Interesting ?!? 11/10 !!! You, sir, articulated every part of the craziness of this particular story that led me to believe that...like Santa Claus... people would eventually tell me that all this "religion stuff" was just cultural storytelling, and that no one actually believed any of this nonsense. Alas, I grew up and no such disclosure happened. Worse, I'm learning through many RUclips channels, the immense trauma and even perversion that beLIEving this stuff causes. I truly believe that absolute faith in the stories of religion really does cause mental disorders. And the sooner we exorcise (word deliberately chosen) ourselves of the imaginary constructs religions put into our minds, the sooner we can work on overcoming our human foibles, as we age and learn about ourselves, plus cultivate empathy within ourselves and others.
What's "amazing" is that you still think your 20 minutes is the equivalent of volumes of historical exegetical works from *_Masters._* You're still a hack.
@@MindShift-Brandon As a former believer, this passage/account was one of the more difficult to defend. As I stated in the comments, it took me to the differences between tests vs temptations. I was able to put together a minimal defense but that’s exactly what it was…minimal. Thanks for all the hard work you do to make these videos available!
Christian often say that Jesus was tempted in everyway during this time, but like he was only tempted 3 times, there is no way that can cover all of human's "temptations." He wasn't even tempted sexually, and Christians love complaining about sexual temptations.
Well i think they think he was tempted throughout all of his human time but still its incredibly easy to prove he wasnt tempted in everyway. He was never tempted to leave his wife as an example. Im actually doing a video on all the ways that fails soon too
I never really understood what Satan's demands were if you were to worship him. He wants your "soul," but what does he do with it? Where does he put it? Where the hell is it in the first place?
@@zapveresepa1 He wants to humiliate god. The bible states Satan hates us. He was jealous. He wants to be better than god. He wants your soul and takes it Hell with him. Its actually all in the bible. I get sometimes its hard to read, but most old manuscripts are. God speaks of heavens. Physical we live in, the atmosphere, a second heaven and its hell, and Gods heaven.
@@dontliveinsin Which honestly makes him pretty much like Yahweh in that regard. The thing Yahweh finds important enough to put first onto the stone tablets was that he wanted to not just be the god you held as the highest, but that you didn't even hold any other god to any sort of position.
My favorite story about an individual who resists temptation is the story of Diogenes when Alexander The Great comes up to him and tells him to ask him for whatever he wants and he will give it to him, and Diogenes replies with, "move, you're blocking my sunlight" now that's a badass story about someone resisting temptation XD
My favourite Jesus/Satan version: Jesus had resisted the first two temptations and was looking pretty smug. Then Satan put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a sheet of bubble wrap. Jesus, of course could not resist and began bursting the bubbles while denouncing Satan as a sneaky bastard.
@@MindShift-Brandon Yeshua: "Do not test your lord!" Hasatanael: "This is literally my Jo-you told me to tempt you. Yeshua: "Repent for your sins." Hasatanael: "What sins? I am not a descendant of Adam." Yeshua: "Do not-" Hasatanael: "I'm still getting paid for this, right?
Dude I know Alexander loved him and all…but man, I would’ve been like ,,And now u drunkard, I shall take your eyesight, for so you shall never see the sun again Diogenes!“ Then I’d chain him to a sunny rock for the rest of his life, riddle me this Diogenes. I wouldn’t do that but I really do not like Diogenes…If that wasn’t clear.
When I read the three temptations, it made me feel very small and very weak. Rather than inspiring me to make sacrifices, it shamed me from appreciating all the abundance I enjoy in comparison to earlier generations. As I grew up, I learned that the food I eat has beneficiary effects that prevent me from destroying myself. We need - not WANT, NEED - proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to stay healthy and strong. I am also dependent on a medication that prevents me from having seizures. I admire the fast that you undertook, Brandon, but that would be something impossible for me. Not out of weakness, but for the sake of staying healthy. As far as I'm concerned, there is no sin to being well-fed and healthy.
As for in my case, im an ectomorph and work 9 hours a day 6x1.. physically. I NEED to eat all the time, im 1.81m and 76kg, cant even grow past 80kg because im always working
This is why in some cultures being fat is (was before western influence) considered a good thing - you are fed well, your children are fed well, you must have wealth. Well rounded women “traditionally built” are beautiful and likely to be fertile because they are considered healthy. There is a happy medium of course but it is interesting fact to consider.
Your body has literally evolved to go for extended periods without food. And fasting, if not done to excess, and as long as sufficient liquids are taken, has proven benefits to health.
This is why Kryptonite was written into the Superman Mythos. An immortal being has nothing to overcome resulting in no stories to tell. (This is why Batman is so great, he has no super powers, often gets smashed and pulverized but is able to pick himself up and get back into the fight. We humans love these type of stories) Satan is Jesus' Kryptonite. Take Satan out of the bible and there are no stories to tell. Its weird that the christian god is somehow both mortal and immortal. Logic be damned.
