      Crystal Ball required. Until recently Money Saving "Expert" kept saying that very few people would exceed the £1000 limit. Now you could do it with around £25000. Less than the price of most new cars. Also consider that a train driver doing a few overtime shifts could easily reach the higher tax threshold where the limit drops to £500.

    Dear Pete. Would you mind answering a quick question for me? If someone was to pay in a lump sum of 20k into a S&S ISA in any given tax year then does that mean they couldn’t then set up a direct debit as this would take them over their allowance?

    • @MeaningfulMoney
      @MeaningfulMoney  Месяц назад +1

      That’s right. Unless the DD started in the new year. So it’s April 4th while I’m typing this. If you paid in £20k lump sum into your ISA now, as long as the DD stared after April 6th, you’d be fine

    What does the end of tax year mean? Why is it significant to invest during this time?

    • @MeaningfulMoney
      @MeaningfulMoney  Месяц назад

      Certain allowances, for example the ISA allowance, reset each year. So if you don’t use them by April 5th then those allowances are ‘lost’. That’s why there’s always a rush to get certain payments made around this time of year.

    I’m curious as to why you are advising setting up a direct debit when it should be a standing order. DDs are for when a company is claiming money from you and they can choose how much, so are normally used for utility bills etc. When an individual is sending money and wants to control the amount you use a Standing Order.

    • @MeaningfulMoney
      @MeaningfulMoney  2 месяца назад

      While that's true technically, many providers will pull the money by direct debit and may not give you the option. You are covered by the Direct debit guarantee though, and with any modern provider you can log in at any time and change the amount being contributed, so practically, it makes little difference

    Had no clue about a LISA and missed the age limit

    • @MPD90
      @MPD90 2 месяца назад

      A LISA is good for saving for your first home. Beyond that, putting more in your pension is usually a better option. Higher rate tax payers are better off contributing the extra to their pension over a LISA, as the tax saving is greater than the government bonus on a LISA. Basic rate tax payers will see the same benefit between contributing to a pension and contributing to a LISA (i.e. to put £5k in the pot you could either put £4k in a LISA and gov grosses up to £5k, or put £5k in a pension and tax saving nets the cost down to £4k, even result either way). So you probably haven't missed much 👍

      @@shellyperera2010 Personally I'd disagree. LISA you pay the income tax before you put it in, pension you pay the income tax after you withdraw it. Listen to the video again, the options, once you open an ISA on your chosen platform, then you must choose the fund or funds you want to put your money into, ie in your case the S&P 500. Just make sure the platform you choose has the S&P500 on it as platforms do differ.

      First of all the S&P 500 is an index which you can invest in through a fund that tracks it. It’s not an alternative to an ISA.
      An ISA is a tax wrapper that gives you the platform to invest in a fund - for example the S&P 500.
      And the reason it’s important is because all capital gains and all income from that fund is tax free, forever. You might not think that’s important now but as your investment grows over time, you would likely pay tax on your investment gains if it’s not in an ISA.
      So why would you not choose an ISA??!

      You can buy S&P500 inside your ISA

      I love paying tax, that’s why I don’t use an ISA said no one ever 🙄
      Simply buy an index fund (S&P500 if you so desire) and put it in your ISA.

      This!!! Also you can buy MicroStrategy and put it in your ISA. Which is as a good as (if not better than) buying bitcoin

      @@kw8757 To be fair, currency has no intrinsic value either since the gold standard was abolished. Not that I'm a bitcoin fan.
