- Olga Brudastova, Margot Sergent, and Samed Walker have spent the last six months waiting to see if they won the green card lottery. Today, they found out their fates.
Sergent is a 40-year-old musician and actress from France, who is currently in the U.S. on an "extraordinary abilities" visa. Brudastova came from Moscow in 2013 to pursue her doctorate in civil engineering at Columbia University on a student visa. And Walker traveled to United States after escaping violence in Ghana. He arrived at the U.S. Mexico border by way of South and Central America from Brazil, and is currently seeking asylum.
The green card lottery, known officially as the diversity visa program, was established by Congress as part of the Immigration Act of 1990. Its purpose is to increase the geographic and cultural diversity of the U.S. population, and the vast majority of applicants apply from their home country.
No other country in the world has a visa lottery like this, but the downside is that it’s almost impossible to win. In 2017, only around one quarter of 1 percent of applicants ended up with a green card.
Today, Olga, Margot, and Samed all logged on to the State Department website to get their verdicts. VICE News was there.

10 years ago, my uncle convinced my father to register for the lottery. My father didn’t want to do it as he had seen his brother apply 15 times without any luck. But, he ended up applying that year. We were chosen.
As a current medical student, I cannot be more grateful for my family’s decision to apply and come to the states. I now help other family members fill out the application, with special attention to my uncle❤

@@JohnnyXanax He's probably a U.S. citizen. He said they got their green cards 10 years ago, and you only have to reside in the U.S. for 5 years to become eligible for U.S. citizenship, so he's probably American.

That's actually super likely to win. If you're send applications since age 0 (your parents) until age of 50 (for your kids) you have like 20% chance to win

We got selected in 2017 and currently live in New York :) My husband and I never won a single lottery in our lives before. I have no idea how we got so lucky because it was our first time applying for green card lottery and we didn't even expect to win considering all those stories of people who were trying to win for years.

I currently live in the United States and recently naturalized as a U.S CITIZEN from a Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery (DV) that I won back in Liberia. I can't explain how it happened but i am grateful it did. Lord knows. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

This is crazy to think about. I’m an American citizen born and raised, but my parents are from Ghana. I remember I was interviewing my dad for a school project and found out it was through the visa lottery he was able to come here with my mom. Thank the lord for that happening as it gave me a life full of so many opportunities, especially with education. I never really understood/ appreciated how lucky/ privileged I am to be born here. Especially with finding out that only .25% of applicants get it. Just Insane, God Bless!

I "won" the DV lottery in 2015 after trying off and on for about 9 years and I currently reside in Texas. Recently I was going through a bout of complacency and self doubt on my choice to come to the US but this video has made me even more determined to make the most of this opportunity and has made me even more thankful of how incredibly lucky I am.

My mother applied and won this lottery in West Africa (TOGO), lived in the U.S for 3 years then sent for us. This system is definitely based on luck in the end.

My Parents applied in the 90's, won, years later my sisters went on to be nurses, my brother is a real estate agent, my parents are retired and happy in their home, i joined the Navy over 5 years ago and now serve on Submarines as a petty officer second class. it's winnable, and is a blessing as well

Now US can let all people in, so government have made lottery and bring small number of people in, just 50k for 330M nation, one drop in the sea. US luuuuv lottery system. They used lottery for army admission before it became contract only, they use it for immigrant admission now... Employment based US visas are also lottery :)

It's not impossible or "unwinnable". It's a lottery, so not everyone who applies will win. I have 2 family members who won this lottery and 1 family friend who also won this lottery. You beat a lot of odds when you're able to migrate to the US through this process. All 3 people I know who won this immigration lottery said they cried when they found out they won. It is an extensive process once you've been picked and not everyone who is picked gets through. But it's worth applying. If you win, it's life changing.

I know of a family that won but could not get the embassy interview within the fiscal year. They didn't come to the US, although it was not their fault. They were told to apply again. It shuttered their high hopes! Winning is just the first step.
And also they don't say a crucial thing - there is a lottery inside of the lottery! So if you win you randomly get a case number, which will determine your order in the interview schedule. If this case number is one of the latest it is possible you will never be invited to the interview, because all the visas have been taken before you. Just imagine how these people must feel...

The luckiest I've ever witnessed in my life was when my aunt, her husband and son all won at the same time. I was so excited to accept them here mostly because I only had friends and no family. But yeah each entry got accepted.

