  • @helgar791
    @helgar791 3 года назад +44

    To understand this song you need to have lived through a bittersweet relationship of unrequited love. That means you have to be of a certain age. Yet it's difficult for people to move past their recency bias'. When viewed objectively for interpretation and the production on the record, no other record, which would be a cover, comes near this version. This is a woman of experience that has been through something, and it shows. This version is the benchmark, the heavyweight champion. All other versions are just contenders.

    Chod, You'll love her "Something To Talk About", "Love Sneakin' Up On You", "Love Me Like A Man" and "Angel From Montgomery". She paid her dues with the blues, and broke thru big time in 1991 with the first song!! She is known for her voice and slide guitar.

  • @ebonywahine

    Bonnie is a blues woman from her heart and was mentored and played with Mississippi Fred McDowell, who was a true bluesman of the "Hill country blues" tradition. Her first and and onward are gems. Some of my faves are the early to mid 70s(Give it Up, Home Plate, Takin' My Time, Sweet Forgiveness) but you really can find great cuts all the way thru her catalogue, I saw her gig many times back then when I lived in Nashville and often saw her around and about the bohemian/musicians/artists end of town.. One of my favorites ever!

  • @jimmcevers9443
    @jimmcevers9443 3 года назад +15

    Underrated blues player and singer! Almost anything off her "Luck Of the Draw" or "Nick Of Time" albums is worth a listen. She has a fairly large catalogue and released her first album in 1971 (yeah, it just hit me; 50 years ago). Her father (John Raitt) was a Broadway/Movie musical star (Oklahoma/Carousel among others) so she is genetically well equipped. Enjoy!!!

    I've been a Bonnie Raitt fan for forty years and this is not the first song I would chose to introduce her with.
    What I'm saying is that this woman is not only a great vocalist but she is never without her Stratocaster and a slide on her finger, in other words she is an even more awesome award winning blues slide guitarist, she is a blues and soul queen... worth diving into her library.

    Bonnie has such a warm, wonderful voice. She can rock out, sing the blues, or break your heart like this. Nick of Time is one of my favorite songs. Angel from Montgomery, Thing Called Love, Rock Steady. As others have said- the ever-fab Bruce Hornsby on the piano- worth listening to in his own right.

    Bruce Hornsby played some hella fine piano on that track too. The song written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin and recorded by American singer Bonnie Raitt for her eleventh studio album Luck of the Draw (1991). The idea for the song came to Reid while reading an article about a man arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't." The song was rewritten many times before being finalized, months later. "We wrote, most every week, in Mike's basement," Shamblin told Peter Cooper in an interview with the Nashville Tennessean. "And we'd worked on this song for more than six months. One day, he said, 'Come up to the living room,' where his piano was. He sat down and started playing this melody, and it was one of the most moving pieces of music I'd heard. I mean, it hit me in a hard way ... Instantly, I knew it was the best thing I'd ever been a part of."

    Co-writer Mike Reid received his B.A. in Music from Penn State where he was an All-American defensive tackle and later a first round draft pick for the Cincinnati Bengals where he was an All-Pro defensive lineman. An injury shortened his career but gave him the opportunity to put all his efforts into music. Reid formed a band and started by playing at a Holiday Inn across the river from Cincinnati. He has written 12 number #1 singles and won a 1984 Grammy for Best Country Song "Stranger in My House" recorded by Ronnie Milsap. Mike had a #1 hit himself "Walk on Faith" in 1990. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.

    Shout out to ya Mama & a high-five🖐!! She's got excellent taste!! Bonnie's been dubbed the Daughter of the Blues & the Queen of the Slide Guitar. She's in the generation between the elderly & deceased black blues greats from the Mississippi Delta to Memphis to Chicago & the SRV & Jimmie Vaughan generation. As a result, she's played & sang w/ a ton of incredible musicians from both of those generations, w/ the older gen being her biggest influencers. In fact, the list of musicians/bands that she's collaborated with is stunning & staggering...& varied by genre. However, she's a blueswoman at heart...thru & thru. There's not a musician dead or alive who didn't/wouldn't absolutely jump at the chance to get to play with her. She's that good, that highly respected, & that legendary. Sooo....just stick wit me😂 cuz I know all her bestest songs that I'll be tossing your way in the future! Let me start w/ one that is live, has good audio quality, & also has one of my other favorite blues singers from her generation in it: Bonnie Raitt & Delbert McClinton, Good Man, Good Woman on The Arsenio Hall Show. Thanks my friend! (Don't forget my shout out to Mama!!😉)

    Old guy here - first heard Bonnie in 1972 and have loved her ever since. Have to admit though - lost track of her sometime during the late 80's. This is one of my all time favorite songs. Bruce Hornsby on piano added to the beauty of this performance. His piano on The Way It Is (sampled by Tupac) is worth a listen - great piano chorus and riffs.

      @Steve Wilkins That's fine - I've done the same thing in the past. And are you aware of Angelina Jordan, a phenomenal young (15) singer from Norway? If not, listen first to her do the old classic What a Difference a Day Makes when she was 8 or 9 (she has big roses in her hair and is interviewed in Norwegian before singing), and follow with A Million Miles, released earlier this year (black and white live version). This should give you a good idea of what she's about. Cheers.

    Yes we were so blessed to have the music and the SIMPLICITY of that time.... Although we were dealing with nuclear weapons (monthly drills of hiding under our desks because I lived 10 miles away from the largest power station in North America), so an argument between mom and dad was not as marriage destructive as now.... Hahahaha

    This was my go to song when my heart was broken. If you want a song of her's for contrast, try Let's Give Them Something to Talk About.

    My favorite side of Bonnie is when she gets down on a funky beat and rips on the slide guitar, like on “Slow Ride”. The woman is legendary - I can’t think of one song of hers I don’t like.

      Her duet with Delbert McClinton Good Man Good Woman is awesome too.

      @@brewswillis9783 Yeah, that one has that kind of funky beat she loves to groove with. She sure had a slough of great duets. Saw her perform twice and once was starstruck when our paths converged at a deli counter ordering lunch.

    Love her version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home". you don't see it in this Chod but she is a phenomenal slide guitar player as well.
    have seen her with Eric Clapton and Jeff Healy and held no back seat to either of them carrying her axe.

    You should hear her sing John Pine's song "Angle from Montgomery". I also love her song "Home". Also her name is pronounced RATE.
