As a kid when I got a PS1 and then a teen via PS2, I wasn't creeped out by the facial expressions or the graphics. I was awestruck of what was going on.
Somewhat related, but when I was a kid, I went to a friend's house to play on his PlayStation 2 for the first time. When the startup screen turned on, I legit started crying because I was scared of it, lol.
Same here, except it was Vice City. It was pouring rain and he was just standing in the street with a minigun. The bullet trails, the blurry neon lights, the sounds, the explosions. I openly wept unintentionally. My eyes just couldn't handle it. Those were the days.
Bra Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Parasite Eve fkd me up as a kid, i thought my parents would get mad at me and i shouldnt be playing them so i used to sneak around and play them at like 1am lol, the worst thing i could of done as a kid, there was something about the early days of 3D games that left so much up to the imagination. edit: lol i should of finished the vid, you said the same thing and about the same exact games.
@lukaskubinec9608 holy shit forgot that was a thing, i never had it, my cuz did, all i remember is a mansion stage where he was burning everything with magic or some shit and a cutscene with a creepy kid with a doll.
I remember when I was a kid and my mom brought me Resident evil 2. 🧟♂️ 🧟♀️ Me and my siblings made a pact that we were gonna wait until night to play, it and turn off all the lights. That was a terrible decision because that game creeped me TF out. 😂
Even Mega Man Legends, one of the brightest and most colourful / goofy games on the platform, couldn't escape the spooky dark aesthetic. Going from Apple Market to the Ruins is always a whiplash that I love. It's dark. The ambience sounds like the ruins are breathing. You hear clanking in the distance.
I always wondered why PS1 had this creepy atmosphere to it, like it feels like anything could jump out at you wile you were in one of those game worlds
PS1 and PS2 graphics have a certain charm to them that i still greatly appreciate. And i love the etherial feel they give off, especially in games like Spyro for example. The worlds in those games just feel so dream like and fun to explore, i love it so much!
My favorite PSI games I remember as a kid: - Digimon World 3 - Tekken 3 - Marvel VS Capcom - Crash Bandicoot: Cortex Strikes Back/Warped - Knockout Kings 2000 (RIP Muhammad Ali 🕊️🕊️🕊️) - Fighting Force - Hot Wheels: Extreme Racing - Crash Team Racing - Final Fantasy 7 - Tony Hawk Pro Skater (Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Elissa Steamer, Bam Margera...etc.) Forgotten PSI mascots: - Poy Poy, Blasto, Jersey Devil, Punky Skunk
I am in my late 20s, and a few months back, I played Silent Hill 1 on my PC. When I started playing, it made me creeped out when Harry went deeper into the streets and witnessed dead corpses, and at last, those zombie children killed you.The atmosphere was so haunting that I found myself looking over my shoulder, half-expecting to see something lurking in the shadows. Despite the fear, I couldn't help but appreciate the game's storytelling and how it masterfully built tension throughout the experience.
I loved DW3 when I was a kid but never finished it. I revisited it on an emulator a couple years ago and being able to play with a speed multiplier helped the grind a lot and made it a much smoother experience.
I had a ps1 controller without the joy sticks. We had a few generic controllers too with some odd features. The controller without the joy sticks were surprisingly comfortable given your thumbs weren't pressed against the oddly joy stick part.
In Tenchu : birth of the stealth assassin, in the very last stage dwells a terror of its own. You have to move from boats to boats to fight enemies, but should you fall in the murky waters, you're in for a nasty surprise. There is an enormous shark lurking in there, and you cannot defend yourself at all! 😱He makes no noise whatsoever, and it's a night time level so you don't see much ahead of you to begin with. Your best bet is to swim as fast as you can and try to climb on the nearest boat, but more often than not the shark will just bite you relentlessly until you're dead.😵It can only be killed with bombs or fire arrows (if you're standing on a boat). The first time I encountered it, I could feel my heartbeat go faster as I was completely defenseless and not expecting it due to the fact that in any other level where you can swim, there is no fish nor anything that can hurt you in the water.😐
Pretty sure it’s because he pronounced Final Fantasy 7 as Final Fantasy Vee Eye Eye, the way a machine would pronounce the Roman numeral VII. Definitely made me do a mental double take for sure.