To be fair most great superman stories are not about fighting but hope, his relationship to the world, his family and Lois. Jesus can't be written with beautiful family dynamics because that would be "too human." Superman > Jesus anyday.
@@abram730 There was no Moloch. The word is thought by most scholars to be referring to a specific kind of sacrifice made to any deity, not the name of a deity itself. The term eventually got confused by translators, who thought "Moloch" was the name of a god.
apologists would say "oh, but he was in human form meaning that he could be tempted" however that fails quickly. the time Jesus spent on earth as a human would be like week holiday compared to how long he existed. so there isnt really any reason to be tempted for something you are going to own in a short time. And it is like lending your car to someone for a short time, only for your neighbour to tempt you into taking it back sooner.
@@Shattered3582 It doesn't really matter if he was human, what matters if he had a human mind or a God's mind. If he knew he was God, the temptations don't make sense.
@@dontliveinsin Tempting angels in Heaven is silly, too, right there in the seat of God's power. Then again, if God is omnipotent, he would have known what Satan was doing anywhere--like in the Garden of Eden. He wouldn't have come down and needed to ask Adam and Eve where they were hiding, or what they'd done...
The constant "how is this a temptation?" question always makes me shake my head with the "how is this a sacrifice?" When Jesus gets to rule everything and pass judgement on everyone for a few bad days of torture and death. The other myth recommendations at the end are great stories! Another great video
"How is this a sacrifice?" Good question. From what I understand about ancient religions that practiced animal and even human sacrifice, that sacrifice had to be conducted in a certain place, at a certain time, by certain authorized people, and that everyone around, from the participants to the onlookers, understood that what was going on was a sacrifice and not just a routine killing. Jesus was not sacrificed in the Temple, he was not sacrificed by a high priest, and it was definitely not understood by the Romans who sentenced and crucified him that they were conducting a sacrifice rather than a political execution. Pilate would have known what a sacrifice entailed. It's very clear from the Gospel accounts that he did not consider his actions to be that of a priest and that Jesus was his sacrificial victim. I'll say it again, to be considered a sacrifice, everyone involved has to know upfront that this is a sacrifice; it has to be publicly announced as such and carried out in a recognized fashion. There's a big difference between killing a chicken for Sunday dinner and killing it as part of an Afro-Caribbean religious ritual. And guess which one gets people more upset?
Here is my answer Jesus doesn't know he is the son of God he has to take that on faith. He is tempted because he has human feelings like in the desert he does feel hunger and fear because he has a human body
Would it not have been more metal for Jesus to turn the stones into bread, invite the Devil to eat first, then turn them back into stone while the Devil breaks his teeth?
Ending the story in the desert would have ended the g(r)ift of religion...a g(r)ift that keeps on giving through tithes and donations to this very day.
Why three temptations? Well, when Ridley Scott was asked why there were three explosions of the Nostromo at the end of Alien, he said: Because three is always better.
Sin is defined as going against the will of God. So it's a bit pointless to "tempt" God himself to sin. If Jesus had "given in" to all those temptations he could have eaten an entire bakery's worth of bread, assumed control of huge space empires and hurled himself down from Mt Everest and it would be perfectly fine because it would be in accordance with the will of God. It's like bragging that you won a game of chess against yourself. Well, d'uh.
If the show has started, ran and ends with God then why should such a brief interlude as Satan tempting Jesus to sin matter in the greater schema of things? FYI the universe will last an additional 100 trillion yrs and Jesus returning "soon" verily/truly sometime in-between. Ok then lets say in some alternate time line Satan managed to win Jesus over to Satan's side and therefore Satan won. Then what was supposed to happen? The world and all it's inhabitants turn evil? God getting angry and destroying the world for yet another unnecessary reset? Such stories found in the bible would make just a bit more sense if Jesus would of returned soon and not soon as in around 100 trillion years soon.
@@scienceexplains302 According to Nicean Christian doctrine Jesus is wholly human and also wholly God. Every Christian who had different ideas about that got exterminated, so that's what we got stuck with.
It's almost like Jesus was never intended to be interpreted as God himself, but rather as a pious human prophet who was rewarded for his faith by being resurrected and brought to heaven to sit at his Lord's right hand. It's almost like Trinitarianism is a completely nonsensical post-biblical doctrine that makes everything about the Jesus story absurd and pointless.
Amen, brother! I truly believe that the development of the tri-omni concept was the dumbest decision early believers ever made. It causes way more problems and raises way more questions.
It has just occurred to me in my 52 years as a committed evangelical Christian that the Bible and the Gospel do not consider personal recreation and entertainment to be legitimate lifestyle components and activities of the Christian life, components and activities that have intrinsic value and worth in and of themselves without first needing to be justified by some Bible verses as serving the 'kingdom of God'. Christians are made to feel guilty and uneasy about personal recreation and entertainment, that it is a sign of some kind of decadence or backsliding or indifference to the 'kingdom of God'.