I won in 2003, moved from Kenya to US, went to college, graduated, after 5 years became US citizen -since one can after that period of time subject to good standing with the law, got a fantastic good paying job in US. But i used to miss my native Kenya so much that i used to came back like twice a year! In 2015 i decided to relocate back to Kenya. Yes DV gave me great opportunity, the notion that its a retarded system is not true, some even end up forfeiting it after short stint in US. I personally know someone in Kenya who won it - good friend of mine - but never went ahead with further processing after exploring what it means to relocate his family from Kenya to US.

Bhaskar...Kenya is fine - for me at least, its where am born and raised up, so even in the midst of challenges, am able to navigate and cope. When i worked in US i used to save almost 90% of my earnings from my main plum job, but on weekends i would do some gigs which earned me more money which i used for my rent & upkeep.So when i moved back, i had some capital so i set my own businesses, therefore am own boss. Perfect for me, cant ask for more, gives me time to do whatever i want like annually visiting US since am dual citizen.

My grandma, which lived in ukraine, applied for a green card 15 years in a row. She finally won in 2011 and came to the usa with her husband. Sadly, she died of cancer in 2016 at the age of 67.
And it’s beautiful after she got to live in the country she wished for 🖤

@Mason Peterson yeah but this is literally a lottery, a small part of the U.S immigration, not the entire process
I also won the DV Lottery. What this video does NOT EXPLAIN is that once you have been selected for futher processing, it's still a VERY LONG ROAD to your Green Card. You must hope to have a low case number because 100,000 people get notified for further processing but there are just 50,000 Green Cards available. In countries like Germany there are only around 450 people who actually end up getting one, because that's their quota. Then you still have to get an interview appointment before end of the fiscal year and still pass the interview! It's long and emotionally challenging.

If you just want to live averagely and rely on the government Europe is the place. If you want to live an exquisite life and have drive to achieve goals then the US is an excellent place to be. My wife and I make more money than we could have ever imagined back home and live better than we would at home. It's not for everyone.

In 2012, i had applied for Tourist visa to come to the usa; the consulate in Ghana denied me. A friend suggested i try the Visa Lottery, hesitant but tried any way, in 2013 i won the visa lottery and relocated here from Ghana. Its been more than a blessing. For those who try every year, when your time comes, you will definitely win. Be prepared financially and God/universe will take care of the rest. God bless America!!

@@Fauxkat69 settled with family friend for about 2 months, found a job with kmart, moved out; worked in KMART for 3 months; got a contract job in a financial institution; made full time in Dec 2014. Ive been with that company since then. Its been awesome and life changing experience.
My parents applied, won the lottery, and we moved to America back in 2004. I had the green card for over ten years then I became a Citizen in 2017. As an immigrant, I’ve always been aware of how lucky we are live the land of opportunities. This video had emphasized of how lucky I am and that I have to take full advantage of all the opportunities to become GREAT !!!!
That hurt to watch because right off the bat, I knew all of them would be denied. As an American, I feel I personally take my legal status for granted. It's a sad truth. Each of these 3 individuals from 3 different countries seem to be model citizens making their way thru life. It's unfair that they cant be given the proper opportunity to flourish and become citizens of this nation.

I applied for straight 11 year and didn't win, and on the other hand my husband won at first attempt. Also my brother's wife won on their 4th attempt. So it really is your luck!

Yes but also romatizices the american dream everyday Americans are struggling and people just say work harder quit being lazy when people are giving it their all to get by. Being born here gives us so many apportinitues yet so many obstacles to achieve anything. We have one of the most powerful passport available 187 countries we can visit visa free but people can't even afford to leave their home state. We have one of the greatest schools yet we can afford it. We can afford to go to the doctors or miss work because people's jobs don't offer pay sick days (pto) or vacation hrs. My dad and I won this free card lottery back in 2004 I believe and came to this country in 2006 all the way from Cuba, after arriving here everything was given to us, literally.
I should add that IF you are lucky to win, there are extensive interviews with the embassy. A family needs to meet certain educational, financial & health requirements before they are actually granted visas. You also need to have proof of knowing somebody reliable in the US who can ‘house’ you for a while until you’re able to navigate the system by yourself. Then, once in the US, you must obtain a job and be an upstanding citizen. Only after 5 years of lawful living you can apply for citizenship/naturalization - another extensive process where they evaluate your profession, education, and CHARACTER before deeming you eligible for naturalization.
I know 3 members of one family "won" the greencard lottery.
Did they win your countries lottery or the US one? Some countries have an extra lottery for US green cards and there have been rumors of corruption for those.