You missed the Dino Demo before any games officially launched. It was a showcase in graphical power for the time, but against the black abyss. It truly was scary.
Great points on all fronts! A stand out for the breathing walls and draw distance in my mind is Soul Reaver. It made everything otherworldly and immersive. Also, agreed, pre-rendered backgrounds were amazing. Indeed a lost art, emphasis on the art. Those FF "Vee Eye Eye" and FF "Eye Ecks" backgrounds are amazing pieces of art that work amazing simply as art prints In short, lots of different ways to suck you into the world of the game.
I also don't hear enough ppl talk about how immersive tank controls were. We had to put ourselves in the character's shoes, and move to their left or right not process it as a 3rd person view.
1:10 Sony had some involvement in the gaming space.::designing the snes sound chip, developing some decent games…but we didn’t just know them from the Walkman, they were a ubiquitous name in electronics. Stereos, TV’s, Clock radios…so many damn things. Sony was everywhere
I got my playstation when I was 6 and my dad took it to this guy he worked with who made it so it could read games on burnt discs and I had pretty much every game for the system. That many options of games was crazy at the time and I played some games I definitely shouldn't but that was my first console and I honestly wouldn't have it any other way My favourite games were crash, spyro, croc, medieval, and Syphon filter
Part of it is that your brain is working overtime to fill in what isn’t clear or what you can’t see. Silent Hill holds up because the limited graphics make it more scary. The fog was added because of loading times and issues. The doors in early Resident evil games having doors as well. These limitations later became a part of the iconography.
My favorite console of all time. These graphics are so nostalgic for me. Spyro, Gex, Silent Hill… man this was my childhood. Just replayed Silent Hill on my old ass tv and my PlayStation
Great video man! Even in Gex Enter The Gecko and Deep Cover Gecko it has some creepy elements to it that make it memorable and appealing to this day. I love the PS1 aesthetic! There's just something about the graphics and color schemes of these games that I find warmth from too. I was a kid when I first got the PS1 and over time I just have such nostalgia for it of course, but nonetheless the feeling is real that we get from PS1 gaming.
Idk why but Tekken 3 used to give an eerie/creepy vibe when I played it as a kid. Especially the end cutscene when you beat the arcade mode as Jin and Hwoarang
at last someone talk about the elephant in the room until today I legitly scared to play RE3 PS1 myself home alone because if the ambience and the horror of it and the way the zombie look even RE2 PS1 for that matter
The late 90s' were aesthetically darker and edgier than any decade before or since so it's no surprise that bled into the PS1 era graphical style. Also, any particular reason why the next video is skipping from the original XBox and straight to the 360?
I love MVG’s video about the technical reasons why PS1 graphics look like that. The lack of floating point precision for vertex positions causing the wobbly polygons is particularly interesting.
Even the console start-up sound was somewhat ominous but I got hyped hearing it every time, like a huge adventure was waiting on the other side. To me, the PS1 is the very definition of nostalgia.
I was doing Tofu Attempt runs in RE2 and couldn't handle the Atmosphere of Silent Hill. The Fog and the White Noise Radio... Yea. I was good... Baby Zombies... lol
Those low resolution, polygonal graphics with their low render and pixelated look, imo helped to make games like the first resident evil and the first silent Hill, even more scary and creepy?!! As well as as it did with the games that came after! But I'll never forget that first time running into that creepy big mansion in resident evil one for the first time all the way back in 1996!!!
Limitations force creativity. It forced a lot of players to fill in the gaps with their own imaginations. I think that's why we still remember them so well today.