Every temptation God in bodily form could possibly face is one that he decided to allow himself to face. And for several reasons it is not impressive that he “defeated” them. The biggest one of all probably being that obviously he’s not going to create a challenge too big to fail, because he considers himself and the endless worship of himself to be the greatest thing of all, and because he’s infinitely knowing, so he would know how to create a super duper tough but not actually in any way tough challenge that wouldn’t in any way threaten the thing he loves so much, which is himself
And at the end, the angels "comforted" him. Yeah, right...wink, wink, nudge nudge...checking if he's "clean cut". The whole story is written by silly men with superstitious minds.
Yep, God in his omniscience knew before he created the universe that He (as his own son) would pass the temptation. This vid reminded me of how I read the bible as a believer. It was like I was so focused on trying to get the 'goodie' from this holy book and determine what I was supposed to believe and do to be saved, that the problematic passages were just glossed over somehow. It's like I filed them away in the back while I read. Makes me wonder if the belief system itself somehow insulates the believer from examining any of these passages beyond a certain depth. Great video.

All because of war, slavery and truly awful human rights violations. And of course you lie 24/7, 365 days a year, every year about not having a clue about any of that Does God tell you to do that? Does it have a good reason? Do you really think objectively?
Not to be a downer. A student at the Bible College I attended, thought god was telling him to kill his baby because it was "demon possed." Unfortunately, he obeyed god. It was a lot more groosome. I'll spare you the details.
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, *neither tempteth he any man* : Ge 22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that *God did tempt Abraham* , and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
I mean, yes, Jesus is God but he’s also his own person. Kinda like two truths existing at the same time. But even if you want to subscribe to the idea that they are not separate in any way then you also have to look at the fact that even if Jesus was JUST God, he was still in the flesh. And, as a result, he would be subject to the needs, or more importantly, the wants of the flesh. And TO ME that was the point. He had every opportunity to give into the flesh, and even had an opportunity to flee from the cross if he desired. But he denied his flesh because of his love for God’s people (by which I mean everyone, because I personally feel everyone is a child of God regardless of belief). This is all my take, and is how I was brought up seeing it (not to suggest that I was forced to believe because luckily my family was never forcefully strict with this). I also don’t mean to sound matter-of-factly or anything. Just my take. Which if you want to continue discussing things I’m fine with that, though I definitely don’t claim to know everything.
"About two thousand years ago, a fresher round of religious hustlers got together to figure out how to control their own group of idiots, so they said their 'messiah' got tempted by the devil - out in the desert, _where no one was around,_ the devil tempted him three times. But let me ask you something: when they were sitting around making this s^^t up, why just three? Why not ten, like they usually did? I'll tell you why: _because three was all they could do._ Luckily for them, though, three things are all you need to convince someone. 'Faster than bullet, stronger than train, buildings are too short' - see that? So three temptations was actually lazy marketing." - George Carlin, probably
Funny that the "Three" was an attempt to try and use it to reflect the Tri-Omni Theory... or the Holy Trinity. It was almost a failed attempt to make a mockery of the Father-Son-Spirit trifecta. Should have written HUNDREDS...

Even as a child this sequence of temptations made zero sense to me. I mean, how can Satan believe he has the earth as his plaything when God meddles all the time and does what he wants (i.e. The Flood, Sodom and G.) Thanks for going into it.

