ruclips.net/video/AxN27F7yN-c/видео.html She updated the video, and explains it as to why. Basic is, Solid white line, you stop if red. if not you have right of way or you crash, the pedestrian would have and should have stopped. and even then she had plenty of time to pass the light even before the pedestrian entered the lane as she was slowing as she approached the light.
Sorry but no. A pedestrian is already crossing the road. As people we risk assess, whatever rules you think the instructor was right about she was completely wrong to tell the student to keep going. It’s being that kind of instructor that causes accidents. Where there is ambiguity always opt for the safest option.
@@dannyfeller7034 do you stop on the red light for the crossing traffic? Or do you keep going on your own green light as you should? The red light was for cross traffic. The driver is not cross traffic, she was turning on a green light.
Folks the pedestrian is not the point I was making. The student saw a red light and a pedestrian so decided to stop. Most folk would do exactly the same thing. The instructor then started telling the student to keep going when the vehicle was almost at a stop. Vehicles from behind, if reading the road ahead would have already slowed, so getting the student to then drive again adds confusion. It also creates confusion for the pedestrian already on the road when the instructor is telling the student to go, assuming that pedestrian is paying attention to the traffic. As motorists we have a responsibility to everything around us as what we are driving is ultimately a very dangerous machine. Rule number one, never assume. The time to raise this junction with the student was after the junction had passed and maybe have a go again. The rules here do not matter, driver risk assessment does. If you cannot risk assess the road, don’t drive.
Worse not driving if car behind expects you to, and it keeps driving as that is what makes sense to them knowing the traffic laws. At least its low speed here, so a crash wouldn’t be too hard but its the same as letting someone onto the highway or a road when you have right of way, just to be nice. You are causing an unexpected behaviour, which can lead to car collisions.
Or better yet, learn the rules in the country you’re driving in. Ignorance can be corrected with effort of learning and then no one is put out by your failure to educate yourself.

Also, I don't see a pedestrian light for that crossing, so ANY PEDESTRIAN crossing has the PRIORITY, then any vehicle must stop and let them cross.
Those are repeater traffic lights for the traffic waiting on the other side of the junction directly opposite the traffic lights. The lights don't apply to the learner driver because she has a green light to turn right. All you need to know is, if there isn't a stop line then you are not supposed to stop at those lights.

@@vfraddict Honestly I'm of the opinion that these "far side" traffic lights (like they have in the USA) are really dumb. It allows drivers to pass the stop line or cycle box, which means that pedestrians can't cross as easily. It's also really confusing to everyone, as this video shows! To explain the laws behind this incident: - If the lights are on BOTH sides of the road / lane, the light applies to EVERYONE (no matter which road you came from) - If there is only ONE traffic light (on one side of the road), that light ONLY applies to the traffic coming from where it is facing (currently waiting at the lights behind the student when they stopped). In short: multiple lights = always stop; one light = far side light applying only to oncoming cars.
In this instance the red light was just set rather far back from the intersection. It is meant for the straight thru traffic not for the traffic turning into the lane. They came into the lane from a side street.
The video is too short to show how obvious a mistake this is. She's come from the side road and turned into it. Ie the red light is for people on the road she is entering. i dont think she did anything wrong. the man was crossing and the light on road was red?? do the people crossing know that some cars can still go through a red light even if pedestrian light is green? she can filter into that lane in front of lights from where she turned from, but still has to stop at the red light surely, ESPECIALLY while someone is actually about to cross. no wonder so many new drivers are having accidents today if rules say some cars can go through red lights on a pedestrian crossing

In Norway you're required to stop at ANY pedestrians waiting to cross, be it 8 lanes or 2, you are to halt your lane since YOU know there's pedestrians crossing, the drivers behind you doesn't. It is for this reason that of she had NOT stopped she would be instantly failed here and if a driving instructor had this attitude they would be back on the school bench immediately. Instructor cause a stressful situation and the pedestrian would assume the driver intended to stop due to slowing down, hence "keep driving" would be a "run him over as he thinks it's safe" A instructor should act like a finnish rally driver when going off a cliff, calm and cool until the car stops rolling. The video is cut in a way that dosnt help to explain. The junction is a ‘T Junction, that controlled by traffic lights, with the learner joining from thr side road. The main road was set to red with the side road at green so that the learner could proceed. The worse thing here is the pedestrian not saying thanks for allowing to cross the road!
The rear view camera at the bottom of the video shows the stopped traffic to which the red light applies. But the relatively big distance of the light after her right turn would have confused many.

