    Luxman was the vintage top best brend and is still now one of the best, on almost same level sound with those ultra expensive brends as McIntosh or AER

    i just bought a Luxman 1050 based on your reviews. you are right, it beats my pioneer sx 750 and rivals my marantz 300dc, totally shamed my Sansui 3000a (nothing beats that). too bad the bulbs are burned on yours, it is as beautiful lit up as anything. thanks !

    I own a Luxman R 2050 its a stunning powerfull clear clean crisp unit with no bad sounds, i must admit i do prefer the looks of the R1050 with the Rosewood case, mine has the change in style grey steel case nice but the Rosewood is better, I waas a hifi retailer back in 1975 and we used to sell Luxman equipment , they were regarded as the very topend japanese hifi better than Yamaha and Technics, if you can find a Luxman at the right price buy it you will not regret it

    I watched your post about Luxman R-1050 I purchased mine at a audio store that was going out of business. They had been in the community for 100yrs in Toronto Ontario Canada. When they were liquidating all there audio they pulled out some audio from the 70's they used for testing audio they were fixing. The R-1050 was on display timing is everything purchased it right away. The owner of the Audio Store indicated he has the same unit at home sounds amazing. Whenever I use the unit I'm so pleased I purchased the receiver. Your right about using 4 speakers with this Receiver I tried to do this and I blew a fuse. This was what my Tech. guy said. This has been the only problem with the unit otherwise it works well

      4 speakers should not be a problem when using 8 ohm speakers probably both ore 1 set speakers you used are 4 ohm

    It's just the perfect balanced sound, don't know for how much you can find them in the USA but here they are between 100 and 200 euro, depending of the state of the unit, they produce a better sound than every marantz I tested

    thank you very much for the wonderful review. And this Luxman compared with the beautiful Harman Kardon 730? i´m undecided..thanks in advance.

      @vintagestereo  Год назад +1

      the Harman Kardon is very good. it gives a deeper bass. if you need more bass i would.go for the HK but for me.i prefer the luxman. more open sound

    My 5m21 takes 13 seconds as well to power on, i think it's because it has 2 ring core transformers, there is a big voltage peak when they are powered on thats why it takes that long i think

    This was from Luxman's glory days and this model was one of their best (tube amps excepted). Not long after this Luxman was bought by Alpine (the car stereo company) but badged as Luxman and the quality sailed down hill over the next 15 years.
    The only issue with this vintage of Luxman are it's shitty speaker terminals which break off if turned too tight. Also the inside wiring is sloppy like a spider's nest, not what one expects from gear of this calibre. None of this affects the sound though which is punchy, warm and almost tube like.

    • @picturedlife1
      @picturedlife1 6 лет назад

      WRONG ! Luxman was not bought by Alpine. Their respective banks MERGED them. Luxman still put out amazing electronics designed by their top notch engineers. The black Luxman R-117 will stand head to head with ANY amplifier/receiver of your choice.

    As I pay attention to your opinion, I sink a Luxman R-1033. Fortunately, it didn't cost much. 56 EUR! True not Rosewood color is just black (I still like it) .... But it works perfectly and has a very nice voice, besides being very detailed. My question: is it not worse or poorer than the receivers with higher sound power? ... I bought more Luxmans, but they are later and their sound is not so good ..... But not bad! However, I managed to buy a Luxman C-120A for 78 EUR (it didn't seem to be too overpriced, I was fortunate!) Nice condition but no wood cover ..... But its wonderful voice ..... More I wish you exciting adventures, in the name of the viewers and the addicts ... Gustav

    I got tired of dragging 200 LP's & my stereo (that I bought at Burrard Stereo in Vancouver) from apartment to apartment to house (from BC to Ontario & the stereo & clothes & cat was about all I could fit in my car & had to leave a set of speakers) & sold the LP's which I kept in plastic sleeves & was meticulous about keeping clean 25 years ago when I replaced most of them with CD's then eventually the Technics turntable & cassette deck (don't remember what it was) and then sold this receiver when I bought a 5.1 home theatre setup which I thought was good enough for what I needed but I'm so sad I sold the amp now. Especially since I sold it for probably $200 or whatever I could get for it at the time. I didn't know anything about stereo equipment at the time but a friend worked at the stereo shop & recommended it all & turns out was some of the best. All I have left is 1 pair of Advent Loudspeakers which I've recently replaced the woofer foam rings but really haven't used since but perhaps if I replace my vintage amp I'll get them back in service some day. Who knew. I thought amps & turntables were history. 😢

    Comparing that old amplifiers is little difficult. Many factors come into plays. This may be just nice, not tired example..

  • @RandomUser6947

    The R-1050 does have a voltage switch. But it is located on the inside. You can set it for 110-120-220-240Volts. But it can be a little tricky, to see what voltage it is set on, so be careful. It's not a normal rotary switch, it's a contact "block" you move from one position to another. The switch is located right next to the transformer.
    The receiver in this video may have burned out bulbs, because the ligth is quite clear in the unit I have. The standard lights give a yellowish light in the entire front panel window. Never tried LED's on this type of receiver, not sure if it would look any good.

    I bought one of Ebay last year they sound great. One of the better sounding buys for the price.
    I would put them right up there with any Japanese receiver. It has almost all the filters plus it looks good in gun metal gray face.

    I've had my R-1050 for years running a pair of 4 ohm Paradigms 9 se along with a pair of 8 ohm Paradigm 7 v1. The sound quality for music and movies is tops although I've had to stuff the bass ports on the 7s. I'm now considering dropping the 7s and going with 4 of the 4 ohm 9s - having given up on finding a pair of 7 se Mkll. The reviewer has cautioned using 4x4 ohm speakers, anyone care to add to this cautionary note? Looking forward to finding out how to change my running lights, thanks.

      +Uncle Doug i am afrais to run 4x4ohm on every device but some could do the job. I am not sure how to calculate how much a device can handle but there is a mathemetic solution for this

    I've never seen one of these Luxman receivers,in America. Were they available outside of the European countries?

    • @vintagestereo
      @vintagestereo  8 лет назад +2

      I am not sure. What I know is that there where 3 top brands in japan, accuphase, sansui and luxman, the rest such as pioneer, akai, sony and all others where a step down. i think you can compare it with samsung and apple on the top and the rest just under it. About this model i know there was also a r-1070 nand a r-1120. I love the real authentic vintage looks from them. The one everybody wants is the r-1500, just scored one of those a few weeks ago. Not sure if they where ever sold in america.

    The highs sound to high if that makes sense, like the treble is just to much, it lacks that worm vintage sound. It could just be how my ears hear or how it's coming through on my iPad air2. I'm also not a big fan of how it looks, don't like those light pwr indicators, Marantz looks much nicer. If I come across a luxman in a thrift shop though I will definitely buy it now.

    The whole design of this thing is wrong. The input selector won't tell you anything unless the lights are on, the micro black buttons on top including loudness are ridiculous, the cenral big knob for radio tuning gives impression of being a volume knob, all boring brown with blinking red leds that will distract you, just horror.. :) This is how a radio tuner should be designed.