PE2 is possibly thee most underrated game of all time on any console for its genre and i will die with that statement. Completely mind boggling how incredible the story is and how its not a movie.
I think its the consoles limitations, devs hard to find work atounds for everything they wanted to do and as hardware got stringer things got easier which imo worsened a lot of the experiences we get now especially when a game is constantly remastered Limitation breeds inovation, its why i also think most older movies still stamd the test of time because of the Hayes Code

Did you pronounce 7 as "Vee eye eye"?
I came here only to say this too ....this made me mad 😂. OC never went to school or it's ai i guess....
Just as annoying as whenever FFX or X-2 are referred to as "Ex" and "Ex Two".
Thumbed down the video just for that
this is AI voice
I expected nothing else from kids
Somewhat related, but when I was a kid, I went to a friend's house to play on his PlayStation 2 for the first time. When the startup screen turned on, I legit started crying because I was scared of it, lol.
Valid reaction tbh
LOL
Ayy LMAO 🤣
Same here, except it was Vice City. It was pouring rain and he was just standing in the street with a minigun.
The bullet trails, the blurry neon lights, the sounds, the explosions. I openly wept unintentionally. My eyes just couldn't handle it.
Those were the days.
Have you accepted your sexuality now or still struggling with accepting your team? 😂
I've been playing *Resident Evil* almost every middle of the night since its inception.
And somehow, my sleep paralysis demons are still mad at me.
silent hill 3 is my favorite in the series, but the atmosphere of 1 can’t be replicated
Based take
We NEED more indie games inspired by PS1 and Sega Saturn graphics.
It can lol
Right there with you on SH1 and 3, 2 never impressed me though.
SH3 is my second favorite SH game & I hope they don't ruin SH1 remake.
Audio design in PS 1 games were very ominous for some reason games that pop out are the Soul Reaver game and Doom on PS1
Final Fantasy Vee Aye Aye LMAO
Bra Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Parasite Eve fkd me up as a kid, i thought my parents would get mad at me and i shouldnt be playing them so i used to sneak around and play them at like 1am lol, the worst thing i could of done as a kid, there was something about the early days of 3D games that left so much up to the imagination.
edit: lol i should of finished the vid, you said the same thing and about the same exact games.
Parasite Eve was just...amazing.
Let's not forget Galerians either. It was an awesome title for its day.
@lukaskubinec9608 holy shit forgot that was a thing, i never had it, my cuz did, all i remember is a mansion stage where he was burning everything with magic or some shit and a cutscene with a creepy kid with a doll.
Tomb Raider still makes new players jump more than movies.
I remember when I was a kid and my mom brought me Resident evil 2. 🧟♂️ 🧟♀️ Me and my siblings made a pact that we were gonna wait until night to play, it and turn off all the lights. That was a terrible decision because that game creeped me TF out. 😂
best mom ever
Don't get started spider or licker

Megaman Legends💛🤍👌🤍💛
I always wondered why PS1 had this creepy atmosphere to it, like it feels like anything could jump out at you wile you were in one of those game worlds
Bro your thumbnails are TOP TIER!
I remember as a kid being scared as hell by the Alien Trilogy game and the T-Rex from one of the PS1 demos :D
I loved alien trilogy but never got very far :(
PS1 and PS2 graphics have a certain charm to them that i still greatly appreciate. And i love the etherial feel they give off, especially in games like Spyro for example. The worlds in those games just feel so dream like and fun to explore, i love it so much!
I love the remakes of spyro trilogy for that reason alone
My favorite PSI games I remember as a kid:
- Digimon World 3
- Tekken 3
- Marvel VS Capcom
- Crash Bandicoot: Cortex Strikes Back/Warped
- Knockout Kings 2000 (RIP Muhammad Ali 🕊️🕊️🕊️)
- Fighting Force
- Hot Wheels: Extreme Racing
- Crash Team Racing
- Final Fantasy 7
- Tony Hawk Pro Skater (Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Elissa Steamer, Bam Margera...etc.)
