Thanks so much Liz for this posted, I loved it. I do a lot of window displays and I am always looking for new idea, especially when they come complete with your humour.😂❣👏
I once did a pinata for a neighbors child and I just used water and wood glue. Only 8-10 layers then painted it with acrylic paint ( spongebob theme) and they ended up having to get a hammer to bust it open so the kids could get to the candy...so I'll probably use pva glue if I ever make a pinata again😂
@@LizChadertonArt That it did. I was impressed by how quickly you created this. I live near the Gulf of Mexico and it gets very hot here and I put my projects in the sunshine all the time. I heard the Victorian's would make pieces of furniture with 100 layers and then paint and laquer them. Very durable. Really like your egg, very inspiring.
@@LizChadertonArt Only when it's not raining. It's very humid here and if we didn't have mostly sunny days, I'd use an oven or another source of heat. I was lucky enough to visit Essex back in 2003 and much prefer the cooler weather....more so now that I'm older . From what I saw of the UK, it's very beautiful there.
it’s beautiful ❤ is it waterproof with all that glue? i would love to make some (a bit smaller) & put them in our garden.. not sure about the rain though.. 🌧️
I wouldn’t have thought it was waterproof. If going outside I would coat with multiple layers of yacht varnish and make sure the paints are uv resistant so they don’t fade
Awesome work Liz! In your expert crafting opinion ;), if I were to use a balloon much larger than the one you used, will air suffice? I’ve seen some people use starch to fill up their balloon for the mold but wasn’t sure what the difference was between filling it w/ air vs starch
Hi Yari, I’m so sorry, but I don’t know. I don’t think you could get a balloon bigger than this… not in the UK anyways. If it were larger you would need more layers of paper. I did ten and it still has some ‘give’ in places. Sounds like an amzing project to start now for next year!
I love this and I really am going to try it but my question is how can I get newspapers I don't get it at home and I don't know anyone who does either 😅
That's awesome! Once the egg is dried, Is it stiff enought to carve the edges or make a hole on one side of it (so I can place a light weight object inside)? Also, would it keep it's shape if I were to cut about a third off the top of it to make it into a broken egg shell half?
Yes, this one would be okay to make a broken egg or do a cut out. It will depend on the number of layers you've done and the strength of glue. PVA will be stronger than wallpaper paste for example. This all sounds intriguing! What have you got planned?
Thank you for your quick reply Liz. I'm participating in my first Trunk-or-Treat". I'm setting up an alien invasion by creating a space ship on the open trunk with large alien who landed in the trunk. The alien will hold two large eggs each of which will have baby aliens sitting on top of their broken edges. The treats (twisty space straws holding rocket ship lollipops) will be inside the eggs. Oh yes….I am a Type 'A" over achiever LOL. Last question, do you need to let each layer dry before applying the next layer?
@@bridgetmckenna3729 good grief. You’d better get going quick and don’t blame me when you get to layer six and ask Why, oh Why? That sounds amazing. Each layer doesn’t have to be dry, so I put 2 on at a time. It makes sense to dry as much as possible as you go not to trap moisture. It must be firm before popping the balloon and then with that gone more air can circulate to allow for final drying. Good luck!
I don't even know large sources of newspaper anymore... then I realized I have plaster of paris cloth strips and am curious on trying this out with that instead, may use less layers! How much did yours weigh after creation? Thanks!
Though cloth strips are a brilliant idea! That never occurred to me. It only weighed 5-6 lbs/ 3 or so kilos…. which is why it rolled down the road at one point! The plaster will be heavier but might be more durable.
Oh no, how annoying. I'm afraid I did this several years ago and I have no idea about the supplier. I just got it off Amazon - it was the biggest I could find.
Thank you so much for your video! I work at a children’s theater and we will attempt to make one that can fit a child! Any words of advice if we’re trying to do it in 2 pieces(like a cracked egg)? Do you think we just create the whole thing and saw it in half after it’s done? Thanks in advance!
yes, that’s what I’d do. make a single egg, then cut it and maybe reinforce the cut edges with a bit more papier mache. You might have to do extra layers as the complete egg is intrinsically stronger than two halves.
Wow. Your patience paid off. I told my son we were going to make huge paper mache' eggs. About 50 large ones. Then I found your video. Ain't no way...I'm dropping the number dow to 3. Does it have to be 10 layers, is there a specific glue or recommended brand and same amount water as the glue?
Wooooh, 50????? You are ambitious! 3 is ambitious!! And my top tip is make sure you can get it through the doors of your house. This can't go through our internal doors. Luckily we have a double door to the outside! So for this size 10 layers is about right. It still has a little squash to it even with 10. A bit smaller and you could get away with fewer. It uses lots of glue, so I just went to the DIY shop and get a gallon of the cheapest PVA they had. PVA is a lot stronger than wallpaper glue, and I think that's important for this size. It really doesn't matter the brand. Watch out, some have fungicides in them. I don't know how old your son is, but you might want to be careful. Yes equal parts water and glue, I found worked well. And you needs lots of paper!!! Good luck!

How you make this to not look spheric?.....yours have one smaller sphere radius at top giving it the egg typical shape.
The balloon I used was a 90cm one but was a typical balloon shape so perfect for an egg, you should be able to see in the film.
