I just watched, learned and ordered a new replacement chuck for my old as heck 18V Ryobi P211 1/2" hammer drill. Blue and Yellow Color Scheme mind you! LOL But I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video for us out here in WTF is wrong with my tool Land.
Hi thanx for the vid. I had the same problem and only watched your video. I did not unscrew the chuck at all. I poured Q20 in the opening and let the chuck stand upright for five days. Low and behold the chuck unlocked.
I have an almost identical model to the first you demonstrated on. It had a stuck chuck so I followed your steps and it worked perfectly to unbind it. I'd looked at a few other videos and they were useless - basically hold really tight or use an adjustable wrench - not good for hands or the drill. Regardless, it's working again so back to work. Thank you.
Thanks video was getting ready to chuck it ...dumpster dived found full set saw.. vacuum...flashlight n drill..so I'll make investment in a new chuck...thanks again video
I have had 3 of these drills & I really work them hard, so much so that my second one went up in flames, I have even melted the links between the battery cells. Anyway I saved the chuck from that one & presently trying to remove the chuck from my 3rd one, no luck so far even with a hand impact driver. Lol, Just sayin
I bought mine on ebay.. The screw that holds the chuck on is MIA but the chuck won't budge. I'm guessing the previous owners tried to change and decided it would be easier to sell it. I'd appreciate any advice anyone has. I'm frustrated and about to do some stuff to this drill I'm sure I'm going to regret :)
I have the ryobi p252 drill and it doesn’t have the screw in the center of the chuck and I can’t figure out how to remove it. Any advice about how to get that chuck off.
My P202 had a gearbox fail, locked up internally. The retain screw on the chuck has so far resisted my attempts to get it out (And yes, I know it is a left hand thread), and my screwdriver keeps slipping out of the bolt head (drill was original store bought). A buddy of mine has a jammed chuck, and I hoped to give it to him. I'll keep at it, maybe with a larger screwdriver.
i gave my neighbour ROYBI drill ..the chuck comes out. The allen key you used...well its broke inside.. the screw is inside and head broken off. How do fix?
I have an old blue and orange Ryobi 1/2" ONE+ drill and a new 3/8". Both original chucks are junk. Screw driving bits with hex shanks slide into them and drill bits will spin unless I carefully use a couple of pairs of channel-lock plies to really crank them down. I have brad new Jacobs 3/8" and 1/2" keyless chucks. I have a Skil corded 1/2" drill I put one of these on because its original keyed chuck was a garbage one that never would grip, not even using the key in all three holes and a box end wrench for extra force. The Jacobs keyless just takes normal hand power until it clicks twice. NEVER EVER SLIPS!!! I want to put these chucks on my Ryobi drills but after removing the left hand threaded screws, and using the longest hex wrenches I have, hitting them so hard I fear of breaking the gearboxes, they will not unscrew. The chuck on my Skil drill and some others I've changed chucks on were no problem. A couple of hard whacks and they popped loose.
I don't know if anyone else has this issue. The outer grip of Ryobi chuck's are too smooth for me, when I tighten by hand there is hardly any grip, sometimes I get almost a burn on my hands as it slips when tightening. Many times I have larger bits falling out of the chuck because I cant tighten down too well.
The Ryobi Chuck's fricking suck, was chasing this up and apparently a widespread issue to go off axis, become even smoother and Lose it's bite. Lucky most of their other tools are good for the times I use em, I eventually will make a second toolbox for work and use another brand.
thanks mr.. Ya need a 4wd, torch, loctite god, & a machine shop to get this one out.. yep did L. hand thread thing, Just bought a new dewalt yesterday, on sale! 99$ with 2 batteries and charger.
My Ryobi P252 doesn't have a screw inside the chuck,it has the 1/4" bit holder,I don't really like the chuck and would like to replace it,I'm just wondering if it just unscrews????
@@FixItYourself It has the quick release 1/4" tool holder inside the chuck where the left hand screw normally is.You can take a 1/4" quick release bit and snap it in without closing the chuck jaws on the bit.
I felt you had been uploading video's frequently prior to the Corona outbreak, and then there was a gap. So it's good to know you're ok. I enjoy watching your videos.
Where are parts generally available? For example, does Home Depot or Lowe's stock the parts to repair the tools they sell? Or am I "stuck" buying online from Amazon or some similar place? Thanks.
Genius. I should have been more careful when using my drill to hold things against my sanding disk. That plastic end that holds the self-locking mechanism wore away over the years and then completely let go. Chuck is fine but no way I can make a new plastic piece.
Addendum: Just found an old drill someone gave me years ago because the batteries were losing charge ability. Was able to swap that 1/2' chuck for the worn out one on my Ryobi..!!! Took 20 minutes - Thank you, brother. Saved a few $$ for once...
My P252 doesn't have a screw and the chuck will NOT come off. I've hit the allen key with a hammer once really hard, but I'm afraid of breaking it. Any other tips?
Hello! I have a Ryobi R18DD2, and by mistake I read the DD3 description and tought I could use 13mm....but in fact the max is 10mm. Is there any adaptator somewhere I could buy? Or can I change the Drill Chuck and put a bigger one without messing everything up ? Thank you !
Hi I have a similar Ryobi yellow drill. There is too much float at the end of the chuck (i.e. I cant drill smnall holes accurately). Any idea if I can tighten the shaft bearings to reduce the float? Cheers!
@@FixItYourself I have the Ryobi LLCDI1820 and you have described my exact problem. I've got the screw out but I cannot loosen the chuck with an allen key by turning it anti clockwise. Are all the Ryobi chucks removed by securing an allen key in the chuck like this?
Ryobi keyless chucks are pretty pitiful. I just bought a new cordless drill and no matter how tight I twist the chuck, round bits slip and hex shank tools like screwdriver bits slide in. Jacobs makes upsize chucks in this type with threads common to drills a size smaller so a 1/4" can have a 3/8" chuck installed or a 3/8" can have a 1/2" chuck installed. I had to use one of those on the Skil because even though it has the power of a 1/2" and out of the box had a 1/2" chuck, the spindle threads were the size common to most 3/8" drills.
I removed the left hand thread screws from the chucks on my Ryobi drills, chucked the short end of a decent sized hex wrench in and whacked away with a hammer. Nothing. Just spun the drill over and over without popping the chucks loose from their threads.
The screw on my drill came out and I spent 30 minutes turning it clockwise until I watched your video. Thanks.
excellent video, awesome photography, lighting, and thorough explanation.

