Blind channel won the UMK by a lot and is now Finland's Eurovision representative. This is fitting for a band that has always aimed as high as possible. Blind channel wants to be the biggest rock band in the world.
Hi, I'm Katri and I'm a music journalist at Ylex. I do all kinds of music-related content here at Ylex. Welcome. Weekly we go through the hottest topics and also get to know certain artists and bands better. And now it's Blind channel's turn.
Blind channel's plans to take over the world had proceeded quite well but then corona hit and effected everything. But also in an inspiring way because only a day after everything was cancelled, the first version of 'Dark side' was born. When the band was starting out in 2013, the starting point of Blind channel was kind of the status of underdogs. At least when it came to language and music style. The music trends in Finland stated that rap and the Finnish language were the thing but Blind channel was doing rock in English. Although with a hint of rap. Can you be successful with English? The situation now has proven that doing your own thing has paid off and Blind channel has proven the skeptics wrong. Many may have gotten the idea from media that Blind channel is a completely new thing but the truth is totally different.
Let's start off where everything began and hey you should stay and watch until the end because there is a surprise.
Blind channel is from Oulu and the band was formed in 2013. Before Blind channel had five members, now there are six. Last fall one of Finland's most successful djs, Alex Mattson joined the band. He had already been a part of 'Timebomb' single and done live shows with them, but in the fall he became an official member of the band.
Now a little info about the members. One of the vocalists of the band is Joel Hokka. He is also one of the guitarists. Joel tells in the Blind channel documentary series that he was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of seven and that it also effects everything that the band does. Joel became doing music at 14 and at the end of high school, he wanted to form a band that plays such good music that they could take over the world. This idea didn't take off immediately because everyone who was asked to join the band declined. But then finally Joonas Porko wanted to join and through him Olli Matela and Tommi Lalli were also found. And the other vocalist, Niko Moilanen was finally found from a home party.
Niko is the other vocalist of Blind channel. Niko is a super artistic dude and also super kind and smart. Working with Niko is nice and easy and for example Aleksi immediately found a connection with him. They could instantly talk about music or whatever for hours.
Joonas Porko is the glue that holds everything together and also in schedule. Joonas is said to be everybody's friend and according to the band mates also an amazing guitarist.
Olli Matela plays bass in Blind channel. Joonas and Olli have always played in the same band and they have been friends since childhood. Olli is the one everyone turns to when they need help with technical things.
Tommi Lalli is the drummer in the band and is said to be a really funny dude. Like everyone's favorite dude. As a drummer Tommi is a machine. Tommi also is the driver in all of the concert trips.
Last fall Aleksi Kaunisvesi aka Alex Mattson joined the band. Blind channel and Alex Mattson had a song writing day together and at the end of the day he was asked to join the band and without hesitation, his answer was immediately yes. Aleksi was feeling like Blind channel is such a hard-working band and they're so amazing people that he was excited as soon as he was asked to join. Aleksi is also known as Alex Mattson, one of Finland's most successful djs. The other members say that they are so lucky to have Aleksi, who is such a pro dj and gifted musician and an amazing dude. He also surprises them everyday. Joel has described that it's like Aleksi has this "biisien hyvennin" (something that makes songs better :D) that he uses to finish the touch of the songs. I love the term "hyvennin".
Blind channel has said that they know each other better than anyone and that they have seen everything. They've seen each other angry, stressed and also in the top of success. The members are like brothers with each other. Although Joel and Joonas are also like an old married couple, always nagging at each other and fighting. But also doing everything together and they even share a birthday.
Blind channel has 4 songwriters and the songwriting sessions are said to be like a tornado, like 4 dudes in a boxing ring. Blind channel has had a strong will to show and bluster from the beginning. The strength of the band is in it's members that work as one. Everyone has the same goal, to push forward. The band thinks that it's amusing that people have talked about them as a new band since they have been working for 8 years without a break.
In 2014 Blind channel attended Wacken metal battle competition and won. As a prize they got to perform at Wacken open air festival in Germany. In 2015 Blind channel won "Ylex stage haltuun" competition at Tavastia. That victory took Blind channel to perform at Provinssi and also a festival in Budapest. That was a big thing for Blind channel's career. Because of that concert organizers and the record company Ranka Kustannus showed interest.
Blind channel has said in UMK interviews that they want to get out of the little Finland, there is not enough space. The band has already toured the world. They have for example toured Europe and been an opening act for international artists like Simple plan and also outside of Finland. Blind channel has played over 200 gigs in over 10 countries.
