Enotria is an ancient term that referred to a region in southern Italy inhabited by the Enotri, a pre-Roman population. The name 'Enotria' comes from the Greek 'oinotria' (from 'oinos', wine), meaning 'land of wine' or 'land of vineyards', as it was known for its wine production. Originally, it referred to a vast area that included present-day Calabria and Basilicata, but in classical times the term was used more generally to describe much of southern Italy.
In the modern context, Enotria is often used as a poetic or symbolic reference to Italy, especially the South, evoking images of ancient traditions and fertile vineyard lands.