You're welcome!
Enjoyed the video. That explains why I could not remove the chuck. Well done!
Thanks 👍

Got a new Ryobi hammer drill..Stop drillingand the chuck keeps spinning and the bit flls out..Now using a 4" cutting off grinder to replace the chuck
Clutch!!!!!!! This saved me money. Love this. Thanks for the vid

I masterclass in spreading a video as much as possible
Thank you, and amazed the replacement is only $9.
im doing this since im putting a keyed chuck on it (easier to tighten the chuck) and have found one that will fit
It should be torqued down and have thread lock applied, so it will take a fair amount of pressure to break it loose. That's normal.

Hi just bought a refurbished ryobi drill from eBay it arrived with only 2 jaws in the chuck do I need a new chuck or can it be fixed. Cheers Tom
You need a new chuck.
Thank you great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I used the Remington 870 to get the chuck unstuck. Goin to switch to Dewalt.
Hi! Great video. What is the name of the small bearing size piece that sat inside that 1/2’ chuck? (The piece required to lock screws inside)
Can you do the p237 impact? My entire chuck assembly came off.
Thank you! Good stuff!!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Try the largest flathead that will fit inside the chuck, that should work. Phillips slips to easy.

Same issue here
I had to soak mine in brake fluid, put a 10 mm hex socket in the chuck, hit it with my 1/2" impact to finally get the chuck off!

I don't think it unscrews. If it's a bit holder it usually has a spring clip holding it on.
Maybe you can use something like this.

You'll have to get parts online. Home Depot and Lowes only stock limited amount of parts if any.

So what do I do if it wouldn't unlock
If it won't unlock you'll have to use brute force and cut it off and replace the gearbox and chuck.
I have the brushless model basically the same thing but that screw inside broke off and fell out. So now what? Am I screwed? Pardon the pun.
Not screwed lol. The chuck should come off now. You can get the screw out once the chuck is off.
Turn it to the right to loosen the broken screw.
I have a ryobi drill P201 and has a big clunk when one let’s go of trigger. Any guesses
I have the Ryobi P252 and I see no screw. 🤔
What do I do if I cant lock the allen wrench down?

could not budge the screw on mine ....
So what happens when chcck just dont slip right off, lol, sort of happens on old ones!!!😂😂😂😂
new chuck sounds preety dry actually...
thank you

I don't think so Tom
Hi I have a similar Ryobi yellow drill. There is too much float at the end of the chuck (i.e. I cant drill smnall holes accurately). Any idea if I can tighten the shaft bearings to reduce the float? Cheers!
I would remove the chuck to see if the bearing is loose or worn, there is no way to tighten it.
Maybe the chuck is to blame.

I have the Ryobi 18 volt brushless 1/2 inch hammer drill what is the lock unlock at the base of the chuck for??
cant open or close chuck
sorry but a p252 does not have that screw
Well then I would think you would proceed as if you had already removed the screw.
the wurst chuck there ever , keeps loosening can never get it tight enough totally bad idea
The p252 drill does not have the screw holding it on so this method isn't correct for it
the p252 has a C-clip that holds on the chuck... which i still haven't been able to find.
@@markmiller37482 If you figure out how.. Please post it.
@@markmiller37482 i have not. I've even removed the base plastic around the chuck... kind of looks like a French poodle.
