    My favorite element is mercury. As a young teen in high school in 1951, my science teacher gave me samples of different elements to use in the Museum of Science and Industry Science Fair in Chicago. I found the metal liquid amazing and played with it for hours. I learned a few years ago that a Chinese emperor had made an underground city with rivers of mercury to mimic water. I have also learned that mercury is dangerous to handle. I wonder if they have tried mercury with another element in their tests.

    I think it is completely ridiculous to say things like "We can use it to build things we never even dreamed of." How on earth can anyone make that claim? If we made a new stable element, there is no way to know for sure what its properties will be and how it behaves. It could be toxic and destructive for all we know.

    • @NOVAPLEX240

    As the number of protons in an atomic nucleus increase, the number of neutrons required to keep the element stable increases disproportionately.
    As far as proton to neutron ratios go though, Tritium has the greatest number of neutrons per proton at 2:1. Being a light element though it doesn't really need that many. I do think that any future stable elements will have to be extremely heavy, as the range of the strong force weakens with distance. The protons are constantly prying the nucleus apart, thus requiring more neutrons to help better cancel out the proton's repulsive tendency.
    Alternatively, one could introduce the use of Strange Quarks, of which may also increase the stability of nuclei by reducing the amount of space between baryons, allowing the strong force to interact with nuclei.

    • @adamdictatedbutnotreadkadh8719
      @adamdictatedbutnotreadkadh8719 8 лет назад +10

      all elements break down. these just have really short half life's because the larger the element the more unstable tho has exceptions

    • @adamdictatedbutnotreadkadh8719
      @adamdictatedbutnotreadkadh8719 8 лет назад +1

      ***** keep in mind these are atomic nuclei which are smallest units of matter so the larger the more unstable because these are single nuclei. To even create the element they needed to combine elements and it would be created for short amounts of time hence Julia mentioning leaving the so called "island of stability" (nice name btw)

      +ken mac Every single element with atomic number higher than that of lead (82 Pb) breaks down into other isotopes of other elements. It's what radioactivity is. When a very large atom nucleus is unstable, so it breaks down into a smaller nucleus in order to become stable. Regardless of what (radioactive) element it is, it will always end up breaking down into another element.

    element 115 is called ununtanium. Ununtanium is like a super conductor. When constructed in a coil, the amount of electronic conduction is so strong, it creates a reverse magnet effect, similar polarities, and actually can make the object applied, levitate. The problem is it would need a super conductor too large for the object applied

    I'd say an infinite amount of elements exist. You just need to find a way to fuse them regardless of how difficult it may be.
    They take on new forms AND are impossible because it's logical that a new part of an atom changes the way it functions.
    Just most cannot be stable by logic.

    • @aguyonasiteontheinternet578
      @aguyonasiteontheinternet578 Год назад

      some scientists say that the table ends at 173, because the electrons would have to orbit the nucleus at faster than the speed of light.
      that, and the possibility that at one point, the half-life becomes so short that the nucleus cannot even have the time to form an electron cloud around it. if the nucleus is truly incapable of forming an electron cloud before it disintegrates, or if its’ half-life is shorter than the time takes for an electron cloud to form, then it cannot form a complete atom, and since elements are made of atoms of itself only, it therefore cannot be considered an element.

    3:16 "No Theoretical Limit to How big elements can get."
    The Pauli-exclusion principle kind-of puts a limit on nucleus size. Fermions (protons and neutrons) must inhabit different states inside the nucleus. Once the lowest energy states are filled up, protons and neutrons must occupy higher energy states, making the nucleus less stable, and more likely to decay.
    You can make heavy elements, but they aren't going to be stable.

    My favorite element at the moment is Ar, that is, argon. Reason I like it? I have a tank of argon gas in my garage, waiting for me to use it to shield the metal I am welding. Welding raises the temperature of metal so high that the presence of oxygen can cause the metal to start burning! To avoid that, we bathe the weld area in a stream of argon gas. Argon is one of the inert gases. It cannot support burning. The argon stream keeps oxygen away from the area being heated for welding.