In this case they are particularly advanced for some reason, so when turning right you do approach them head on. This is very unusual hence all the confused comments.
And it wasn’t a very good answer… she should have led with “the red light isn’t for you” rather than “no it’s not!” When it clearly was. That just added to the student’s confusion unfortunately.
She was driving north and turning right into an eastbound lane. The light (out of view) was green for those turning out of the northbound lane. The red light shown here was for cars going straight in the eastbound lane. It would have made zero sense for her to stop.
Hence the confusion. There has to be a line across the road at the lights in front of you for them to apply to you. But remember let the pedestrians go.
Brit here. At junctions there will be a solid white line between two sets of traffic lights. That's where you need to stop if it's red. There's also a third set of lights on the right-hand side of the exit of the junction that I think are there so you can see when the lights change. The junction in this clip has the third set placed way too far from the junction and in the middle of the road making it very confusing. The instructor was right that the light wasn't for the driver, but the driver was right to be cautious. The drivers behind can mind their own business.

the trouble is that the examiner is looking for more than just taking the "safe" option. She must be convinced that the applicant knows all the road rules, including this one, and also that she is competent to let loose on her own. You will fail for not demonstrating confidence and capability, as you should. Imagine how you feel if you pass a learner who promptly kills themselves or others for some silly failure behind the wheel.
@tonycook7679 of course but I'd rather someone only be confident if they truly know what's the right and wrong thing to be doing. Confidence while driving is 100% very important. Hesitation can cause an accident as much as ignorance, but making confident mistakes is way worse. Way easier to avoid accidents with a driver that won't take the right of way when it should vs a driver that will take the right of way when it shouldn't. Even if they're stopping at a green light, that's safer and easier for everyone around them to handle than running a red light. It's still Incredibly dangerous to do but if you have safe stopping distance then you'll have plenty of time to see the car ahead and stop before you crash even if it's just sitting still. I'm not saying this deserves a pass on the test but as far as mentality and how that driver driver defaults to not make rushed decisions and would rather take thinfs slow is a sign that they're thinking safely and won't make a knee jerk reaction when things get confusing or stressful. That light isn't for the learner car. The reason for that is because there are no road markings to indicate a stop line from where the learner has come from. It is, in fact, an "advanced signal" for the traffic already at a red light prior to where the learner joins. So rather than straining your neck to see what the traffic light is doing when next to it, there's a light further on to reference. Look up advanced traffic signals, UK.
@hypotheticalsinglewoody it's not advanced rules, it's advanced traffic signals, so cars can get right up to stop line and not have to strain themselves to see when their light turns green.
Amazing!! In Perth, Western Australia, we have many people who are newly settled from the UK. Our road rules are different from the rules shown in the video clip and can explain why many pedestrians & tourists are nearly killed or have experienced driver's rage here in Perth, Australia. When crossing the road in Australia, pedestrians press the button, wait until the green man appears, and then walk. If you are still walking across the road & the red man begins to flick on & off, the pedestrian still has the right to proceed until they finish crossing. A pedestrian can not enter the crossing if the red man is already flickering. A driver turning left always gives way to the pedestrian already on the road. However, if there's a set of pedestrian registration buttons on traffic lights in the middle on the road, then the pedestrian begins the procedure of crossing the road anew. I can't tell you how many born & bred aussie pedestrians I've had to 'save' from cars that proceed to turn or don't give way to pedestrians. Now, I know where it comes from. Wow!

