  • Volume 2 of a collection of Amtrak run-bys along the Northeast Corridor between Phila and Trenton. Phase III, IV, and V AEM-7s, E60s, brand new HHP8s and HSELs made for a varied and enjoyable time. Filmed by my Dad with an over-the-shoulder VHS camcorder (and a few zoom-happy shaky ones by my young teenage self) while my younger brother and I watched and became lifelong railfans. Enjoy!

    It's quite impressive that the E60CP electric locomotives we're able to hold on until the early 2000s before finally being retired

    • @AVeryRandomPerson
      @AVeryRandomPerson 3 года назад +3

      These were E60MAs at the time. The CPs were steam equipped, and most were retired when the first AEM-7s came.

    I like that some of the amfleet cars had the Acela colors on the line where the windows are

    • @brybryguy6314
      @brybryguy6314 2 года назад +1

      Yes. That's beacuse, Amtrak had their Acela regional. They where mostly pulled by then the new HHP8 engines and those Amfleet cars was bussines class only. So Amtrak painted the Amfleets the same color as the Acela to show that was an Acela Regional train. Basically. Amtrak shortly dropped the Acela Regional after only a few years beacuse the HHP8s where terrible and problematic engines and well, they didn't sell alot of tickets on the Acela Regional.

    Excellent documentary, those few years 2000-2003 were interesting since one could see 5 different electric locomotives on the Corridor, Acela, Jersey Arrows, Silverliners II, III and IV. Biggest variety of electric power since Conrails unfortunate shut down of electrics two decades earlier.

    For some reason, the E-60 clips (with horns) are the most satisfying. Proper E-60 horn @ 6:46. Also @ 9:15. So what if they didn't go 125MPH due to tracking issues above 90MPH? It took two AEM-7's to pull what one E-60 could on what was once territory worked by T-1's, E-44's, and GG-1's.

      E-60s weren’t the best locos. They could pull more than the aem-7s, sure, but the e-60s were nowhere as reliable as the aem-7s. They were also double the weight of an optimum passenger loco, and would yaw sideways when they would accelerate, placing a lot of stress on the rails. They also detailed twice during testing, so I’m not sure how they even got into service…

    28:16 Arrow IIIs in the rain...nothing better. In my college days (only a couple years after this) I loved to ride in the vestibules that were really not-in-use cabs, because unlike the married pair vestibules they let in a ton of wind and, on wet days, a bit of rain, too. It felt like you were going easily twice as fast as you really were through the tunnels out of Penn Station and across the Meadowlands.

      they would typically carry mail since amtrak was scrap for money. However freight railroads didn't like having amtrak trains pulling freight since they were taking away their business. They went to court and amtrak had to put a end to all freight services

    As of now, Amtrak has begun a rebuild program on their HHP-8 Locomotives the same way they rebuilt their F40PH locomotives in the early 2000s The rest of the HHP-8 electrics are being rebuilt into NPCU units and like the F40s the prefix number 90 will be added in front of their existing number

      @@THEFINALHAZARD now that would be interesting I hope that will actually happen if we are to continue to see the genesis locomotives rule for Amtrak they should do exactly what they did to the F40PH and HHP-8 locomotives before them I think they would be very great candidates for nonpowered control units because of their aerodynamic French Monocoque design all they would have to do is remove the prime mover add some weight but it would still be lightweight and fast I was six years old and I was in Fort Worth Texas I remember seeing the heartland flyer that had one F40 converted NPCU and surprisingly there was another F40PH but one that was still an operation One briefing I remember was when they had to reposition the heartland flyer when both 21 and 22 the Texas Eagle were to arrive they had to reposition the heartland flyer onto track one and I remember hearing the notch sounding wind on the rear pushing F40PH my only true memory of an original Amtrak screamer
