I totally agree with you regarding how "mint" it should look.
In my opinion, a perfectly vintage rc car, has all the parts that the car was built from originally. Scratches is a part of the patina.
One other thing about vintage stuff. This is alot about memories. The search after that old child excitement we had.
A part of the history is in matter og fact, that we drow these cars to the ground. We really had fun. Many of us had just that one car.
Probably not the money for all the spare parts and changing old worn out tires. We just kept going and adapting to the circumstances. Many of us maked new parts for them, or glued it together to hold up only half a battery pack. That was my childhood. That is why I run all my vintage cars.

What a great buggy. A good friend of mine had one of these when growing up. I ran a Raider ARR and he ran the Madcap. I always thought his buggy was better but, I never told him that when we were kids. This buggy definitely has a lot of potential. I was able to find a NIB spare body kit with original stickers to help fully restore mine to mint condition. The only issue is the tinted window stickers which are already lifting. I don't like how it is 3 pieces but it is what it is. I"ve been tempted to lift them off and used the MCI black window boarders and spray tint it. I'm going to leave it for now and maybe in the future do that.

My first car back in '89 and I still have it, although its now a bit like 'Triggers Broom'. Originally built with my dad the front of the chassis cracked on its 2nd outing after my brother crashed it front first into a kerb. I created an aluminium plate that sat between the front bumper mount and the main chassis, the car then ran like this until it was restored a few years ago.
This car was epic, I had uprated the motor and had hi-caps at the time all round and would leave my friends Vanquish standing over our local BMX track.
I wrote the Wiki page on this thing a while back.
    Couple of weak areas:
Chassis prone to cracking around the screw holes at the front and at the rear around the gearbox mount.
Gearbox ball diff was prone to slipping, using the extra washer kinda helped a little.
Gearbox housing also prone to splitting along with the plastic long nut chassis connectors (replace with Astute alu ones). Also had issues with the rear suspension mount screw holes splitting, along with the tops of the front shock towers.
some upgrades possible without turning it into an astute\madcap hybrid:
    Full Ball race
    Acto Pink or equiv
    Aluminium Gearbox plate
    Alu spur gear holder
    Oil filled shocks
GRP Shick towers from the Astute or Super Astute
Larger front wheels (Wild One) to get better turn in
    Universal Joints for the rear
I used an old list of madcap and astute parts to creat a Jamie Booth type replica earlier this year, it came out a very capable car. I restored my original using spare parts and some of the upgrades above.

... and don't forget, considering any construction that came afterwards, the ridiculously complicated ball differential with three sets of balls (21 total) in two different sizes, adding up to a whopping 39 parts for that mechanical piece of art alone ;-).
Trying to get one back alive as well, and apart from some scratches and a broken chassis plate near the rear suspension, the main issue also is a really poor paintjob done by the previous owner. Looking forward to your solution.
