I believe there are examples of tongues in the Old Testament. When Adam was called to name the animals God stood back to watch him and whatever he called them was their name. Where did he get the names (first uttered) but from the Holy Spirit by faith. When Eli saw Hannah moving her mouth, but heard no sound, he thought she was drunk (just like in Acts 2:13). Why would he think that when she was just praying? When the king's wise men couldn't read God's writing on the wall or interpret it, the king was astounded. When it was made known to the king there was one who was excellent in spirit, knowledge and understanding to interpret dreams, riddles, etc., he was called by the king to gain the interpretation. Daniel read the writing and made the interpretation known to the king. Why could none of the king's wisest men serve the king in this matter? The writing was from God's Spirit - not a language of man to be translated or interpreted except by an obedient servant of God Himself. Daniel was that man. When I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the gift of tongues, my Sunday School teacher said my experience was of the devill and had to be renounced. Even as a baby Christian, though in my 30s, I knew enough to ask God about this. I prayed and asked Him to show me His answer in His Word and I would obey His Word to me. I knew the account in Corinthians, but he quickened the above-mentioned accounts in the Old Testament and I was amazed. As humbly as I could .with confidence, I shared this with her in our Sunday School class. I do not remember her exact response, but it wasn't one of agreement. Not too long after that, something our pastor said made her angry and she and her husband left our church. That was back in the 1970's and today, at age 81, I know tongues have been a true blessing in my prayer life and in my life period. I thank Father God for Jesus the Living Word, the Holy Spirit and . for His written Word. His is the glory. Again, this is how I see God's Word in this area. I do not speak for anyone else.
