In a year, working at Lindy and practicing 5 days a week, you can become a good Lindy dancer. Along with this effort you get a bit jaded, so you branch out with Charleston, Balboa, and Collegiate Shag. To compete well in Lindy you work to become proficient at Charleston. After 5 years you are the old guard, competing at a high level, teaching for the love of the dance and the nurturing social scene. Some get twisted up in their egos. You love dance, you have a fulfilling social life through dance, and your vacations involve dance. But then,… there’s all those other dances outside the Lindy world. Some dare to re-enter kindergarten, taking on the ego crushing work, and they strive to learn Waltz and Foxtrot and Samba and Cha Cha, but oh how difficult ! You experience humility, and you must embrace it, or remain static and happy in your Lindy world, or maybe you wither. Will you become your own sacrifice on the altar of dance? In lead-follow dancing you must make a commitment outside yourself, as it is easier to find a spouse than a good dance partner. Unless your career IS dance, don’t lose track of the source of your livelihood for the sake of dance.
