    Most the Smile sessions were recorded before Sgt Pepper as released. Paul McCartney apparently dropped by during the recording of Vegetables and is said to have chewed celery on the recording.

    surfin' safari is what it sounds like : a bunch of kids. the beach boys were never a garage band. they were a living room band. surfin' usa is a HUGE improvement; a giant leap forward. the lonely sea is one of my all time favorite songs. the first glimpse we get of bw's more melancholy side. to me surfer girl, little Deuce Coupe, shut down volume 2, all summer long, Christmas album, TODAY! (my all time favorite album by ANYONE), summer days/nights, pet sounds, SMiLE! sessions, smiley smile (in the 70's this album was my favorite album by anyone of the previous decade, then i heard TODAY! and the doors's debut), wild honey, friends and 20/20 are all classic albums. i don't really count party! as a studio album. i could live without it. i like most of sunflower. i like much of surf's up. i really can't get into much of carl/passions and holland. i appreciate them more than i actually enjoy them. Mount Vernon and Fairway however is amazing. 15 big ones is/was a HUGE disappointment. the bb recorded it under duress. their label was threatening to sue them for not meeting the obligations of their contract. they owed the label two more records.they went into the studio and attempted to record two albums at once. they were going to record one album of covers and one album of new material, but the clock was ticking and they were running out of time. so they presented what they had recorded thus far as one album to buy them more time. this album should have been either all covers or all new material, not a mash-up. around this time they also recorded their second Christmas album hoping that would fullfill their contract, but the label rejected it. they did not want a Christmas album. it would take decades for this material /their second Christmas album to finally be released. LOVE YOU is my favorite album of the 70's. it is their last truly great, classic album. it was the last time they attempted to move forward. originally love you was to be a solo brian album called brian loves you. special note should be made of nearly every member of the band walked out during love you's recording process not knowing what to make of what brian was doing; dennis and carl MAY have hung around the studio more than the others. after this the bb stopped even atempting to move forward. mike love seized control of the band. they then proceeded to attempt and failed to regain their former, early era glory. i wish they had retired the BB name or retiring from recording after love you. the beach boys are my all time favorite band, but i do not listen to any of their post 1977 love you albums. even bruce says they sound like old men on MIU. l.a. light album has a very few good songs, but everything else post-love you i just wish would cease to exist. still crusin' to me isn't a studio album; just a compilation with left overs. That's Why God Made the Radio is a good reunion album.

    "The Beach Boys Today" IS like the group's "Rubber Soul, because it was the first album to showcase Brian's exploding talent. "Summer Days and Summer Nights" is the band's "Help" even though it came out *after* "TBBT." That is because "SDASN" was a step backward in the bands development (while still being a fine album).

    • @chrisfreeman9960
      @chrisfreeman9960 10 месяцев назад +1

      "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) was a step backward because the suits at Capitol Records didn't like the more thoughtful, contemplative music Brian had done on "The Beach Boys' Today." They wanted Brian to do more lighter, fun themes he had done on earlier albums. They didn't want to hear songs such as "She Knows Me Too Well."
      I'm sure if Brian had been left alone, he could have made "Summer Days..." a great album for the summer, with fun songs, as well as more thoughtful ones, and made it the equal of "Today."

    I didn't really start listening to the Beach Boys very much until the Endless Summer (74) compilation started showing up in everyone's album collections in high school in about 1975. They also had a few big live concert broadcasts on TV which were great. Music magazines started calling them one of the best live acts of the decade!
    They were still milking the nostalgia cow pretty hard in the late 70s. They caught the peak of the 20 year long 1950s (and early 60s) revival wave which started in the late 60s, peaked in the mid to late 70s and didn't fizzle out until about 1990.
    Sadly, I never caught one of their live shows in person. It was strange to hear my fellow Hard Rock fans raving about how good the Beach Boys were in concert. They covered a huge demographic in the 70s.
    Unfortunately, their great popularity during the nostalgia revival period, severely stunted my growth as a Beach Boys fan. I never got into any of their best creative years that came before I was an avid music fan. I remained an early complilation album type of fan for most of my life until the past two years. Now, I cant seem to get enough of them, even though at least one third of their albums are pretty crappy.
    Many of their late 60s to early 70s albums have grown on me immensley. There's an interesting general music topic for you, growers. For me, the biggest growers in the BB catalog have been, Love You, Carl and the Passions, Holland, Wild Honey and Smiley Smile.
    The more I watch concert footage, the more I realize that Carl Wilson was the beating heart of the Beach Boys as a live act, especially during most the 70s and early 80s. If Dennis is the unsung artist of the band, then Carl is the unsung hero of the Beach Boys.

      Yeah after Holland they really just dropped off in quality. I like the Love You album but feel its a bit more singular in terms of who is going to like it. In general I feel bad for the band though their newest record with That's Why God Made the Radio probably ended on the best note they could have gotten considering the lack of ambition and cohesion between the members

    Okay aside from little factual errors + too much "but," especially with "yeah" following. Means nothing, time-wasting phrase or just annoying. Have to agree on choices except wh (among their best ever) and sdv2. Best option: redo it minus unimportant words constantly repeated. Will be tighter/improved.