Forgotten PSI mascots:
- Poy Poy, Blasto, Jersey Devil, Punky Skunk

Mortal Kombat Trilogy and WWF Smackdown! For me
I loved DW3 when I was a kid but never finished it. I revisited it on an emulator a couple years ago and being able to play with a speed multiplier helped the grind a lot and made it a much smoother experience.
shoutout to fighting force, one of my favorite beat em up experiences with my buddy
the PS1's and early PS2's marketing was glorious 90's/2000s brainrot. Pure perfection
For making this I love you like a brother in law
13:10 did he really say "Final Fantasy V-I-I" like that😂
My phone decided to buffer right on PS1 Hagrid's face... 😅
Metal Gear Solid 1 creeped me out as a kid despite it not even being a horror game 😂 That Pyscho Mantis battle was wild!
Didn't even make a passing reference to the opening screen of the PS1, it's like you were TRYING to piss me off 😭
V, i, i, was that a Blabs reference?
In the future ExtraMint will have to make a retrospect of the AI esthetic
NIGHTMARE CREATURES!
Creepy game with a killer soundtrack!
I had a ps1 controller without the joy sticks. We had a few generic controllers too with some odd features. The controller without the joy sticks were surprisingly comfortable given your thumbs weren't pressed against the oddly joy stick part.
Hey, what's the CRT filter in the footage? It looks great
Yo thanks! I made it myself in Davinci Resolve
1:36 Martin mentioned ❤
W slushy
Another banger 😇
You have the best thumbnails on this entire site big dog
Thank you bro 🙏🙏
This is excellent stuff, my friend. subbed
Ingenuity thrives with limited technology
also protected us from bullshit like microtransactions
And powerful hardware kindles goonslopping.
@Irthiza What's wrong with gooner games?
90s and Y2K were golden years for many of us, solid video.
8:59 Sure put that on screen without a warning! I DIDNT WANNA SLEEP TONIGHT ANYWAY!
Parasite Eve 2 lol
overblood mentioned thumbs up and subscribed

Some folks here have been huffing too much paint. Why is Mint getting accused of being AI now?
Pretty sure it’s because he pronounced Final Fantasy 7 as Final Fantasy Vee Eye Eye, the way a machine would pronounce the Roman numeral VII. Definitely made me do a mental double take for sure.
@BushidoblaccI've been here from the beginning, he always does this and also pronounces words in the Aussie way (ad VER tisment) as a running gag..
11:50 The 90s 'Tomb Raider' games are absolutely beautiful.
That "vee eye eye" gave me that same feeling with that Nevada party scene in Godfather 2 when that suit guy said "DON VIE-TOE CORLEONE" 😂😂
So happy for another video keep up the great work mint 👍
You missed the Dino Demo before any games officially launched. It was a showcase in graphical power for the time, but against the black abyss. It truly was scary.
The starting up sound and the bells of death. Also i heard war thunder was using cyptro?
Aris sighting
atpRtsd
It also had this childhood Wonder type of look with games like crash bandicoot, the old Spyro games, and other similar platformers, P.K.s place
Great video! Waiting on the video for the PS3/X360 era 😃
Great points on all fronts!

SNES and Genesis got creepy games everywhere 😂
Right? Clock Tower was actually originally an SNES game. I didn't even know they had one on PS1.
Finally a video about my thoughts
1:10 Sony had some involvement in the gaming space.::designing the snes sound chip, developing some decent games…but we didn’t just know them from the Walkman, they were a ubiquitous name in electronics. Stereos, TV’s, Clock radios…so many damn things. Sony was everywhere
Still have the baby cries from shadow man stuck in my head
The onion face on Parapper ths rapper still creeps me out. Lol.
I saw the compound fracture screeshot !!