I think about this quite often…how once my brain had made the shift to the realization of just how manmade and mythological all religions are (Christianity truly no more real than Scientology) I could never view them the same way again. Just as you titled your channel, my mind had shifted gears and there was no going back. Not only is the temptation of Jesus ridiculous but, so is everything in the Bible! The thing that continues to bother me is that no one in my extended family has ever asked me why I no longer believe. Not even when I point this out do they ask! Are they afraid my answer might make sense and threaten their fragile belief system? Do they fear not being able to set aside rational thinking to continue believing the fantasy? I tend to think they are afraid they might learn something they cannot ignore which would make it difficult to cling to their “customs.” They might be forced to change their lifestyle and they just can’t risk that! Thanks for continued enlightenment.
I love "The Great Inquisitor" from "The Brothers Karamazov". It was probably one of the first triggers for my deconstruction, as I struggled with Ivan's ideas even as a teenager (I read those books way too early the first time😅), but each new reading increased my discomfort.
Jesus not being tempted is meaningless if he was God & still had divine powers to completely resist temptation. Jesus literally cheated at his own game by giving himself immunity against sin.
Perhaps it’s a fable about delayed gratification? The lesson is that if you put up with hardship (ie. subservience) you will be richly rewarded. Yeah, that old scam.
Hey! I'm a Christian. I actually loved this video. There's one big notion that repeatedly came to my mind which will be the main idea of my rebuttal comment here which is this: if you're not impressed by a single thing that Jesus did, that's perfectly fine. In fact, most of this video is not an argument against Christianity. I noticed numerous times throughout this episode you mentioned things like "we're supposed to be amazed or in awe that Jesus overcame this temptation" or "It's not much of a big achievement to fast for 40 days. Many people have done it." I want you to first understand that I get that in today's Christianity- specifically in North America- the culture of many Christians' belief lacks critical thinking skills, evidence, and reasoning. That's what made it so difficult for me to become a Christian. But I want you to understand that that emotional Christianity is not biblical. Meaning that there is nowhere in the Bible that says you MUST FEEL impressed by Jesus fasting for 40 days. You MUST be impressed by Jesus overcoming Satan's temptation. Yes it is stupid for Satan to think that offering the world would get Jesus to bow down. But that is a testament to how stupid being prideful and full of yourself can make you. Yes there was way too much on the line for Jesus to logically justify turning the stone to bread to break his fast. The fate of the world is supposedly on his shoulders, right? But 1) that just shows how much Jesus was committed to doing what was LOGICALLY RIGHT over submitting to what his feelings and natural animalistic desires wanted in the moment, and 2) if you're not in awe and amazement over Jesus making the right decision in keeping his fast, THAT'S PERFECTLY FINE. There is no essential Christian doctrine that says you MUST be impressed. On behalf of Christians, I apologize. There are a lot of dumb Christians out there that lack critical thinking skills and reason for their faith. But what I want to express to you today is that when we apply those things, Christianity still holds up. I hope this helps. Willing to respond to anybody who wants to talk about this further.
Hi! I am also a Christian and that was my impression, too. The line of reasoning here seems to be "we are supposed to be amazed that Christ resisted temptation and if we are then that negates the divinity of Christ". But who is expecting this of us? I have been a Christian my whole life, and surrounded by people educated in theology, and I have never heard of this approach. Why would we be astonished at Christ's ability to resist temptation when that is the whole point? As to the form of the narrative, it may sound like proof-texting to us, but dueling scripture passages is a very first-century Jewish way of making a point. I think this guy is reading too much Joseph Campbell.
Thank you for making a video on this topic. You have this wonderful way of showing how ridiculous the modern Christian notions of Jesus and the Trinity are in relation to the actual gospel stories. Thank you for showing the evolution of the story throughout the Synoptics.
Great commentary, Brandon. I've quoted Reza Aslan from his book "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth" before; without quoting exactly, his idea of the time in the wilderness was that he went to be a student of John the Baptizer. Reza thinks that John was an Essene. And he supports his idea of Jesus being a student of John because Jesus came back using quotes from John, calling the priests and the other usual suspects a "brood of vipers." There are other quotes, but I don't have the ebook handy, but you get the idea. To me, this makes more sense than being tempted by "the devil."
'We need a hero who is not overpowered for this story to make sense; --- SO TRUE!!! It totally makes sense that when these Gospel accounts were written, Jesus wasn't considered to be God. LOL When I deconstructed, I realized that if God was NOT believed to be omnipotent, but rather was locked in an eternal struggle with a more-or-less equal evil force like Satan, the world would make so much more sense.