      @dustandmoonlight286 We Americans pronounce it, Doose Coop. If you saw the film American Graffiti, then you've seen a yellow Deuce Coupe. Just do a search for " John Milner's Coupe". He's the James Dean-like character in the movie, who is in love with racing his yellow hotrod.
      The 1932 Ford Coupe is one of the most iconic hotrod platforms of 1950s and early 1960s car racing culture. Deuce (Two) is used as a nickname for 32. One look at the car would already tell you that it's from the 1930s. "Deuce Coupe" let's you know that it's a 32 Ford. Coupe means a two door car vs a sedan which has 4 doors.
      In the 50s and 60s, older Fords from the 30s weren't worth very much money and they had a lot of room under the hood for bigger, more modern Chevy engines. Therefore, they were good street drag racing platforms for young people to build on. They also had nice curves and an aesthetic body style which made them desirable. Today, a lightly restored Deuce Coupe would start at $40K and a show car would be over $100K. During the Beach Boys early days, you could buy one with money from your burger flipping job after school.
      One of the most misheard lyrics in music history relates to a Deuce Coupe. Many people who are unfamiliar with vintage cars, don't know what the term means. So, when Bruce Springsteen wrote Blinded by the Light and Manfred Man later covered it and made it an iconic Rock radio song, most people screwed up the lyrics and they still do.
      The song contains many colorful metaphors about city life. The line in question is "Revved up like a Deuce, another runner in the night." This means a fast (runner), loud 32 Ford, revving it's engine.
      Many people misheard the lyric as "Wrapped up like a douche another rumor in the night which makes zero sense. 😂

    Like every other Beach Boys album ranker, you are underrating "All Summer Long" and "Summer Days and Summer Nights," while overrating the terribly average "Friends," "Smiley Smile" and "Surf's Up." And "Smile" was not actually a released album (the sessions from it do not count), so you cannot include that if you are ranking "Beach Boys Studio Albums."

    • @Helljumper91
      @Helljumper91 8 месяцев назад +1

      If "every other" album ranker does the same thing, then maybe that's the general consensus and your opinion is the one that differs. There's nothing wrong with that, but just because you think a certain way about them doesn't make others incorrect.
      Also the Smile Sessions was a released box set, so at this current moment it would definitely still count as an album imo.

    • @mikeymutual5489
      @mikeymutual5489 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@Helljumper91 (1) The Smile Sessions were just that - a collection of sessions. It was not a fully-composed finished studio album, and so if your criterion is "Beach Boys Studio Albums," then it definitely *doesn't* fit. (2) I only mentioned a couple of early albums that seemed to be too overlooked by reviewers. So even if my bias is towards Brian Wilson written and produced albums, those are the only two that I would point to that are badly undervalued by reviewers. (3) The music that everyone loves and replays endlessly is the early Beach Boys music. Just because reviewers think that they are so clever by overrating later albums doesn't actually make them right, when the public actually loves the earlier music more. So maybe those reviewers are just all wrong. Consider that.

    • @snowinaz
      @snowinaz  5 месяцев назад

      @@mikeymutual5489Honestly I say studio albums but if a record is good enough I'd include it on a list anyways. Like if I were ranking Nirvanas, I'd at least mention MTV Unplugged because I like it more than any studio LP. Also I will say All Summer Long and Summer Days have both grown on me even more with time. They're truly great records. Though this is all 100% just my opinion. *I* LOVE Friends, and Surfs Up so it doesn't matter to me if they're overrated or underrated. That's just how I feel of them. I honestly prefer when The Beach Boys got more experimental and lofi and weirder. I appreciate the energy and youthfulness of their surf sound, but I think my favorite music is the kind you could say sounds like falling in love to.
      Their earlier music has songs like that, but for me the later records really go deep into melancholy and beauty. I'd also like to point out the two most played Beach Boys songs on radio nowadays (at least for me, I can be wrong in general but im pretty sure they're the highest streamed on spotify) are Wouldn't It Be Nice and Good Vibrations. I honestly unfortunately hear Kokomo play more than ALL their songs. I *wish* I heard the surf stuff more XD, but 1960s music seems to be dying off the radio in recent times.

    • @snowinaz
      @snowinaz  5 месяцев назад

      @@Helljumper91Honestly I say studio LPs but when ranking bands I'll include a live record or box set if I really love it. I mentioned in another comment responding to the other person but I would include MTV Unplugged for a Nirvana ranking, because it's my favorite thing they've ever made, so yeah. I honestly don't care if it's 'wrong', I just like talking about stuff I love

    • @mikeymutual5489
      @mikeymutual5489 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@snowinaz Well, if you consider Pet Sounds a "later record," then I agree with you about the "melancholy and beauty." After that, the records became about flowers and TM (already out of style when released), before returning to their "fun in the sun sound" in "Sunflower." While that was a fine album, the Beach Boys never attained the heights of the 1960's again, mainly because Brian became a shell of himself. But by then, he and the band had already released dozens of classic rock songs, so there was no reason to have to fight to make the best record anymore.
      So if we were going to be honest, according to your scale, only "Pet Sounds" and "The Beach Boys Today" would be on your top tier. On the second tier would be "Summer Days and Summer Nights." "All Summer Long" and "Sunflower." All the rest of the albums would take up the other tiers. That is because while the band released lots of albums, albums were never really their forte (except for "Pet Sounds"). Always look to the singles for the best music. Or the songs on "Endless Summer." The music on that album alone qualifies Brian as America's greatest music composer.