I hope this game is still alive in development
Silent hill 1 up to this day, I haven't beat it yet. Tried to play it back then but it's too scary
please make a video about the skatepark aesthetic
I got my playstation when I was 6 and my dad took it to this guy he worked with who made it so it could read games on burnt discs and I had pretty much every game for the system. 10:35 A casual wildlife in Australia.
Average dog in Brazil
You should do a section on how liminal the early Persona games were on the PS1 as well, very gritty too compared to later in the series
Oddworld Abe’s oddysee was creepy and pure art haha love that game
Box art too
Usa version are creepy
Suikoden & eternal eyes.
Resident evil 2 was one of my favorites growing up
ahhh, the PS1. good memories and good times.
And creepy ones as well
@SORDINK exactly.
10:43 this gives me the creeps and now burned into my memory
The PS1 is the Cannibal Corpse of video game consoles.
🤘
Yep.

I remember the original PS1 slogan was
U R not Ready
The legend returns my fellas
How is it going king of the frutigooners
I've been frutigrinding fr 🔥🙏
@ExtraMintyy I had a glossy tear coming down my brain sir 🥹✌️🔥
Low res graphics are scarier than high res graphics since the only horror games now are filled with colorful toys in 2018
Obscure the aftermath used to scare me lol I’m 26 now

Tekken 2 was creepier
I would implore you to look into Source Engine 2 Aesthetics. Something about office spaces in that engine makes me feel warm and cozy.
at last someone talk about the elephant in the room until today I legitly scared to play RE3 PS1 myself home alone because if the ambience and the horror of it and the way the zombie look even RE2 PS1 for that matter
A video about weird ps1 games and not mentioning Galerians is a crime
The late 90s' were aesthetically darker and edgier than any decade before or since so it's no surprise that bled into the PS1 era graphical style. Also, any particular reason why the next video is skipping from the original XBox and straight to the 360?
Absolutely- and I yeah I’m just super hyped to make the 360 video is all. Will get to the og soon enough 💯🙏
I love MVG’s video about the technical reasons why PS1 graphics look like that. The lack of floating point precision for vertex positions causing the wobbly polygons is particularly interesting.
I'm glad it was.
Small Soldiers, Destruction Derby 2, Nightmare Creatures 1 & 2, Medal of Honour Underground, etc etc...
3:15 i need background footage
Aris sighting.
Even the console start-up sound was somewhat ominous but I got hyped hearing it every time, like a huge adventure was waiting on the other side. To me, the PS1 is the very definition of nostalgia.
Even Final Fantasy VIII was pretty terrifying at times.
So does the black background. Makes it feel anything can lash out at you even if it almost never does, or luminosity.
I was doing Tofu Attempt runs in RE2 and couldn't handle the Atmosphere of Silent Hill. The Fog and the White Noise Radio... Yea. I was good... Baby Zombies... lol
12:44 what game is this? Martian Gothic, I assume?
Spot on

I remember being annoyed about the Mantaray tech demon because you couldn't open it's big mouth like the rex
Dino Crisis is soooo good
This whole era of advertising was unmatched. I didn't mind they were trying to market something it was so cool. Total opposite of now
ps2 imo is the scariest one with its dystopian mk uktra type of aesthetic. even the ads and overall music was eerie
Isn't this serious sam music?
Dino Crisis 💀 anyone?
Shoutout to Parasite Eve 2, my favorite game on the PS1!
I think its the consoles limitations, devs hard to find work atounds for everything they wanted to do and as hardware got stringer things got easier which imo worsened a lot of the experiences we get now especially when a game is constantly remastered
Limitation breeds inovation, its why i also think most older movies still stamd the test of time because of the Hayes Code
FRIENDS WOULD COME ROUND JUST TO SEE RESIDENT EVIL AS I WAS FIRST TO GET PS1.
Best era of gaming, best time of my life. Nothing compares to the summers during those years.
O.D.T messed me up 😢
