Great explanation & dissertation on the operation and use of manual splitter & skiving machines! Thank you very much!!
I've never seen such a machine. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing ,Well demonstrated Harry
I have been bing watching your videos lately as I have recently taken up leather crafting.I truly appreciate your pristine and precise attention to detail! I was thinking how great it is in our time that I have the technology of the internet /youtube that gives me the opportunity to learn from a master artisan such as yourself .Thank you so much for your very noble contribution by sharing your skills knowledge and experience.Kudos to you.
Thanks
I just bought one of these old Dixon splitters in a deceased estate purchase...
The fellow who owned and used it, died fifteen years ago and his workshop was just locked up and all but forgotten.
The workshop was a treasure trove of great leatherwork stuff. All, just as he had left it.
The splitter, in spite of all the dust and cobwebs, was still razor sharp!
Cheers
Dallas Nyberg You are very lucky....good it's gone to a good home.
Thank you Harry... I have a lot of sorting and cleaning to do. However, it will be worth the effort and it will all be used with much love and respect....Cheers
I don't do any leather work, but I sure do enjoy your videos.
Thanks very much.
Very interested Harry i have never seen a machine like that before Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and skill i diffidently need to order a belt soon
Thanks Michael
Thankss Harry!!
A very insightful video Harry and great work on the restoration of it ~Peace~
I have exactly the same machine and also spent hours on the blade. It's a great machine but I find the adjustment wheel a little notchy so I always cut a practice piece to set the depth. I've had it for around 2 years and only sharpened the blade once. it still cuts clean and true.
That's good..thanks
Those bright blue Record “cramps” as I’ve heard them called in the UK stand out. I have a few dozen and am occasionally weepy about that fine company going out of business.
Thanks for the sliver info. I need one…
very nice
where i can get this awesome tools ?
Harry I have enjoyed your comments. Where is the best location of the blade to the roller on my splitter/skiver. is a negative 5 degrees above top dead center the proper alignment? Thanks Wayne Johnson Buzzsaw Leather.
Hi Wayne...that sounds about right....I keep the cutting edge a bit behind tdc of the roller.
I am looking for a used skiver for belts and a spliter
Hello, I wonder, what sort of sliver would you recommend for softer less thick leather please? I have tried everything except getting the expensive industrial machines.
Hi A clone machine skiver works great on thinner leather...I have not tried others.
I would love to see a tutorial on sharpening this blade.
So would I!! I have just purchased one of these and am keen to become the Queen of sharpening. I've always been lazy about tool sharpening. Time to change my ways
I want a 6 in or 8" for skiving. Can you suggest some company that make those . Thanks
Osborne Tools make a very good one.
Q. Why do you put a tepered edge for buckles and use the thickest part on top? What I mean is, wouldn't it be btter to put the buckle in a piece of leather that was 1/2 the thickness of rest of it? Then overall it would be the same thickness as the rest of the belt or would that be too weak?
Jim Black Jim you are right it would be a bit weak...certainly a weak point if we did that.
So the fold where the buckle rests is the thickest part, or just slightly thinner?
Jim Black thins off just after buckle
Thank you very much. Great videos.
So that's skiving off. :)
Que precio tiene esa maquina por favor!?
manu aro Dixon's.. .no longer made.
Hi,
Where did you get the skiver from ?
Hi Mark -its a secondhand one...try ebay perhaps
Harry Rogers yeah I've been looking on eBay, no luck yet though. Thanks anyway.
Don't mind if I tell you, that blade is really not sharp, with a sharp blade you don't have to make such an effort, I have a JOK machine, J.Polland - Wien 1 Bakerstr 5/7 - the dates written on it, done in Austria, but I sharpened the blade with a Belgian stone, it cuts like a knife through butter, I don't have the courage to play with my hand like you played with yours, I had the bad idea to use my fingernail let me try the cutter, it cut my nail to the flesh, I can cut slices of only 1 mm without any problem, in addition, this machine has the advantage that it also has a steering wheel with a crank, and if you want to thin very thin, no you pull the leather but you turn the steering wheel, a real gem, I was lucky enough to buy it from someone who didn't really know what he was selling, 100 euros, yes! and the thinning is controlled by a special graduated device on the left side, where if you want to go graduated, it has a lever that you pull with an indicator at which level of cutting you are... if you find such a toy, I recommend it buy it, you won't regret it, Osborne is a small child next to this gem