Me and my direct family got US VISAs in 2006 from Ecuador through a 3 year process. It's not completely random, we were only allowed whole family VISAs because my mother had a masters in computer science and my father a mechanical engineering degree. They compare you thoroughly to other applicants and then decide if you even get an interview. Overall great program, most of us who are given this opportunity have earned the privilege to live in US.
Hmmm I’m not sure that’s true. My friend won the DV lottery and he only had a Highschool diploma and not a lot of work experience. I know a few other people like that who won. No college at all. And I have a BA, have been playing for 22 years now (more than half of my life) and I never won 💔😭

Im 15, my parents have been applying every year for the past 6 years. we applied again today, hopefully we win as it my goal is to become a surgeon in the usa.
I met a couple who won it last year and girlfriend of mine won it this year.. All are Australian citizens living in Australia, so it’s definitely not impossible..
My parents were applying for several years before my birth, but neither of those attempts were successful. I wonder how different my life could’ve been if I was born in US compared to the life I have in Russia. Poverty, which I’m still trying to get out of, several major crises, political persecutions, and now the war… crazy to imagine I could’ve never experienced all this.
Now me and my husband are going to apply for the first time. Wish us luck. Hopefully our future children won’t have to go through all the s//it we had to.

There is "almost" no requirement to apply, but after they win, winners go thru rigorous screen process, and interview before they are granted a green card. winning does not mean, a automatic green card.
I got my green card through the diversity visa lottery. The actual odds depend on which country you're applying from. There are a greater proportion of visas allocated to some regions compared to the number of applicants. For example, New Zealand has an oversized representation. So the odds for a New Zealander are much better than 0.25%. I have met quite a few people now who received their green card through the DV lottery.

I read a book written by a Japanese military veteran who got his green card from this program and served in US marines(03 series MOS),and deployed to Iraq 2 times then honorable discharged from military and made his own company.

I am English, I cant enter this type of lottery for a green card unfortunately as the UK is not one of the eligible nations to apply for this, however I really love the United States, and its way of life, the only realistic way, I could ever move to the US, is with sponsorship from an employer on US Soil.. or somehow hopefully meet the girl of my dreams who happens to be a nice American and we get Married... those are the two likeliest options, the THIRD is only possible If I have enough wealth, to create a business in the US, which will employ enough Americans, then they would let me in.. so yeah one way or the other I would choose to go to the US, even if I am not a millionaire, Its a great country full of FREEDOM and nice scenery so yeah I would prefer a Green card in the hopes of having one day US Citizenship.. you have no idea how good it would be to have that passport for me.

I know of 4 moroccans who won. One decided not to come after all and I think that's horrible to take that opportunity from another person. I think people need to be serious and have their money to move here in case they win. 50000 people win..not just one. So may the odds forever be in your favor. And there are many other ways to get here. So keep achieving your dreams.
I applied every year, gave up, and then got a L1 visa through my job which allowed me to qualify for a green-card. It can happen, but it was sheer luck and timing.

it is a heartbreaking situation, i have been applying for 7 straight years but luck hasn't been on my side.i hear about alot of people who win the lottery annually from my country" sudan" and almost all those who win it are the fortunated ones who have everything in life that i could only dream off " a nice home, a beautiful car and a rich loving family" .the rich ones who basically don't necessarily need to win. but that is life, it gives some people more than they need and deserve and denies those who really in need,people like me who have bnothing and been dreaming of winning the lottery since 2012.i basically built all my hopes and dreams on winning the lottery.but every time i check my status and see the rejection message,it breaks my heart and makes me lose hope. the first 3 years were the hardest but then you get used to being told "you haven't been selected" every year and it starts to feel normal.i no longer expect to win, and certainly i'm no longer building my hopes and dreams on winning the lottery; my dreams are not that big in fact they are not dreams at all, because all i ever want is a decent life, and somehow i could fillful that dream by traveling abroad to one of nearby arabic golf countries and within 3-4 years i could realize that dream but even that too is not easy as i have been trying to find a job broad since 2013 " i guess i really have a terrible luck at everything" .anyway winning the lottery will still be my big dream but i'm not gonna stop my life waiting for that distant dream to become a reality one day.instead i'm gonna keep looking for an opportunity of a job abroad.
