2019 RAM 2500 VS 2018 RAM 2500 - V8 MPG Test! Does The 8 Speed Best The 6 Speed?!?!?!?!

  • I had an opportunity to drive the 8 speed/6speed back to back and I could instantly tell which one was better! Ultimately I would choose the 8 Speed (8HP75) because the transmission wasn't as busy as I though it would be. The 6 speed however was busy and I would always shift it manually to keep it from shifting so much. What do you think? Leave your comments below!

    Here's some constructive criticism just based on this video; you really should research the vehicle that you're reviewing better. Not knowing it had MDS, then locking it into a gear disabling MDS is a humongous oversight. A 10-mile loop impeded by traffic is no good if you're trying to get accurate MPG numbers, especially trying to test & compare two different vehicles. Your test control is inaccurate due to such a short distance traveled, with wildly uncontrollable variables (traffic). You need to take your vehicles to where you can do a 50-mile (minimum) un-interrupted loop at 65 mph. Fill-up at the start, then fill-up at the end- this is much more accurate than the trip computer. If you do these things- then your data will be useful.

    Hi,just wanted to say thanks for posting all the videos. Side note...If you select the gears manually it defeats the eco mode (all 8 cylinders all the time) so mileage will suffer. Also a 10 mile loop in city traffic with all the variables isn't fair to either truck...highway for 25 miles or more,both left in drive,would show a far more accurate mpg. I agree on the 6 speed hunting for gears (400,000+ on my 2500 hemi/6 speed/3.73),got an 18 1500 8speed/3.92 and it shifts quicker but less often ...it seems to always have the right gear for speed/conditions.

      Dan Hatt thanks for the info. I forget these trucks have MDS!!! I know most owners will disable it because they don’t like the way the truck reengages when they accelerate.
      Hopefully as my Channel grows I will be able to do longer MPG test but because these trucks are “for sale” I try to respect the amount of mileage/fuel I use to shoot these videos(I even watch the engine ours too). Thanks for watching the video and looking forward to showing you better content in the future!

    Love your review. I had a previous gen 6.4 , sixer with a 4.10. I drove the new 8 speed and just went with the RAM 2500 6.7. Then in a week, the 3500 HO. Thanks for your videos man !

      Thanks! We loved the new Hemi w 8, but the Cummins was quieter, torquey, better control in the hills and better MPG. We found that out after we towed a car hauler 400 miles. Then of course, we started looking at 5th wheel Toy Haulers and didn’t wanna tow illegally over the payload. Even though that 2500 has plenty of power, the 3500 HO is an absolute unit.
      Is it hard to get used to towing a big Fiver? We tow a 24 car hauler tag along. We were thinking around 30 for 5er toy hauler.

      arawana yea the HEMI will feel under powered with that much weight especially in the hills. Initially you feel the weight but if you stay under 14k I find that you don’t feel it as much compared to like 16000+. Thanks for sharing!

    Hey JB, first off thanks so much man. And second I do feel like the traffic played into the 19s mph. But I'm happy with the results. I test drove a 19 2500 the other day that had the 3.73 and I loved it. And it got almost 3mpg better than my 16 3500 with the 4.10. And that's after they put 35in tires and a 3in lift on the 19 X,D. And with the new higher tow rating I can afford to drop to the 3.73 now

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  5 лет назад

      Mike Hunt no problem! Did you buy a 19? That’s good insight even to have a lift/35’s. Did you notice the noise level too?

    • @toofastnobrakes
      @toofastnobrakes 5 лет назад

      @@JB_WhoWork no i didnt buy yet, probably will be the end of the year, or ill order one. The noise level was great, but its hard to do a straight across comparison, my truck has a custom muffler that is beefy and loud. Which i dont mind. But with the mpg diff i also need to consider my truvk is heavier and longer. But i will be trading in later this year for sure

    The Cummins does really well on mpg especially deleted. With that being said, I traded in my Cummins with only 63k mile for Hemi 3500 4 x 4. The diesel cost me thousands in replaced Turbo, DPF, Fuel Injectors, EGR. This doesn't include extra cost of diesel fuel or additional repairs due to picking up bad fuel (common problem). I agree that dieses pull very well but are cost prohibitive.

    My choices a striped tradesman 2019 or a loaded 2018??? I will go for either depending upon heavy discounts on the 2018. I like a nice stereo and heated heats in Montana I am 56 years old and have arthritis. Both are good trucks i like comfort features on the highway. 2019 with an 8 speed is supposed to have better fuel economy and I never bought a truck for that.

    Roll tide. I have a 6.4 HEMI 2018 and that Eco Mode barely helps at all unless I'm in highway. Also for MPG in a 3/4-ton and maybe even it's 1-ton counterpart is an oxymoron, you didn't buy these trucks for fuel economy.

    • @robertbaratheon9289
      @robertbaratheon9289 5 лет назад +4

      People who drive more than 15 miles a day will care about fuel economy, especially if this is their daily driver. As shitty as truck prices are you can't afford two truck so one has to do everything.

      @@robertbaratheon9289 from experience and having daily driven 6.4 HEMI 2500s for the past 3 years I can tell you and likely others who are new and looking into owning one that fuel economy is going to be the least of your concerns in a 3/4-ton gasser, it was never designed to be efficient.

      The new 19's with the 8 speed stay in eco mode quite often now. My 18 Power Wagon hardly ever say the eco light come on, my 19 spends most of it's time while unloaded in it. I'm experiencing around 1.5 MPG better with the 8 speed over the 6 speed and it's a ton better with a trailer behind it.

      @@chriscook2036 Yes I tow quite often with it, probobly around 25-35% of it's time so far has been hooked up to either a dump trailer or log trailer. Just the other day I had nearly 18,000lbs behind it (I know I shouldn't have), it pulled it just fine. It was all backroads with lots of elevation changes. I've also had around 20,000lbs behind it offroad with a log trailer, had to use the winch a few times as it was a rained out logging road. I do have Firestone bags on it though to get rid of sag.

      Things to note:
      1) Judging by my experience the On Board Mileage Computers are always overtly optimistic. It would not be very smart for the to be pessimistic seeing how most people take them as gospel. Completely unaware of the amount of money they are spending and the exact miles they are traveling.
      2) Any fuel added after the first kick off get wasted into the evaporation system. If you really want to run the pump more pull the nozzle out the tank and dump additional gas on the ground. It will actually be better for the truck!

    • @FastEddie368
      @FastEddie368 5 лет назад

      Using this method is extremely accurate. If you top your tank off beyond the first fill up. And compare a short tank (refilled before you get the tank down very low) you will see that you get less miles out of the top half of the tank than you do out of the last half. This is a result of excess fuel forced into the government mandated fuel vapor recovery system.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  5 лет назад

      Edward Hands problem is these are new trucks that I’m privileged to drive and I honor their $60-$80k trucks by not putting too much mileage on them. I have mentioned in the past to round down 2-3 MPG if you don’t trust the computer. I have recorded from my personal truck that the mileage came in lower on the computer then what it showed at the pump.
      I do this mpg loop as a way to give people a best case scenario of mix driving and hopefully as my channel grows I can use your philosophy to gain better results when the factory provides test trucks to me. Thanks for watching!