Great overview I've only heard that story read once, when I was a Christian haven't even looked at it since I've been an atheist But it's just like all the other stories once you use logic and common sense without fundamentalist glasses on you see all the holes in the story and your left with Swiss cheese.
Something I don't see brought up in this story is the contradiction between the story and Jesus' ministry. So, Jesus preaches that to lust after a woman is to commit adultery, and to be angry without cause is akin to murder and risks hell fire. Thought crimes are very much on the table, here. Tell me, is it a sin to be tempted? If it's not a sin to be tempted, why are lust, envy, and greed counted among the most grievous of sins? If it is a sin to be tempted, then how can Jesus be sinless if he was tempted? Or was he not tempted after all?
Jesus is just copying Moses' 40 days without food or water... but the writer left out the no water part because by that time people knew you could only last 3 days without water. 40 days is also not 40 days, that is just the way they said "a couple weeks or so" just like 40 years wandering in the wilderness, is just their way of saying "a few years or so", just like them saying Jesus is returning soon, actually means "in a couple thousand years or so" because a day equals a thousand years in the mind of... nobody... ever! These men were just really bad with "Numbers" (especially 31:17-18)
Yes, I understand exactly what you’re saying Brandon! And I understand how ridiculous this concept is! You made so many good points. I had to pause and think so many times during this video. I enjoyed watching it very much!
they tell us jesus never sinned but then they also tell us we are all born sinners because of original sin .... so how did jesus avoid that? he was born into sin as well ! u can't have it both ways.
The Catholics get around this by saying Mary was immaculately conceived also. So Mary had no sin and God had no sin so Jesus had no sin. Everybody else just says sin travels through the male chromosome. So since Jesus did not have a male human father, he had no sin.
I'm kinda confused about the Jesus never sinned thing when I read: Luke 19:27 But as for those enemies of mine (enemies of Jesus? God/son of God has puny mortal enemies?) who were unwilling that I should become their king, bring them here, and cut them to pieces in my presence. So yeah what about first talking to them to see why they did not want Jesus to be their king? I mean can't God read the minds of such people especially when they are supposed to be the very enemies of God's only son (and or God himself) and then resolve the issue peacefully that way instead?
@@Firestorm12345678910 well, Jesus is speaking in a parable. I'm not sure what the parable means, but it's just an illustration. Also, Jesus didn't come to bring peace. He came to bring a sword. Also, the whole thing is just made up gibberish.
"But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 1.3
He also told us that we too are sons of God. This bit of information is crucial in order to make sense of the choice of Jesus coming down as a son of God and getting tempted. It was just a reminder so that when we too face similar temptations we can remember who we are.
As a child, I loved reading stories about First Nations peoples and their culture. I remember stories about a sacred ceremony called the Sun Dance, where participants would fast for many days, some would pierce their skin as they danced around a pole, seeking a vision or guidance from spirits of their people. The Sun Dance was a grueling test of endurance and fortitude; I believe other cultures in Asia and Africa have similar trials. I think there are Buddhist monks who fast for prolonged periods The 40 days in the wilderness reminded me of these other traditions of lengthy fasting to seek a vision, to find clarity. Being born into a culture that believed in an Adversary to humankind, I think Jesus could have believed such an apparition appearing to him - it would have been a vision compatible with his culture; he wouldn’t have seen what a Buddhist or Sun Dancer would have seen. Scripture takes this and runs with it as ‘Satan’ appearing
Jesus told his followers “ dudes I saw this big furry guy! Came after me, tripped over his giant feet. I barely escaped!” And his followers said “no one is gonna believe that crap, just tell everyone it was the devil.”
"Jesus and the devil use verses out of context" in which the bible in its perfection exposes fractals - cherry picking the cherry pickings ad infinitum.
Brandon - saying out loud what (likely millions of) people have silently asked themselves ... about the insanity of the stories they hear about in churches (or bible studies). People who look around and think "maybe it is me that's crazy and I'm just not getting it." Brandon - affirming logical thinking to those floundering in a "sea" of beLIEf that just doesn't make sense to the curious and reasonable. This may be the epoch, the big moment in history, where humanity finally throws off the shackles of religion and begins to grow up - focusing on using human hands, human ideas, human solutions to solve the human problems causing all the suffering in the world. Bandon is part of the chorus of necessary, bold, articulate voices recognizing we are deluding ourselves with anthropomorphic abstractions (god(s), angels, demons, etc) and worse, relinquishing our logic to CONfident "authorities" on the subject. The final step of this transition will be forming positive growth communities to replace religion with heathy constructive social structures to bring as much peace, prosperity and flow/happiness to humanity which also "respects" the world and universe that we find our finite selves in. Keep up the phenomenal work sir !!
Great post. Unfortunately the rhetoric of the Bible has so much specifically designed to sway shallow thinkers from going deeper and seeing the light that Brandon's clearly defined escape routes will be propagandized by apologists as a path straight to the realm of the Boogeyman. And the faithful will tuck their tails, lower their heads and return to their prison cells with humility and a breath of relief knowing they narrowly avoided their souls destruction.