Blind channel has released 3 albums. Their first album, 'Revolutions' was released in 2016. In 2018 'Blood brothers' came out and in 2020 their third album, 'Violent pop' was released. That term is also how Blind channel describes their own music style. Having their own genre has given the freedom to do any kind of music. The other vocalist Niko says that this genre includes the basic pop but also heavy death metal. Then you can just be like "hey, all this belongs in this violent pop we invented".
Last year Blind channel had big plans for the future but then corona came. However, in all frustration it also inspired because one day after everything was cancelled, the first version of 'Dark side' was born. Last year the band got a new management deal and a new member and because of them they got a new motivation to make music and work. Because of the pandemic the band also turned to UMK. They say they never even thought about it but then it actually seemed like a perfect opportunity to show 'Dark side' to over a million people. Blind channel also thought that performing in a big tv show is different than gigs as you only get to play one song and that has to be perfect. And hey, they did it pretty well. When the UMK finalists were announced, Blind channel, the black sheep of the competition, immediately awoke interest. And when the song came out the hype was real. Blind channel got a really good reception and many new fans. 'Dark side' became RUclips's number 1 in Finland and in Spotify it rose to the top. Blind channel was a strong favorite to win UMK and as it so happens, Blind channel won UMK and is Finland's Eurovision representative of 2021.
Blind channel has now had a big hype in Finland so could it be the same in Europe? Or internationally? Well, Blind channel already has some international fans and why couldn't the same hype be also outside of Finland? We can speculate this thing with a real expert.

Joel: Thank you.
K: How are you?
J: I'm really busy and there is a hype about everything that's going on. Nothing special, trying to keep up with this roller coaster.
K: Yeah. Well you guys have been quite visible in different medias and done many interviews after the victory. I want to know something that no one else knows. Like exclusively just for the Ylex. Some exciting thing.
J: This is something I've wanted to tell at some point about the song but I haven't found the right way and I think that now is the time.
K: This is it.
J: The first demo name of 'Dark side' was 'Sex and the suicide'.
K: Okay.
J: It was the name for a really long time and it was almost the actual name of the song. Like it describes the dark sides of life. Like it basically does now too. But then we realised that the name would be a bit too much because those are 2 quite rough things.
K: Yes yes.
J: We would have sang "living that live on the dark side" and like "sex and the suicide".
K: Oooooh I can hear that. I want to ask a bit about the band members. Which one of you gets most nervous?
J: I have to say me and Joonas. Joonas is more like... We are like torment and panic.
K: Yeah.
J: Joonas is more like panic. Like he runs around in circles before gigs and is really nervous about everything. I'm more like tormenting. I might just remind everyone of everything. Like do you have something handled before a gig, have changed the batteries in your mic. Everything useless like this. Like I would say we get the most nervous of us all. But we can also be cool in situations.
K: Like cool and nervous?
J: Yeah.
K: Well, who complains the most?
J: Me.
K: I would also like to know which one of you would wins the Survivors?
J: Maybe our drummer Tommi. He is such a good driver and he is the every-man type and I feel like he could build a house with his hands from some logs.
K: And he is like your designated driver?
J: Yeah, he always drives and doesn't let anyone else drive because he says that if he has to die, he wants to be the one driving rather than anyone else.
K: Okay.
J: Quite rough but like true story.
K: You are probably recognised right now like everywhere in Finland and also there's this new fame and hype. How does it all feel?
J: I feel like Finnish people are quite nice and easy. That they leave people alone. They might stare and recognise but otherwise I've just been trying to keep calm. I think it would be frustrating to let it get to my head or something like that. Like we just concentrate on going to Rotterdam and destroying the stage there.
K: Well, where are you with your plan to take over the world?
J: Winning UMK let us take an elevator in the plan to take over the world for some floors up. We don't have to walk the stairs like before. It of course feels good but we also know that anything can happen. Like it can be an icy shower or a complete fireworks to Mars. You can't know, maybe it's something in the between. But we also have big plans after Eurovision and I dare to exclusively reveal to Ylex that next year you get to enjoy Blind channel's new 4th album.
K: Yes! Hard.

Euroviisuihin mentäessä/UMK-kilpailussa BC ei kyllä tainnut olla altavastaaja - ainakaan omasta mielestä. Toivotaan, että tulee menestystä Euroviisuissa ja maailmanvalloituksessaan; yksi asia on kuitenkin varma, nimittäin se, että Euroviisuissa tulee ansaittua näkyvyyttä.
