The Chinese and Chinese culture may be indeed inscrutable to us Westerners, but this music (and so much of the modern Chinese music I have heard) is certainly not inscrutable to me.

but this song is actually adapted from a tang dynasty song called 品弄 (pinnong). I guess the reason why you say so is that this performance is in orchestral form and it doesn’t sound pentatonic. Indeed, many tang dynasty music was not pentatonic with lots of half tones incorporated, and this is also a 大曲 which roughly mean large-scale orchestra, so it should sound orchestral, (although actually there wasn’t much polyphony in ancient Chinese orchestra).