Great episode. I agree, if Christians want the story to mean anything they're going to have to sacrifice some of Jesus's divinity, or at the very least deny him access to it to some extent

Satan is offering the kingdoms of the world to Jesus saying that they have been given to me and I can give them to anyone. If Jesus was god, Satan is offering god something that god gave him. Here’s an analogy: It’s like getting a present from someone and then tempting the person that gave you the present with the present and saying that this present was gifted to me and I can give it to anyone.

Jesus was in his 30's. He was well enough developed, brain wise, to be able to defer gratification today for gratification tomorrow. All he had to do was sit tight, and wait a few months, then instead of cities and riches, he's awarded the keys to the entire universe and the ability to control it with just thought alone. Where's the temptation?
Imagine if the temptation was right from the OT the whole time... Yahweh's pride caused everything. And the legit climax? Humanity waking up and realizing that their "God" is being a tyrant and an oppressive force, that they have the right to bring anarchy. The keys to the universe is not so easy to wield. The real temptation is that you can do whatever you want, create whatever you like. But it also had the potential to destroy everything if so willed. What do you think Yahweh chose? And if you bear the same responsibility, what would you have chosen?
The "100% human 100% god" thing is actually a misconception, he was actually 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name
I’d like to hear more about the devil, Satan, Lucifer. His origins, demeanor, goals, powers, etc. And how is the Devil’s offer to worship him any worse than Yahweh’s offer to worship him?
"What's good early gang!" well, it took me 45 minutes of checking for today's vid to post before realizing i hadn't turned my clock back an hour. Other than that, all good. :)
i agree that it doesn't make sense as a temptation unless Jesus isn't, or at least doesn't know that he' is, God-incarnate. And it's not like God's plan can fail. What happens if Jesus takes the bread? Does he end up in hell and then God sends his other son?
This whole story didn’t make sense to me when I was 10 years old sitting at mass, but I thought I was too young to understand. Now I’m almost 30, and I feel bad for my 10-year-old self. You knew better, but you didn’t know there was a way out.
What kinda irks me about this is when the devil tempts Jesus and how many times he does it. If he started tempting Jesus at the end of his 40-day fast, why did he wait until the end? If he tempted him throughout the fast, why tempt him only 3 times? You would think he would've done more tempting over the course of 40 days. They might have even had way more conversations and give us more insight into the devil, moreso than the bible already gave us.
I’m a little confused bc I had always thought there was a verse or something saying that said God gave dominion over the Earth to Satan. It’s funny-I realize that not knowing the Bible inside and out but having heard a lot of concepts in church gave me a warped view of the actual text. (Preachers will manipulate that word, now.) So just more reason why this channel has been so helpful to me. It’s getting at that subconscious crap. The beliefs that were drummed into your head long before you could think critically which then become a part of you(even if it’s a very confused part). Hard to shake something you learned at the same time you were learning to be nice to animals and other toddlers
If we could have a printed version of the bible that were all the things preachers add into it it would be a million times bigger and simply unrecognizable from the actual one.
could the writers of those accounts have been influenced by the very similar stories about Buddha? (He went out into the wilderness, starved for 49 days, was tempted by Mara, had 12 disciples one of which betrayed him, etc)
Also, if Jesus really had been fasting for 40 days, then I can dismiss this whole story. Because we know people have both auditory and visual hallucinations when they fast. It's far more likely that Jesus went out into the wilderness to ritualistically fast and was tripping and hallucinating he was seeing these things than there was actually a spirit being there.
One positive aspect of this biblical story is its brilliant use by Dostoevsky in “The Grand Inquisitor” chapter of “The Brothers Karamazov.” It was the poem/story written by atheist Ivan as a criticism of religion, especially organized religion. The entire book was a good read, and this chapter is one of many highlights. The story pits atheism against theism. Dostoevsky’s religious perspective ensures theism prevails, nonetheless, it is an excellent read for atheists and theists. Despite Dostoevsky’s religious belief he embraces doubt and understands the need for it. His ability to see the atheist perspective and convey it in such a compelling manner is rare for believers. As an atheist, I found reading it was a memorable life experience.
