite local joint. My advice is start start with those 2 and use those as a base to determine what other places you prefer. I've had all the popular pizza joints, pizzeria due, pizanos, Lou Malnatis... They're all fine and different in their own way. ENJOY!

Having grown up in Chicago and going back several times a year and eating for 64 years
1: Never eat a dipped (wet is an East coast thing) Italian Beef with a fork, learn the beef haunch.
2: If you're over 5 years old don't put ketchup on a hotdog, you're likely going to be laughed at.
3: Portillos is fine but try any number of independent family owned beef, pizza hotdog joints scattered all over the city and don't forget to try a maxwell street polish.

Oak Park (west suburb, I call it the Hyde Park of the westside) but good food.
Most of these places are southside, in real communities...be reminded that Chicago is diverse as a city...but segregated by the people...due to the history. Do freak out....we have some rough areas...but none of these places are in real rough areas... Be cool...Lyft and Urbers will take u to any of these places. Yes, breaded steak with red sauce! Hard to find, but my most favorite Chicago food. First had it at the Ricobene’s location on South Cicero (near Burbank). Found it later at a place in Hodgkins, but can't find where that was anymore (left in 1997). The old suburbs did have some great traditional Chicago food.

I'm from a city an hour north of Los Angeles. Chicago has my favorite food scene in the country! Though I haven't been to New Orleans. Chicago's food scene is distinctive, with regional food. Something that almost everywhere in America lacks.
My favorite is that classic Chicago deep dish pizza. There are so many good places to go for it. While I prefer Loui Malnati's; Giordano's, Pizzeria Uno, Geno's East are so good too. But the truth is, some of the best Chicago style pizzas are found in mom and pops places, that don't get advertised. Also in suburban Chicago, a large chain called Nancy's can compete with any of the most popular chains in Chicago.
For roasted beef, Al's has actually been rated better than Portillo's a few times. I prefer Al's. But either way; its great at both places baby! I'm not into the Chicago style hot dog. But Chicago has some of the best Puerto Rican and Cuban restaurants in the country. And very underrated hamburger and barbecue scene. They also have a very diverse and good beer scene, for those interested.
Research where to go before arriving, you won't be disappointed. Then the city itself has so much to offer.

Pub style is a thin crust, but not cracker style thin, cut into squares rather than pie slices. great options are Candlite on Western Ave in the Rogers park Neighborhood, Vito and Nick's at 84th and Pulaski, Aurelio's (various locations), Marie's at 4129 Lawrence Ave, Home Run Inn on south Western Ave, Piece on North Ave, and Home Slice.