@@SmithenJW04k Couple of points you don't see from the video (of course, edited to get best reaction), which probably drives your mis-understanding of the layout. This red light is a repeater signal for a primary red light behind the camera car (while it waits for the pedestrian). You can't see this red from the car's starting position, only once you turn into the junction, at which point you're not meant to stop - you only ENTER a junction when it's clear for you to exit. You only stop if the red light shows toward you when there's a solid white line in your lane, as you can see - there isn't one. The crosswalk has its own control over the lights, and only stops traffic if someone presses the button, at which point it would stop ALL lanes that could allow traffic to cross that crosswalk. It's all very logical and functions just fine. This junction is quite long, which means that the learner has dropped out of "junction" mode in their head and gone back into "driving along the road" mode, and sees the repeater as a new signal, not part of the original that they entered, most aren't like this, but the rules still cover this - there's no white line in the road so this light does not relate to you at this point. Of course you'd always stop for the pedestrian crossing anyway, so this "fail" isn't really justified, especially not under the new UK laws where pedestrians crossing normal roads always have priority.
@@CoyoteBoyUKI'm sorry, but shouldn't the repeater light still be placed closer to the start of the road markings? As in closer to the traffic it applies to, like the opposite lane of the dashcam vehicle. I understand that it's supposed to make it easier for the person at the front of the red lights, but placing it this far back seems like it would create unnecessary confusion.
@@SmithenJW04k That's what I meant by it being a long junction and a little unusual, but still covered by the "no solid line, so this light doesn't apply to you" rule, it can't be placed closer because that would be in the middle of the junction and would be inhibiting larger traffic which needs the space to turn (you'd have to put an island and a bollard etc, we don't have hanging repeaters here really and you can't just whap a pole in the roadway because of impact risks). If you're not a new driver, it's intuitive to know where to stop because you're not in an unfamiliar environment - the line-before-lights rule doesn't need to be thought about, because it's second nature once you've driven for a few weeks. I have absolutely made this mistake as a seasoned driver here, but not come to a full stop - just had a moment of "oops...oh, not my lights, carry on".
It's a T-Junction. The street that the driver comes out of at the start of the video has it's own set of lights and by the point in the video, they would've been green. The lights that we see in the video are repeated lights for the cars that are to the left (or behind the driver after she comes into the road fully). The driver in this instance has right of way, but because she stopped, the pedestrian continued to cross.
The rule that catches us out is a solid line across at the lights means stop if light is red but if no line at lights then ignore them, seems it is not taught.but only at these repeater lights, all other traffic lights must be obeyed. See the follow up video.
Something really interesting thats different between england and my country is, we have to stop when a pedestrian as 2 meters from the crossing. But it isnt like that in england
ruclips.net/video/AxN27F7yN-c/видео.html
She updated the video, and explains it as to why.

@@dannyfeller7034 If you want a dump truck to slam into you then by all means...
It should be the right thing to do to stop there, because the pedestrian is likely unaware of what's going on either

It allows drivers to pass the stop line or cycle box, which means that pedestrians can't cross as easily.

To explain the laws behind this incident:
- If the lights are on BOTH sides of the road / lane, the light applies to EVERYONE (no matter which road you came from)
- If there is only ONE traffic light (on one side of the road), that light ONLY applies to the traffic coming from where it is facing (currently waiting at the lights behind the student when they stopped).

The junction in this clip has the third set placed way too far from the junction and in the middle of the road making it very confusing. Good example of how traffic engineers make roads and signals that are too difficult for normal people to discern
I want the people who put the signs at the airport to return to parking by just following the signs they put up, not knowing anything about the road setup. The sign for which exit to take is about 50 feet before the turn after coming around a corner. If you are in the wrong lane you have to take a much longer detour.

Honestly I'm of the opinion that these "far side" traffic lights (like they have in the USA) are really dumb.
It allows drivers to pass the stop line or cycle box, which means that pedestrians can't cross as easily.
It's also really confusing to everyone, as this video shows!
In short: multiple lights = always stop; one light = far side light applying only to oncoming cars.
The explanation is pointless because the infinite amount of brain damage this infrastructure causes outweighs any explanation instead of just fucking fixing this 😂

the trouble is that the examiner is looking for more than just taking the "safe" option.
Half of driving safely is knowing the rules, the other half is just paying attention and having a good reaction to when other people don't follow the rules

Wow!

Whoever placed the traffic lights in the UK must've been high as fuck.
Nah its really obvious when you're not micro focusing 3 inches in front of yourself (as learners tend to do naturally) and you are aware of the junction from an earlier stage.
@@CoyoteBoyUKTheres no logical reason the red light should be placed there instead of the forefront of an intersection. Sure, if you've grown up around roads like this, then its obvious. But just because something works doesn't mean it should. The only reason I can see them placing the red light far foward is because of the crosswalk, but apparently the light has no effect to that crosswalk, so what the fuck UK.
"I'll get to that in a second, ok". I'm still holding my breath.