This! The Grand Inquisitor is perhaps the most powerful chapter in western literature. I can’t express how good this story-within-a-story is. One thing I find lacking in atheism, at least those of us who seem to disparage fiction as compared to “fact” and “truth” and “reality,” is that we underestimate the power of fiction and its efficacy when it comes to discussing ethics and morality. Our moral imaginations are _real_ and they obviously _exist_ in an important way. They are based in empathy, which also exists, as does its contrast: sociopathy. The ability to imagine and recognize both good and evil is crucial to all of this, and gives a (sort of) “proof” of something like God. And this also leads to a critique of biblical interpretation using some form of “literal” approach when we should rather be using a “literary” approach where we temporarily suspend our disbelief (a working definition of “faith?”) and immerse ourselves in the story without asking ourselves if this really really happened in history.
@@brucee6524 I agree, the Grand Inquisitor is that good! However, I don’t think it is widespread amongst atheists to “disparage fiction” as it relates to how humanity understands ethics and morality. Any fictional story, with its salt, captures its audience with an insight into some moral enlightenment otherwise, it doesn’t sell well. Some philosophers, such as Albert Camus, are famous for their fictional works written specifically for those reasons. The process is just very informal. The Bible is an entirely different animal. Fictional stories are written to elucidate obvious moral truths or provoke thought on more complex ethical dilemmas. It is up to the audience to interpret and accept or reject based on how compelling the narrative is. The audience member’s personal experiences and biases will influence what they get out of the experience, and this is fine. The Bible is a book that is considered to be the giver of moral commandments. I have no issue with using stories to elucidate moral truths depending on the circumstance. However, one has to be aware of the dangers of this and its history. Plato recognized that the myths surrounding the Greek gods did not show them in a good light and decided to edit out the bad stuff with his Platonic philosophy. The Hebrew bible suffered the same issue. The Stoics developed a more conservative yet creative method for dealing with this issue. That was to create narratives and interpretations (allegories) that would clean up the unGodly, immoral characteristics the religious texts contained. Philosopher, “Philo of Alexandria,” adopted the Stoic methodology and deployed allegory to harmonize Jewish scripture with Greek philosophy (the refined, edited, cleaned-up Platonic philosophy). One of his goals was to clean up the image of God by reconciling the moral and philosophical gaps between Jewish Scripture and Greek philosophy. Greek thinkers like Plato and Aristotle valued reason, consistency and ethical ideals in their conception of the divine, which they viewed as perfect, rational and unchanging. By contrast, some passages in Jewish scripture portray God with human-like traits, such as anger, jealousy, and even regret - qualities the Greeks would have seen as inconsistent with a truly divine nature. The allegories were to clean this up. Using allegories to interpret the Bible is problematic because it is considered a book of divine moral commandments. The deployment of allegories is subjective and varies with the human deciding on the allegory and its meaning. One has to know, is the allegory to enlighten us with a moral revelation or is it to eliminate immoral characteristics associated with our God? As society progresses and societal ethical mores become more enlightened, do we change those allegories? We all know that we humans tend to interpret such things in ways that reflect our personal biases and ways that provide personal benefit. People in power utilize such opportunities for personal ambition. The Bible (and similar) has much more power than any other fictional story.
@@celeritasc9207 have you read the introduction to Plato’s _Timaeus_ ? It starts with a statement from Critias that a historical account of a war would help lead everyone to an understanding of the concept of an ideal society in motion. He remarks that, because this was a _fact of history_ and not “merely” a myth that it would hold special status as an anchor to “reality.” Critias then goes through through about a dozen layers of separation between himself hearing this story and someone who was actually there as a witness to - ironically - inspire confidence in the veracity of his account. Then he gets to telling the actual tale of a war between Athens and… wait for it… Atlantis. The first time I read that I laughed out loud. I’m convinced that Plato was affirming the opposite of what was literally on the page, that there really is no problem with using myth and fiction to inform our notions of justice, morality, good and evil.

The other myth recommendations at the end are great stories! Another great video
Thanks, Tyler! Yes exactly. Not real temptations and not a real sacrifice!

Had a duel against my 7yr old in a video game last night. We made a wager that if he were to win he would be the Father of our home. Wife says, "What!? No, that's not happening!"
Then I reminded her own God is his own Father and Son..
So,...she's mad it at me..
That's so funny (but probably not dealing with her response :) )

I've really been enjoying your videos. I'm exJW . I was super disappointed last night to find out that my husband genuinely thinks if God tells you to kill babies there must be a good reason. Ugh. He doesn't think objectively about anything in the Bible, which witnesses take VERY literally.

And of course you lie 24/7, 365 days a year, every year about not having a clue about any of that
Does God tell you to do that?
Does it have a good reason?
Do you really think objectively?

Not to be a downer. A student at the Bible College I attended, thought god was telling him to kill his baby because it was "demon possed." Unfortunately, he obeyed god. It was a lot more

True. The book of James says that God cannot be tempted by evil, thus Jesus cannot be God.
You cannot be tempted by what you can create.
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, *neither tempteth he any man* :
Ge 22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that *God did tempt Abraham* , and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
God doesn't need to be tempted by evil, he gave into it long ago.
@@KatonRyu not just evil, spite, one person made a mistake and God is so angry he decides to cause everyone after to suffer
" Oh myself why hast I forsaken myself ? "
I have never actually thought of the implications of Jesus being tempted by the devil and what that means. You are right it does not make sense.
So three temptations was actually lazy marketing."
- George Carlin, probably
Funny that the "Three" was an attempt to try and use it to reflect the Tri-Omni Theory... or the Holy Trinity. It was almost a failed attempt to make a mockery of the Father-Son-Spirit trifecta.

Even as a child this sequence of temptations made zero sense to me. I mean, how can Satan believe he has the earth as his plaything when God meddles all the time and does what he wants (i.e. The Flood, Sodom and G.) Thanks for going into it.
Jesus is 100% human, 100% God and 200% fictional 😅
The math checks out!
Wait, shouldn't it be 300% fictional? And also 100% fictional?
To be fair, there is evidence for some guy named Jesus to have existed in that area at that time, it’s just the god part that’s fictional, but thanks to the church that’s still 100% baby.
The math checks out - sounds legit! 😇 Granted if we are multiplying versus adding, then Jesus is 10,000% fictional! 👍

Hey thank you for the support so much!
The funniest thing is the fact that Jesus needed to fast in the first place😂😂
Yeah exactly, why?
I love "The Great Inquisitor" from "The Brothers Karamazov". It was probably one of the first triggers for my deconstruction, as I struggled with Ivan's ideas even as a teenager (I read those books way too early the first time😅), but each new reading increased my discomfort.
"You know what was hard when I was fasting? Watching TV and seeing ads come up..." was followed up by an ad😂
Jesus not being tempted is meaningless if he was God & still had divine powers to completely resist temptation. Jesus literally cheated at his own game by giving himself immunity against sin.
Immunity against sin is exactly right. Well put!
"like the devs writing themselves into the game" --logicked
And since birth, making sure that he was born magically somehow from a virgin Girl smh.
Can’t help but giggle a little at the thought of Jesus using verses out of context against the devil.
Appreciate that!
To me, this makes more sense than being tempted by "the devil."
that book is amazing! i have been thinking of doing a review for the channel.

Great overview I've only heard that story read once, when I was a Christian haven't even looked at it since I've been an atheist
But it's just like all the other stories once you use logic and common sense without fundamentalist glasses on you see all the holes in the story and your left with Swiss cheese.
Indeed! And thanks!
Yep it's a contradiction. If thought crime is a sin then Jesus never could have been tempted by thought crime.
At 19:23 where you say " It's so stupid ", that sums it up
🎯
Jesus is just copying Moses' 40 days without food or water... but the writer left out the no water part because by that time people knew you could only last 3 days without water.
40 days is also not 40 days, that is just the way they said "a couple weeks or so" just like 40 years wandering in the wilderness, is just their way of saying "a few years or so", just like them saying Jesus is returning soon, actually means "in a couple thousand years or so" because a day equals a thousand years in the mind of... nobody... ever! These men were just really bad with "Numbers" (especially 31:17-18)
It's actually 5 days some people can't make it three but it is splitting hairs It's just important to know in a survival situation.
@patrickday4206 thanks, I didn't know that, turns out I'm not that great with numbers either. 😂

Yes, where are the hover cars ??
It should say ''after fasting for 40 days, he was almost dead'' but you know, miracles!
I think there are Buddhist monks who fast for prolonged periods
The 40 days in the wilderness reminded me of these other traditions of lengthy fasting to seek a vision, to find clarity.
Such a great point!
Humans should get past the point of inducing hallucinations and then believing they're real.
Jesus told his followers “ dudes I saw this big furry guy! Came after me, tripped over his giant feet. I barely escaped!”
And his followers said “no one is gonna believe that crap, just tell everyone it was the devil.”
"Jesus and the devil use verses out of context" in which the bible in its perfection exposes fractals - cherry picking the cherry pickings ad infinitum.
You said it!
As a former Christian trust me it’s confusing to us to and probably one of the things that we always questioned
I only know of this story from reading a children's Bible, the church I went to never taught about it.

Not a single Native American who went into the wilderness for his 'vision quest' came back without one.
He remarks that, because this was a _fact of history_ and not “merely” a myth that it would hold special status as an anchor to “reality.”
Critias then goes through through about a dozen layers of separation between himself hearing this story and someone who was actually there as a witness to - ironically - inspire confidence in the veracity of his account.
Agreed, it’s so stupid.
